Sidney Lascelles and Wife’s Whereabouts
Are Unknown.
SHERIFF LEVIES OH LASCELLES STORE
Prroted By Creditors on All Sides and Refused
aid By Hu Father-In-Law ;He Wae
Forced to Flee.
Fitzgerald, the. niag'c city of wire
grass of Georgia, is minus one Sidney
Lascelles, alias Lotd Beresjord, says a
special to yesterday’s Constitution, It
was last Saturday that Lascelles
and his new wife left for Savannah for
the purpose, they said, of meeting Mr.
Pelky, Mrs. Lascelle’s father, who was to
arrive Sunday morning by steamer from
New lork. It «as generally known here
that Lascelles was in financial straits and
he for some time past had been putting
off his creditors, that he was expecting
his father-in-law to telegraph money
eveiy day, but lor some reason he said
he had not heard a word from Mr. Pelky,
Thus matters stood until last Wednesday
afternoon, when Sheriff Handley took
charge of Lascelles’ so-called wholesale
store and posted the following notice on
the door:
NOTICE.
“Georgia, Irwin County—This is to
notify all persons 'that I have levied two
attachments, one in favor of Frank Pap
worth vs. Sidney Lascelles, and one in
favor of Frank Papworth, Smith Bros,
et al. vs. Sidney Lascelles, returnable to
the October term, 1897, of the county
court of Irwin county, on the contents of
this store. . ■
“R. V. Handley, Sheriff.”
The closing of La^ elle ’ 8 P lace of
business caused COJasiderable talk this
morning and of course many rumors
were in circulation. Frank Papworth,
Smith Bros,, et al. were the gentlemen
who caused Lascelle’s place of busi
ness to be closed. This was done to
secure themselves on a note they had
indorsed for Lascelle for SSOO. Various
reports are in circulation in regard to
Lascelles, but up to noon his where
abouts are not known to anyone here
in Fitzgerald, It is known to be a fact
that Lascelles was in Savannah last
Sunday. Wednesday evening Sheriff
Handley wired the proper officer at
Savannah to arrest Lascelles when
this morning he received a message
from Savannah saying:
“Lascelles not in the'city; left Mon
day.”
Whether has skipped the
country for cannot be positively
stated, but it is known to be true
that his father-in-law refused to lend
him financial aid. This aid was asked
for in Savannah, but refused. Mr.
Pelky, it is reported, said to his
daughter: “Leave him (Lascelles) and
go back with me to Fitzgerald and I
will be a father to you, as I have al
ways been; otherwise I will not give
you a dollar.”
The daughter then replied:. “I will
go with my husband if he has not a
dollar.”
At least that is a part of the conver
sation Mr. Pelky is reported to have
had with his daughter before taking
his departure for Fitzgerald. It is
known that Lascelles is badly in debt,
his obligations footing up several
thousand dollars, many of his credi
tors being rather reticent as to the
amount.
When Sidney Lascelles came to Fitz-
Scrofula
Is a deep-seated blood disease which
all the mineral mixtures in the world
cannot cure. S.S.S. {guaranteedpurely
vegetable ) is a real blood remedy for
blood diseases and has no equal.
Mrs. Y. T. Buck, of Delaney, Ark., had
Scrofula for twenty-five years and most
of the time was under the care of the
doctors who could not relieve her. A
S specialist said he
could cure her, but
he filled her with
arsenic and potash
which, almost ruined
her constitution. She
then took nearly
every so-called blood
medicine and drank
them by the wholesale,
'but they did not reach
,her trouble. Some
one advised her to try
S.S.S. and she very
soon found that she ha i a real blood
remedy at last. She says: “After tak
ing one dozen bottles of S.S.S. I am
perfectly well, my skin is clear
and healthy and I would not be in
my former condition for two thousand
dollars. Instead of drying upthepoison
in my system, like the potash and
arsenic, S.S.S. drove the disease out
through the skin, and I was perma
nently rid of it.”
A Real Blood Remedy.
S.S.S. never fails to cure Scrofula,
Eczema, Rheumatism Contagious Blood
Poison, or any disorder of the blood.
Do not rely upon a simple tonic to cure
a deep-seated blood disease, but take a
real blood remedy. *

gerald his record was as plain as an open
book, but notwithstanding this fact, our
people encouraged him in everything
honorable,, a number of them going so
far as to lend him financial aid. This
was done on the strength of strong let
ters of recommendation from ex-Gov
ernor Noithtrn, Mr. Gress and other
prominent people of Atlanta. But they,
like a number of others, it would seem,
have been grossly deceived. In this
connection permit us to say that Mr.
Pelky is not to blame for the unfortu
nate marriage of his daughter. He 1
has the the reputation of being an ;
honorable, upright man. and as the
■ marriage of an only child to Lascelles,
he did all in his power to prevent it.
In his pleadings with the child he loved
so well, he tendered his daughter his en
tire fortune if she would not wed Las
celles’ But, as is well known, a father’s
bitter tears and a large sum of money
were of no avail.
If what is said of Lascelles is true,
there will be two more chapters in his
history, conviction and chaingang,
provided, of course, “my lord’’ is
caught, which we believe will be the
case.
Lascelles Cannot Be Found,
Savannah, Ga., July 9.—Continued
search here has failed to reveal the
nresence of the erstwhile lord, Sidney
Lascelles, and there is little doubt
now that he has left Savannah.
His whereabouts are unknown.

ALL JAPAN WROUGHT UP. 1
■ t
Claims That She 1* Vitally Interested In 1,
the Status ul Uavrui 1
San Francisco, July 9.—Advices by
the steamer City of Peking, just arrived *
from the Orient: The Japanese Times ]
of recent date devotes a long article to j
a discussion of the annexation situation, I
over which the entire Japanese press is
greatly wrought up. The promise of
the argument in this paper, as reprinted
by the Hawaiian Star, is that Japan
has no territorial interest in the Ha
waiian Islands. Speaking of the sign
ing of the annexation treaty, it says:
“Whatever may have been the case,
it is to be deeply regretted that the step
has been taken without consulting the
views of Japan, which is, next to Amer
ica, m >st vitally interested in the status
of the Hawaiian islands.”
This, the Hawaiian Star considers as
“arrogance with a vengeance, and
says:
“We have employed Japanese as la
borers, but that does not give Japan
any ‘vital interest’ in the islands. This
is a country of Anglo-Saxon civiliza
tion, not of Asiatic. Its Jaws, its re
ligion, its thought is Anglo-Saxon. Its
affinities are with the UnitednStates.,
and one fails to see what ‘vital inter
ests’ Japan has here.”

HAWAIIANS DISAPPOINTED.
Had Hoped to Hear of the Annexation
Treaty Being Ratified.
San Francisco, July 9.—The steam
ship City of Peking, just arrived, was
a day behind her regular time. Cap
tain Smith explained the delay by say
ing the vessel was detained at Hono
lulu, on a request from the officers of
the Hawaiian government, who asked
that the steamer remain in the harbor
until the Mariposa from San Francisoo
should arrive, on which the Hawaiians
hoped to hear of the annexation treaty
ratified by the United Stares senate and
that they con d-carl themselves Ameri
cans.
The leaders of the annexation party
had purchased ail tue firecrackers on the
islands in anticipatv-n of news favora
ble to their way of managing the islanus
and they were preparing for a big cele
bration, but the news to fuliy suit them
did not come and the celebration was
declared off.
The Hawaiians intended by holding
the steamer tb be able to send congratu
latory messages on tne Peking to their
new kinsmen on this shore of the Pa
cific.

The Situation In Illinois
Springfield, Ills., July 9. The
miners’ strike situation iu Illinois is as
follows: All the miners in the Wil

out. In the Peoria district all of the
miners are still working. The miners
of Staunton have gone out on assurance
that the Belleville miners would strike,
but the Belleville men at their meeting
decided to go to work. At Carlinville
there is no-strike. Warden and Auburn
miners struck weeks ago. The miners
at Assumption are out, but at Pana and
Taylorville are working. At Westville,
Vermillion county, the miners are out
but are at work at Danville.
West Virginians Quit Work.
Wheeling, July 9.—lt had been an

Erie management that its Dillon Na 2
mine at Dillonvale would resume Fri
day morning with the miners protected
by a numerous posse of United States

The men had got together the night be

Electric Bitters.
Electric Bitters is a medicine suited
for any season, but perhaps more gen

is torpid and sluggish and the need of a
