Firemen Did Gallant Servicr— Books Wera In
Fire Proof Safe and Are
Not Injured,
The screams of frightened women
startled the people on upper Broad
street last night about 11 o’clock.
Policeman Tolbert saw the flames
spurt out of the front end of the
Rome Cotton factory’s store, and he
pulled the alarm box at the corner of
Broad street and Sixth avenue.
No. I and the Hooks were on the
grounds first, and in a very short time
No. 2’s joined them. The entire roof
of the building was blazing when they
arrived. Steady streams began to
play on the flames, but they, were
stubborn and eat into the interior.
The stock of goods valued at $1,500
was destroyed by the fire or rendered
worthless by water. The loss is fully
covered by insurance.
The books of the store and factory
were in the building, but in a fire proof
safe, and are probably uninjured. The
building was badly damaged,

CITY COURT.
Court Room Was Too Warm and the Session
Was Held in the Hall.
The heat is no respecter of person. It
attacks all alike, irrespective of color,
condition or standing, Yesterday the
fiery humidity penetrated the room where
city court is held up. It attacked sav
agely judge, lawyers, jurors, prisoners
and spectators, and had them perspiring
and panting like forty,
“Whew!” said Judge Harris. “This
is awful. I believe I’ll suffocate. I think
it would be cooler in the hall. So I rule
that the court be moved to the corridor
facing east and west.””
At d nobody had any kick coming for
a delightful breeze blew through from '
the western, doors, and it was tempered '
to coolness by proximity to the river.
The change proved agreeable to every
body concerned.
The jury in the case of Deitz vs. Fahy
evidently don’t mind the weather. They
went out Tuesday afternoon and had not
up to a late hour last night reached a
verdict. The suit was brought by Mr.
Deitz against Mr. Fahy concerning the
plans used in the Fahy building.
Yesterday in the case of Ballew vs.
Tew & Ellison the court directed a ver
dict for the defendant.
Lizzie Speer, a colored woman, charg
ed with assault and battery, pleaded
guilty, and was fined $5 and costs or
three months in the chaingang.
The court took up the case of Dickens
vs. the Electric Street Railway company,
but did not finish it.
