London, Dec. 26. —Tho Christmas
■weather has been of the mildest descrip
tion, foggy and without snow. But the
holiday trade has been the best in years
and especially in jewelry, fancy articles,
books anti mechanical toys, which
.formed the chief attraction of the shop
pers. The receipts of last Monday at
-one big co operative store alone were
£22,400.
An average of 200,000 parcels were
handled daily at the main parcel office,
where 1.400 clerks have been working
night and day.
On the other hand the distress among
the poor of London is equally marked.
Over 700 persons were relieved out of
ihe funds of the p >r box at Bow street
police court in three days, some of the
■rases being most pitiable.
The queen's Christmas was celebrated
very quietly at Osborne, the death of
Prince Henry of Battenberg having
made all usual festivities unseemly.
Only the old traditional customs of the
table were uuinterfered with and the
visual presents were given. The royal
•baron of beef, which was the principal
-dish on the queen’s sideboard, was cut
this year from a Devon ox, which was
fattened on her majesty’s Flemish farm
■on the Windsor great park. The joint
was roasted at Windsor and was sent to
Osborne Christinas eve, along with a
boar’s head and a Woodcock pie. They
jdl duly appeared on the sideboard.
Her majesty received from her grand
seon, Emperor William of Germany, as
usual, a genuine Hure de Sanglier from
the famous royal preserves at Springe,
Hanover, ano another from the Duke of
Coburg, besides a quantity of German
cakes and sweetmeats.
Ambassador Bayard Attacked.
Officials and diplomatic circles are in
'a flutter over an outspoken article on
Mr. Thomas F. Bayard, the United
■States ambassador, in The Chronicle of
last Thursday. Hitherto it was the cus
tom of the English press to lavishly
praise him, and he has been everywhere
praised as the man who, singlehanded,
.-accomplished the Anglo-American en
-tente. The Chronicle, upon the occas
ion referred to, gave great prominence
to a Washington letter, saying that in
stead of rendering either country ser
vice, Mr. Bayard, by minimizing the
gravity of President Cleveland’s Vene
zuelan message to congress, was a most
- dangerous representative of the United
States during the grekt crisis, and, the
'Washington letter adds, it was no
thanks to him that the situation did not
lead to the most serious consequences.
The Chronicle’s correspondent further
elaims to have the highest authority for
making the statement that President
Cleveland and Secretary Olney were
anxious a year ago that Mr. Bayard
should resign; that all the negotiations
were taken out of his hands, and that
he has known nothing of what trans
pired between Washington and the for
eign office here, but has been content to
..be pushed aside without resenting it.
The government is busily engaged in
making inquiries into the systematic
divulgence of confidential information
by persons employed in the department
-of state, and prosecutions will probably
follow. It is stated that foreign govern
ments are being informed regarding the
secrets of the British service more fre
quent than in the case of the secrets of
.any other power.
The czar has sent to King Menclik of
Abyssinia a large collection of musical
instruments, including a grand piano,
an organ, a complete set of wind intru
ments as well as a band of musicians,
who accompany the imperial gift.
Gladstone on Book Collectors.
Mr. Gladstone, in a letter just pub
lished on the subject of book collectors,
- says:
“I have been a purchaser in my time
•of about 35.000 books. A book collector
■ ought to possess six qualifications—an
• appetite, leisure, wealth, knowledge,
• discrimination and perseverance. Os
■ these I have only the two firsi, and the
last is restricted, as my visual power
seriously disables it.
“Speaking generally, I have retired
from the list of purchasers, and lam
: gradually transferring the bulk of my
. library to an institution, St. Daniel’s,
..Hawarden.
■“The book longest in my possession
is ‘Sacred Dramas,’ presented me by
the authoress, Hannah More, inscribed
‘As you have just, come into the world,
and I am just going out of it, allow
me." etc.”

IN SEARCH OF HER FATHER.
Missouri Girl Goes to the State of Oregon
on a Sad Mission.
Portland, Or., Dec. 26.—Miss Mary
Ellen Thaxter of Sedalia, Mo., is here
endeavoring to obtain confirmatory evi
dence of the death of her father, Everett
Thaxter, if he be indeed dead, to expe
dite the distribution of the SoOJ,OOO es
tate of the deceased, in which .she is in
terested to the extent of $250,000. Ten
years ago Thaxter left his home, coming
west, and the last five letters Miss Thax
ter received from him were dated ‘'Os
wego. Or.” That was about five
or six years ago. Then correspondence
between father and daughter ceased.
About that time Thaxter was known to
live in the neighborhood of Oswego,
prospecting and otherwise laboring,
having as a chum one Frank Merrick.
In the fall of 1892, Merrick circulated
the story that his partner had gone back
to his home in Missouri. This was
credited up to three months ago, de
spite the. fact that Thaxter’s new ac
quaintances never again heard of him.
His skeleton was found at the bottom < f

NINE MONTHS IN BED. CURED
24 HOURS.
T. J. Blackmore, of Haller & Blackmor>-
Pittsburg, Pa., says: “A short time since I
procured a bottle of “Mystic Cure.” It got
me out of the house in twenty-four hours.
I took to my bed with Rheumatism nine
months ago and the “Mystic Cure” is tho
only medicine that did any good. I had
five of the best physicians in the city, but
received very little reliei from them. I
know that Mystic Cure to be what it is rep-,
resented and take pleasure n racomending
it to ether sufferers.” aaiES'

The Reason Why.
Why is it that Compound Oxygen cures
so many eases of disease which physicians
have pronounced incurable? Oxygen is
is admitted to be a germicide. Ozone is
«revitalizer. Many diseases have been
shown to result from the presence of
bacteria or germs. Compound Oxygen is
rich in ozone, and is, therefore, a revita
lizer and a powerful one as well as anti
septic, and this accounts for the won ier
ful success which it has achieved within
the past twenty-five years. This success
is an established fact, substantiated by
the willing testimony of grateful patients.
