HILL’S FREEDOM.
Spent a Fei Hours Yesterday In
Athens.
EXPRESSES HIMSELF AS BEING j
Grateful to Hts Friendi—H« Will Kenvwe
To New York and Make Hia
Home There.
Harry Hill was in Athens yesterday
for a few hours.
He came up from Crawford where he
bad spent the night at the home of his
uncle, Col. Dick Taylor.
It was only Monday morning that
Harry Hill received his official pardon
papers at Col. J. M. Smith’s camp at
Smithonia. They were carried over by
Mrs. Bessie Taylor Hill, his stepmother,
and Miss Sallie Taylor, his cousin, the
papers having been sent them by Mrs.
Governor Atkinson.
At Colonel Smith’s home Harry Hill
was given good advice by Colonel Smith
and sent forth with bis best wishes.
The scene at Colonel Taylor’s was one
of pathos. The table upon which the
delicious feast rested was a tempting
sight, but the food remained untouched.
The silverware of Hill’s dead mother
was upon the table and all the surround
ings were those of pathetic remem
brances.
Yesterday be spent the day in
Athens and was given a pleasant
greeting by a number of old friends
here.
He plainly shows that ill health has
been preying upon him. His hair ig
gray and the nervous appearance
shows the presence of dyspepsia.
As to his future life, he simply states
that be intends to make New York
his home at an early date, in fact as
soon as be can wind up some farming
interests in Georgia.
In regard to the occupation he will
follow in New York he has not yet
fully determined, but says the people
will hear from him soon.
So far as his case is concerned, he
hag nothing to say except that the
day will come when he will be vindi
cated in the eyes of the world.
He expresses himself as being very
grateful to all the kind friends who
have stosd by'him in his troubles

IN CHATTANOOGA COURTS.
Salt Filed Agalnat the LOokent Mountain
Kaliread.
Chattanooga, Dec. 30.—A very im
portant suit was filed in the chancery'
court yesterday by the State of Tennes
see vs. J. Simpson Africa, et al, owner
of the Chattanooga and Lookout Moun
tain railway, known as the broad
guage line, up Lookout Mountain.
The bill was filed to collect $2,273,
state and county taxes for the years 1893
and 1894, and asks for a sale of the
property.
The instrument is of some length,
and recites that in 1892 the road was
sold to J. Simpson Atrica, trustee, for
the benefit of the bonded indebtedness.
Following this sale, the road was leased
to P. F. Jones, who has since operated
it by himself. The new purchasers
never incorporated, aud therefore it has
uo legal status as a railroad.
Mr. Jones, as lessee, has not paid the
taxes. Comptroller James A. Harris a
few days since issued a distress warrant
against P. F. Jones, “receiver,” in
which the state sought to lapy ou the
property of Mr. Jones, or iJSt which he
might have in his Jianas as a “re
ceiver.” This was for
warded to the Sheriff, whese deputy
ascertained that do personal property of
the road could be found as belonging to
P. F. Jones, “receiver.”
Back Tax Collector J. B, Whitehead
placed the matter in the hands of
Cooke, Swaney & Cooke, who yester
day, after having ascertained the
names of the owners of the property,
filed.the suit to collect the taxes. lu
the oaption of the bill about forty indi
viduals and corporations are mentioned
as defendants.
A representative of the Times made a
vigorous search for Mr. Jones yesterday
afternoon, but learned he was out of
the city.
It is understood that by agreement
Mr. Jones, as lessee, was to have paid
the taxes, but ou account of some mis
understanding has failed to do so.
