BARBER JOE HUTTON
He Gies on a Fprre, Gets the Bounce
and Skips.
LEAVES MANY UNPAID BILLS BEHIND
Hutton H«i Always Horn* * •♦ond Character
and Hi* Many Friend* B I eve He
Will tceturo.
Where is Joe Hutton?
That is the question some Romans are
asking in vain just now. And thereby
hangs a tale.
Joe is a barber, and has wielded razor
and shears.in Ned Huggins shop at the
Armstrong for a number of year®—and it
may be said that a better tonsorial artist
never scraped chins than this same Joe.
As the story goes Hutton developed an
abnormal thirst for strong drink, and too
frequent indulgence at last brought him
to sorrow. Sometime ago he went on a
ten-day spree and the hand that had
wieided the shining steel lost some of its
cunning. And Joe walked the plank—
in other words, Fed gave him the
bounce.
Then sadly, sorrowfully the erestwhile
dandy among the colored 400 folded his
tent and stole awayandv a; swullowe u >
in the great outside world. And there are
some who pine for Joe’s return.
It seems that he ran a iittle cigar stand
in the barber shop, which he sold on
commission, securing h:s stock from a
local manufacturer. Joe forgot to liqui
date some $25 due in the hurry of his de
parture. And they do say that there are
others who felt the sting.
Hutton has always borne the best
character and has always been esteemed
as one of the best negroes in the town.
His friends ray that he will return and
make things all right.
But just now several creditors are
wondering when.

of the leading New York law firms and
will have charge of the southern depart
ment of the firm.
Mr. Shropshire’s headquarters will be
'u Atlanta after September first. His
business will extend over Georgia, Ala
bama and Tennessee. His firm is con
cerned principally with railroad and
corporation law and his work will chiefly
consist in watching the effect of legisla

railroad cases in these three states,
Mr. Shropshire has been in Atlanta

MWTO’FINDOUr.
Fill a bottle or common glass with
urine and let it stand twenty-four hours;
a sediment or settling indicates an un
healthy condition of the kidneys. When
urine stains linen it is positive evidence
of kidney trouble. Too frequent desire
to urinate or pain in the back, is also
convincing proof that the kidneys and
bladder are out order.
What to Do.
There is comfort in the knowledge so
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer’s
Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy
fulfills every wish in relieving pain in
the back, kidneys, liver, bladder and
every part of the urinary passages. It
corrects inability to hold urine and
scalding pain in passing it, or bad effects
following use of liquor, wine or beer,
and overcomes that unpleasant neces
sity of being compelled to gel up many
times during tbe night to urinate. The
mild and extraordinary effect of
Swamp Root is soon realized. It stands
the highest for its wonderful cures of
the most distressing cases. If you need
a medicine you should have the best.

Do You Use It?
It’s the best thing for the
hair under all circumstances.
Just as no man by taking
thought can add an inch to
his stature, so no preparation
can make hair. The utmost
that can be done is to pro
mote conditions favorable to
growth. This is done by
Ayer’s Hair Vigor. It re
moves dandruff, cleanses the
scalp, nourishes the soil in
which the hair grows, and,
just as a desert will blossom
under rain, so bald heads grow
hair, when the roots are nour
ished. But the roots must be
there. If you wish your hair
to retain its normal color, or
If you wish to restore the lost
tint of gray or faded hair use

BLOW AT UNIVERSITY-

Atlanta, July 8.--There is a strong
suspicion that the investigation of unL
versity fui ds which the Hon. Pope
Brown has started has for its ultimate
object the withdrawal from that institu
tion of a part or all the money which
come to it from the landscrip fund and
the fund for ‘‘colleges of agriculture and

It does not look so from the com-
over which
Mr. Brown is to preside in this inves

gentlemen, all university men, who
compose a majority of the committee:
P. W. Meldrim, H A. Jenkins, Geo.

Uses of the Lemon,
From the Boston Traveler.
Juice of the lemon is one of the best
and safest drinks for any person,
whether in health or not. It is suitable
for all stomach diseases liver complaint,
inflammation of the bowels and fevers.
Lemon is used in intermittent fevers.
It will alleviate and finally cure coughs
and colds, and heal diseased lungs, if
taken hot. Its uses are manifold, and
the more we employ it internally, the
better we shall find ourselves. Lemon
juice is anti-febrile, etc. A doctor in
Rome is trying it experimentally in
malarial fever with great success, and
thinks it will in time supersede quinine.

Child Dead; "an and Woman Dying.
Cincinnati. July B.—William Deer, a
lumberman, fouud the bodies of a man
and woman, apparently dying, lying
side by side on a raft of logs moored to
the shore near the village of California,
a few miies above Cincinnati. Near
the raft the dead body o£ an infant was
taken from the water. The man and
woman were alive, but unable to speak.
Both their wrists were cut and bleeding
and other wounds indicated an attempt
at suicide. Both victims were well
dressed, but Deer was not able to get
any clew to their identity. A detail of
police has been sent from here to probe
the mystery.

CROP OUTLOOK IS BRIGHT.
The Past Week Very Favorable For Every,
thing Except Cotton.
Washington, July B.—The weather
bureau, in its report of crop condition!
for the week ended July 5, says that in
the states of the central valleys, lak«
region and New England, the week has
been very favorable to crops, the high
temperatures being especially favorable
to corn.
In the southern st ites the conditions
have been iess favorable, the excessive
heat and absence of rainfall proving in
jurious to most crops.
In the priucipal corn states of the
beutral valleys corn has made rapid
growth, but in the southern states it is
suffering for rain, in some sections se
riously. In Texas, whue the late crop
is suffering from drouth, the early
planting is matured and a good yield
assured.
Cotton is needing rain over the greatel
part of the cotton belt, more particu
larly the southern portions Tne crop
is, however, generally clean and fruit
ing well. A marked improvement is
reported from Oklahoma, and it is doing
well in Missouri, Tennessee. North Car
olina and portions of Florida. In south
ern Texas bolls are beginning to open.
Tobacco has continued to improve
generally, but is still in poor condition
in Kentucky. A marked improvement
is reported from Ohio, and the crop is
doing well in Missouri, Pennsylvania
and Maryland. Transplanting has been
completed in New England and New
York, and cutting is in progress in the
Carolinas. ,

San Francisco, July 8. —Mr. A. G.

who, as he expected, was among the

Mr. Stacey arrived here Tuesday
