ATLANTA PREPARES
Will Entertain Confederate Veterans
Royally Next Year.
GINER L EYIN) MAKES AN APPEAL
The Sons of Veteran* and Daughter* of f!on
federacy Will Also Meet in the Gate
City at the Same Time.
The coming of the United Confed
erate Veterans’ Association and the
Sons and Daughters of the Confedei*
acy to this city is the talk of the busi
ness men of Atlanta, says the Consti
tution, although that event is still
almost one year distant.. It is the in
tention of those who are interested in
the matter to make the next reunion
of the veterans the most notable one
that has yet been held, and the pres
ent indications are that their effor s
will not be in vain.
Not only will the veterans them
selves be here in full force, but the
Sons of Veterans and the Daughters
of the Confederacy will also besiege
the city. This if a new departure in
the reunions of the veterans and it is
thought it will add a great deal to
the occasion.
Besides these additions, the veterans
themselves are expected to be present in
greater numbers than at any previous
reunion. In all between 125.000 and
150,000 visitors will probably be in the
city on the days of the conventions,
and they will be entertained in a man
ner that will do great credit to the
city.
It is not thought that the outlay wi'l
be very large, but no matter what the
Amount be, the citizens have announced
their intention of providing for the
-visitors in a lavish manner, and in a
-way that will leave a lasting impression
Oh them.
During the time that they are in the
city they will be given homes in the
hotels and private families. Gen.
Clement A. Evans has already addressed
letters to the prominent Georgians
throughout the state informing them
of the meetings of the veterans next
year and reminding them of the duty
which they owe to the state in making
the reunion a success.
In sp laking of the matter yesterday
General Evans said: “The veterans of the
state will, of course, take no part in the
entertainment, as they themselves are
considered guests. We expect, however,
that every man who loves his state will
help to make the reunion a success, and
I have no doubt that every one will rally
to the front whenever they are needed. ,
“And especially do we expect the peo
ple of this city to see that the meeting of
the veterans is the largest that* has yet
been. It is a duty that every man owes
and we have no fears along this line.
“The reunion will be the largest that
has yet been held, unless all signs fail.
I have no doubt that the number in at
tendance will exceed 100,000. By no
means an inconsiderable part of the re
union will be the meeting of the Sons qf
Veterans and the Daughters of the Con
federacy.
“Great stress will be laid on the
gathering of tbe young people, and
they will do much toward making a
success of the reunion. They will all
be in the line of march and will be
present at the meetings. 1 sincerely
hope that the citizens will take the
matter up at once and provide for the
veterans. ”

the very edge of danger
all unconsciously. They
do not wake up to the
truth that the slight symp

they feel may, at any in

serious or fatal illness.
Once the “running
down ” process begins it
is speedy and there’s no
telling how it will end.

“ I was taken ill in February, 1892, with a head
ache and pain in my back,”, writes H. Gaddis,
Esq., of No. 313 S. J. Street, Tacoma, Wash. "I
called in a doctor and he came three times. He
said I was bilious, but I kept getting worse. I
took a cough so that I could not sleep only by
being propped in bed. My lungs hurt me, and
I got so poor that I was just skin and bone. I
thought I w.-.s going to die. till one day I saw
the ' Golden Medical Discovery ’ recommended
for a cough. I tried a liottle ol it and it did me
so much good that I tried another one, and it
mil* me sound and well, so I can recommend
It to everybody. It saved my life."
FOR CONSTIPATION,
no remedy in the world is equal to Dr.
Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets, which act nat
urally and mildly, but never fail to effect
a pom pie te and permanent cure. There
is no substitute for these “ Pellets," no
matter what any druggist may say. They
regulate and invigorate the Stomach, Livei

A MOST WONDERFUL CAVE.
Pit That Apparently Lead* to the Other
World l»i«oovere<i In Colorado.
CbippiA Creek, Colo., July 13.—Pho
tographer Yelton has returned from a
trip to ; Cow mountain, about 6 miles
east of this city, where he had been to
obtain view». of a most remarkable cav
ern, discoveied by sinking a prospect
shaft. The cave was discovered by Yel
ton during work on his claim on Cow
mountain.
He cautiously investigated and there
opened a pit that led into the other
world, to all appearance/ Rocks drop
ped into the ho.e, however, struck bot
tom in about two seconds or less, show
ing that the cave was not so deep at
that point. Men got a rope and fasten
ing it securely above descended to ex
plore the immense cavern, which proved
to be a veritable storehouse of ice.
Stalagnites and stalactites of pure ice
stood like cypress tretfi from the floor
and hung like a ghostly fringe from the
ceiling.
Exploration was not carried very far,
as a yawning abyss was encountered at
a distance of about 50 feet from the en •
trance. Chunks of ice thrown down
this abyss could be heard rattling and
clanking on the sides, but never a sound
of the bottom being touched. Photo
graphs were taken by flashlight and the
pictures reveal the ice in crystal condi
tion founing most fanciful figures. An
effort will be made to open the cave to
a m>re thorough exploration. The
chamber where these pictures were
taken is 75 feet high and about 25 feet
wide. Beyond this the cave widens
and the interior seems abyssmal.

THE ROME TRIBUNE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 14. 1897
HAND PRIMARY WAS HELD.
Mol aurin and ttvAnt Tested Their Strength
With the Audience.
Hampton, SO., Ju’y 13.—The cam
paign meeting here was attended by 300
out of the 1,500 white voters. Senator
McLaurin reintroduced, the hand pri
mary, started by Senator Tillman. Mc-
Laurin wanted to know how many
thought his tariff policy right. About
half the audience raised their hands
and applauded. L iter on ex- Governor
Evans called for a raising of hands of
all who raised short staple cotton and
only a few raised their hands, much to
the amazement qf fl'l.
Senator McLaurin said that Egyptian
cotton had almost driven out Pee Dee
and Allan cottons. He favored the Lat
imer dispensary bill because he thought
the state and uot the nation should dis
pose of the liquor question for South
Carolina. Ex-Governor Evans said’ if
Senator McLaurin’s tariff views pre
vailed it would impose a 10 per ceut tax
on the farmers who used manufactured
goods.
Candidate Mayfield opposed the state
dispensary aud denied emphatically
that he was in any political deal or com
bination, as he was the very first to an
nounce his senatorial candidacy.
Ex-Senator Irby denounced all alleged
political plots to el set McLaurin and
said that the newspapers were not giv
ing the people what they wanted. He
said General Butler told him that Mc-
Laurin had said that Tillman told him
(McLaurin) that he was going to break
his political neck. This, Irby says, was
the beginning of the present estrange
ment between himself aud Tillman,
since healed.
Senator McLaurin said he had no re
collection of the matter.

Alaska Prospectors Discover Enough Oil
slid Coat to 'Upply the World.
Seattle, Wash., July 13.—What is
said to be the greatest discovery ever
made is reported from Alaska. Some
gold prospectors several mouths ago ran
across what seemed to be a lake of oil.
It was fed by innumerable springs and
the surrounding mouutaius were fu.l of
coal. They brought samples to Seattle
and thus proved it to be of as high a
grade as any ever taken out of the
Pennsylvania wells.
A local company was formed and ex
perts sent up. They have returned on
the steamer Topeka aud their report
has more tnau borne out first reports
It is said there is enough oil and coal in
the discovery to supply the world. It
is close to the ocean, in fact, the ex
perts say that the oil oozes out into the
salt water. ,
It is said that the Standard Oil com
pany has already made an offer for the
property. The owners are naturally
very much excited over their prospects .
for fortune. # .
It heals everything except a broken
heart, may be said of-DeWitt's Witch
