Bions of the tariff bill came up the western
senators who are anxious to promote the
Asiatic market for the wheat crop of their
section joined together to cut down the
duty. They wanted the products of China
and Japan to come in our ports in great
quantities in order that the wheat carrying
ships might be sure of return cargoes.
They carried their point.
Farmers of the Northwest.
“I am for the farmer of the northwest,”
said Senator Hansbrough of North Dakota
to me in explaining this matting item.
“We want a better market for our wheat.
For years we have been depending upon
England and Euhope. There we come in
competition with India, with Russia, with
the Argentine Republic and now with
South Africa. The people of these coun
tries, with their cheap labor, can raise
iyheat at prices which our farmers cannot
tduch and make a living, but if we will
establish reciprocal trade relations with
China and Japan wecan control their mar
kets. Think of the output of wheat China
can consume if her people only learn to
use it generally! There are 400,000,000 of
people in China, or some such number, and
as Colonel Mulberry Sellers used to say,
‘every one of them has a hungry stom
ach.’ If we can get our wheat going in
that market, it will be worth millions
every year to the farmers of the northwest
and the Pacific coast. Already wheat grown
in the Dakotas has been shipped to China.
\ “Mr. Hill, the president of the Pacific
Railroad told me he had made
arrangements which wheat could be |
shipped by rail t'd'Pnget sound and then 1
by water to China at $3 a ton cheaper than j
it would cost to scud the same wheat, to
Liverpool. But this cannot be done with- i
oct return cargoes. This explains our vote I
on the matting duties. lam going in for i
reciprocity arrangements with the Asiatic I
countries. If congress will sijtpport this
idea, we shall have a great development of |
our commerce with Asia.’’

ON ONE FARM.
Seventy-Three Products Raised on a3i Acre
Georgia Farm.
Georgia leads the world’at the Nash
ville exposition in an exhibit illustra- i
tive of the capabilities of her soil for ,
diversified farming. It is in the contri- .
bution of John A. Manget, of Cobb,
county, to the exhibit of the Nashville, :
Chattanooga and St. Louis railroad, in
charge of Col. J. B. Killebrew. Col. |
Killebrew has gathered together for the ,
railroad, as its constribntion to the Ten
nessee Centennial exposition, a wonder
ful display of farm products, minerals,
woods and curios, but he points the visi
tor with greatest pride to Mr. Manget’a
seventy three products from a twenty
five acre farm, eleven of which are grass
or forage crops, disproving the oft heard
assertion of northerners that the south
is deficient in forage crops. Mr. Manget
is a brother of Mrs. D. R. Thomas of
Savannah.
\
John Griffin, of Zanesville, 0., says:
“I never lived a day for thirty years with
out suffering agony, until a box of De
Witt’s Witch Hazel Salve cured my piles.”
For piles and rectal troubles, cuts,
bruises, sprains, eczema and all skin
troubles DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve is
unequalled. ' D. W. Curry.

THE WOMAN COLONEL
! I
Aprostropties Io the Latest and Host
Gallant Product of Georgia.
THE HIbTOSY OF BRAYE NANI HALL
GuV, Bill and Gov. Bob Seem to Have Struck
a Popular Chiord—Long May the
Pietty Creatures Move.
Governor Atkinson, of Georgia, and
Governor Taylor, of Tennessee, Rave
gained immortai fame by conferring the
noble title of colonel upon women. Gov
ernor Atkinson began the good work
with Miss Butt, an l Gov. Taylor prompt
ly followed with Miss Ely.
In the old countries of Europe queens
and Princesses have been accorded
this honorary title, but it has remained
for the chivalric Southern governors to
recognize the military capability of the
fair sex. Governor Atkinson has simply
done what other Georgia governors should
have done long ago, says the Macon
Telegraph. As far back as the war of
the Revolution a Georgia woman de
monstrated that patriotism of the sort
that means the taking up of arms in de
sense of country was not confined to the
male gender.
Nsncy Hart, for whom Hart county,
Georgia, is named was born in Elbert
county, of this state. In order that our
authority may not be questioned we
quote from Appleton’s Cyclopedia of
American Biography: “She was with
out education or refinement, but a zeal
ous patriot. Although illiterate and of
unprepossessing appearance, she sup
ported the cause with many deeds of
bravery and was well known to the
Tories who stood somewhat in fear of
her. ,On the occasion of an excursion
of the British from the camp at Augus
ta into the interior, a party of five of
the enemy came to her cabin to pillage.
While they were eating and drinking at
her table she contrived to conceal their
arms, and when they sprang to their
feet at the sound of the approaching
neighbors, she ordered them to surren
der or pay the forfeit with their lives.
One man stirred and was shot dead.
Terror of capture induced another to
I attempt to escape, but he met with the
' same fate. When the neighbors arrived
. they found the woman posted in the
■ doorway, two men dead on the floor
and the others kept at bay.”
- Nancy Hart lived until 1840, when
■ she died in Elbert county. Her story of
■ heroic devotion was quite sufficient to
justify Governor Atkinson in knight-
I ing, as it were, one of the sex of Nancy
‘ Hart, and he deserves honor for grant
t ing the recognition too long withheld.
As Georgia women could be depended
upon in the past to defend their country,
'so can they be depended upon for the
future, and in assigning certain of them
to colonelcies now, the governor is wise,
indeed, so that should the country be
again aroused by the alarums of war,
there will be women high in military
rank to assist in the mobilization of
armies.
At the recent meeting of the United
Confederate Veterans in Nashville, ex-
Senator Butler, of South Carolina pro
posed ' ,a monument be built to the
women of the confederacy who did so
much to sustain the cause. It should be
erected by all means, for the honor is
long past due, and, though some of us
may be prone to regard the action of
Governor Atkinson, in conferring upon a
woman the rank of a regimental colonel,
as a bit of gubernatorial humor and pleas
antry, we have no doubt his excellency
was moved by a deeper feeling and that
he sought to show that he was profound
ly sensible of the magnificent service
rendered home and country by the wo
men of Georgia when the eagles of war
were abroad in the land.
TENNESSEE’S L4DI COLONEL,
Governor Tny’or Emulates the Example of
<jov. Atkiuaon and Appoints a Lady.
Governor Atkinson’s original idea
of making ladies colouels is proving
quite popular.
Monday Governor Taylor, of Ten
nessee, commissioned Miss Nellie Ely
as colonel on his staff. Miss Ely is

It tickled Gov. *;Bob” so that he de
termined that Georgia should never outdo
Tennessee in the mutter of lady colonels,
so he proceeded to (appoint Miss Ely

CAR WORKS REiCKE.
Elliott Plant at Gadsden Get Orders For ’
Fifty B< x Cars.
Gadsden Ala., June 30:—The Elliott
Car company will soon resume' opera
tions.
The factory has received an order for
fifty box cars from the N. O. & N. E.
railroad and will begin the manufactuie
of the same in a few days. It is under
stood that these cars are to be construe
ted as mere samples, and if they are sat
isfactory the order will be increased to
several hundred cars.
The Elliott Car Works have been shut
down for a period and a good force of
> men hate been thrown out of
, employment. The news of the new
, order, although a small one, will be
gratefully received by a large number
of people. It is hardly possible that the
car works will not continue operations
for the balance of the year. Captain
Elliott, the president is working hard
to keeep his plant going regularly, and
if anybody could succeed he will.
