NO TROUBLE FEARED
Case of Isolated Smallpox Causes No
Alarm In the City.
EXTRA PRECAUTIONS TAKEN
Girl Has B'en Kemovd t> the Peat
HOUS', Where She Is Under
Treatment
Atlanta, Dec. 23. —-The negro girl, at
99 Trinity avenue, who developed a case
of smallpox yesterday, is now confinedin
the city hospital, some miles from the
city, where all contagious diseases of this
character are treated. As soon as the
case was reported, the patient was taken
in charge by the board of health and the
house was put under the most watchful
care and no one allowed to go iu or out
until a thorough investigation was made.
The names of all the occupants and of
those who bad visiteel the premises re
cently were taken, and the sanitary in
spectors instructei to keep an eye on all
suspects.
This girl was employed as a servant in
the house, and it is supposed by the health
officers that she contracted the disease
while unpacking the baggage of some
Cuban guestes. These Cubans came to
the house several weeks ago ‘and had
with them about twenty or thirty-five
trunks, which they employed this girl to
unpack.
After the girl had been removed to the
hospital the baggage was carefully exam
ined, but all the trunks bore the stamp of
the board of health of Tampa, Fla.,which
certified that the goods had been
thoroughly fumigated.
Tne board of health held a meeting
yesterday and sifted the case from begin
ning to end. They decided not to quar
antine the house at No 99 Trinity i.ve
nue as the infected portion is in an iso
lated part of premises, but ordered all
the occupants to be vaccinated at once
and for the names of all persons who had
been on the premises to be taken and
their movements watched.
•’We have our eyes on all the Cubans
in the city, in fact,” said Chief Inspec
tor Veal,‘‘and everyone will be fol
lowed closely by my men, for the board
is inclined to be suspicious of them all.
If the clothing of those Cubans who
lived at 89 Trinity avenue contained
smallpox germs there is a possibility
that others are infected in the same
way. We do not apprehend any trou
ble from the case on hand, and if it
should appear in other portions of the
city we can handle it so as to prevent
its spreading. There is not a particle of
danger, for we have had the disease
here before and managed it very suc
cessfully, and we are better prepared
for it today than ever.'
This is merely a precautionary meas
ure in Older to prevent the disease from
spreading. Those people who might
have been exposed to smallpox are being
carefully watched, and so far there is
not the slightest trace of it anywhere
in the city, except in this one case. The
patient was promptly removed to the
hospital the moment smallpox was sus
pected and every measure to isolate has
been employed.
•‘We have posted a notice on the
house at No. 99 Trinity avenue that
the house is suspected of infection, but
we will hardly quarantine it, nor do I
think we will quarantine the Cuban
family, who have since moved up on
Whitehall, but we have had them all
revaccmated and their clothing again
fumigated.
Every precaution, as I say, has been
taken, and the doctors all agree that
there is no likelihoood of the appear
ance of smallpox elsewhere in the city.’*

Alabama Priaoners to Go to Columbus.
Montgomery, Ala., Dec. 23.—News
has been received here that the United
States penitentiary at Columbus, 0.,
had been designated as the place for the
future incarceration of prisoners sent up
from this state. The news is rather
cheerfully received here by those inter
ested. as the Ohio penitentiary is much
nearer Alabama and the climate much
less severe than at Albany, N. Y.,
where the federal convicts have been
sent heretofore.

BULLET IN HIS ANKLE BONE.
X Kays Find u Minnie Ball lit ait Ex-Con
ft derate Soldier** Leg*.
Columbia, S. C., Dec. 23.—Professor
Sloan of the South Carolina college has
just employed the Roentgen rays to sat
isfy aii ex-confederate soldier that a
wound received at the battle of Peters
burg is incurable.
About 30 years ago W. H. Outz, who
for ten years has been sheriff of Edge
field county, received a federal bullet
in his left leg. The bone was fractured
just above the ankle, and the bullet was
split. Outz went on crutches, and has
been using them ever since.
Numerouk surgeons have attempted,
but a big chunk of the mime ball re
mained somewhere near the bone and
could not be located. To satisfy him
self as to his chances of recovery, the
sheriff came here, and in the presence
of a half dozen physicians, the x rays
were turned on.
From a scientific standpoint, the ex
amination was eminently successful, al
though extinguishing Sheriff Outz'slast
ray of hope of ever being on his feet
again. The fragment of the bullet was
located in the bones of the ankle, but its
removal was not attempted, because the
doctors agreed that the bone had been
fractured in such a pec liar manner as
to make its knitting together an impos
sibility.

WORK OF TR'MNWRECKERS
The Southern V-.tlbiu- I, mltel ■ ••railed
OH a High i'|-M«l,|ee.
Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 23.—An at
tempt was made to wreck the Southern
railway vestibule limited train at Me
Combs’ trestle, 11 miles of Weems’
station. The angle bars were removed
from two rails and the rails removed
from their places, throwing the train
off the tracks on the trestle.
The dastardly work is supposed to
have been done by train robbers, and a
sheriff's posse and bloodhounds are on
the trail of the outlaws. The of
the plot to wreck the train and rob it is
near Red mountain, and in oue of the
wildest sections of country along tli<
Southern road between Atlanta and
Birmingham.
Fortunately for the trainmen and pas
sengers, the limited was not moving at
its usual high rate of .-peed at the time,
and the engine and cars were brought
to a standstill just as they were about to
tumble off the trestle to the creek 100
feet below.
The engine and every car left the
track on the high trestle and bumped
along the crossties until they had nearly
reached the edge of the trestle before
stopping.
No one was hurt, and the damage to
the railroad property is slight, but the
officials of the road are greatly incensed
at the attempt to kill and rob, and they
will use every effort to capture the crim
inals bent on doing murder for gain.
