Rome District Conference Continues in
East Rome.
THE EPWORTH LEAGUE LAST NIGHT
The Church Crowded "to Heer the Splendid
Program Rendered—Some Confer
.one Notes of Interest.
The district conference now is ses
sion in the Howard avenue church in
East Rome is one of the best and most
interesting ever held in Rome.
The meeting is marked by an un
usually large attendance. Some of
the ablest and strongest ministers in
North Georgia are present, and many
lay delegates.
Rev. A. A. Tilley, pastor of the
Howard avenue church has . had a
busy time as host, but, he has seen
every one provided with good homes,
and has not been idle a single mo
ment.
The conference convened yesterday
morning at 9 o’clock, with Rev. T. F.
Pieree, presiding. Reports were read
from maay of the churches through
out the district, and all were shown
to be in a prosperous condition.
Rev. E. W. Ballenger, president of
Piedmont Institute, Rockmart, made
an earnest appeal in behalf of his
school. This school is under charge
of the North Georgia conference, and
during the eight years it has been es
tablished has accomplished a wonder
ful work.
The ministers of the conterence pkdged
themselves to stand by the institute and
work for its upbuilding. Rev. S. R. Belk
introduced a resolution endorsing the
school and the noble work it is doing
for the poor boys and girls of North
Georgia. The resolution called on preach
ers to do all in their power for its good.
i The resolution was adopted. About SIOO
' was raised for the institute.
At 11 o’clock Rev. B. P. Allen preach
ed a strong sermon on the patience of
Paul. He is an earnest, zealous man, a
good pulpit orator, and a hard student.
He is one of the strong figures in the
North Georgia conference and is pro
nounced a coming man. A very large
congregation was present and listened
with profound attention to the truths ut
tered.
At 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon Prof.
J. E. Dickey lectured in behalf of Emory
college, He showed the wonderful work
accomplished by the school and the pow
er for good it was in the state. His talk
was earnest and evidenced the deep in
terest he takes in the college.
Mrs. Jud Crabb, of Cedartown, then
read a very strong and interesting re
port on the work done by the Ladies’
Parsonage Aid and Home Mission So
ciety. Mrs. Crabb is secretary of the
society, and through her efforts a so
ciety will probably be formed in East
Rome.
Last evening was devoted to the
special program of the Epworth
Leagues in the city. The church was
again crowded to its capacity to hear
the following interesting program
rendered:
Program.
Singing by the congregation.
Prayer by Rev. T. F. Pierce.
Rev. T. P. Graham, of the North
Rome church, made a strong speech
on the “Necessity of an Epworth
League.”
Rev. C. M. Verdell, of the Third
church, Rome, and one of the most
scholarly men in the conference,
made an eloquent’talk on the “Power
of Young Life,”
Music by the choir.
Rev. B. P. Allen, of Cartersville,
made an interesting speech on the
“Loyalty of Young People to the
Church.
Rev. C. C. Carey of Cedartown spoke
on “The League and Missions,”
Music by the choir.
Rev. S. R. Belk, of the First church
Rome, spoke on the Devotional de
partment of the Epworth League.
Rev. E. W. Ballenger on the Charity
and help department of the Epworth
League.
Miss Emily Allen, of Forsyth, on
Literary department of Epworth
League.
All of the speeches were limited to
five minutes, and a general discussion
followed after each. Altogether it was
a most enjoyable evening, and there
is not a league in Rome that will not
be helped by it.
The conference will assemble for
business again this morning at 9
o’clock, and preaching at 11 o’clock.

of Weslyn Female college will be here
to present his claims for Weelyan be
fore tbe conference in the afternoon.
At' 2 o’clock this afternoon the
quarterly conference of the Howard
Avenue church will convene.
Conference Notes.
Rev. A. A. Tilley, pastor of the
Howard Aveuue church, is receiving
many compliments for the splendid and
hospitable manner in which he has treat"
ed his guests. It is his third year as
pastor of the East Rome church, and it
has thrived and grown wonderfully under
his ministry. He is very popular, and is
an earnest, zealous Christian.
i Prof. E. W. Ballenger, of Rockmart,
is one of the notable figures present.
He is at the head of Piedmont Institute
at Rockmart,' and under bis wise guid
ance it has grown to be one of the
strongest schools in the state. Prof,
Ballenger is an indefatigable worker,
and one of the ablest ministers present.
Dr, John B. Robbins, of Atlanta, who
has been present a few days, returned to
Atlanta yesterday. He is one of the
deepest thinkers and most eloquent
divines in the south today.
Rev. H P. Myers, who is connected
with the American Bible society, is hero
and will make a speech before the con
ference.
Prof. J. E. Dickey, of Emory, is one
of the South’s brainiest young men. He
is scholarly and of magnificent phy
sique. He is strikingly handsome,
and would be singled out in any gath
ering as a man of marked ability.
Rev. W A. Harris, of Rockmart, is a
very magnetic man. He is strong, rag
ged, and always holds his congregations
with his earnestness and his personal
magnetism. Besides he is as witty as
can be, and his fine flashes always at
tract a crowd around him. He came
from the California Conference' two
years ago. He was stationed at Phoenix,
Arizona, but had to come south on ac
count of his health. Tbe future ’8
bright for him.
Rev. Sam P. Jones is expected here
Sunday to preach, but no definite in
formation as to when he will arrive
and at what church he will preach
could be obtained last night.
All of the city churches will be oc
cupied by visiting ministers on Sun
day. The announcements will be
made in Sunday’s paper.
“I have never had a day’s sickness in
my life,’’said a middle-aged man the
other day.
•‘What a comfort it would be,” sighs
some poor invalid, “to be in his place
for a year or two.” Yet half of the in
valids we see might be just as healthy as
he, if they would only take proper care
of themselves, eat proper food— and
digest it.
It’s so strange that such simple things
are overlooked bj those who want health.
Food makes health.
It makes strength—and strength wards
off sickness. The man who had never
been sick was strong because he always
digested his food, and you could beeome
the 'ame by helping your stomach to
work as well as his. Shaker Digestive
Cordial will help your stomach and will
make you strong and healthy by making
the food you eat make you fat.

• SMALLPOX SCARE.
Birmingham Has the Third Scare of the
Present Summer Beason.
Birmingham is in the midst of
another smallpox scare, the third this
summer. This time there are four
well-defined case of smallpox, or some
disease closely resembling it. The
matter was taken notice of of
ficially by the board of health today,
which body met and drew up a state
ment of conditions for presentation to
the city council, which met in special
session at noon. The statement con
tained information as to the existence
of the disease and recommended that
a pest station be arranged on Red
mountain, and that in the absence of
a pest house tents be used, and all
the parties now afflicted with the
disease be sent to the mountain and
properly guarded and cared for. Th®
council concurred in the recommen
dations and action was taken to put
them into effect. This afternoon all
the smallpox parties, as well as the
suspected cases, were sent out of town.
An order for general vaccination has
been issued by the board of health.
The houses where smallpox cases
have existed have also been ordered
disinfected. Every precaution is be
ing taken to prevent the farther spread
of this disease. It is not k nown where
the last smallpox case came from. It
is thought, however, that the disease
was brought here from Carbon Hill by
a negro, some thirty cases having ex
isted at that place. Considerable ap
prehension exists over the smallpox
developments, but no general alarm
is felt, as the greater part of Birming
ham’s population was vaccinated
when the first scare came some weeks
ago.—Birmingham News.

Their board—this happens every day,
When the wife’s av. ay!
“This town is full of wifeless homes
these hot, sultry ddjs of midsummei,”
remarked a Congiess street lawyer, says
the Savannah News, as he emerged from
his office door, polled his straw hat down
over his eyes, and looked about the
streets, saluting this man or that and ask
ing nearly all of them how they were
managing to keep from being lonely since
their wives had gone off for the summer.
“Yes,” he went on to say, “about this
time every year the women folks leave
for the mountains or for the seaside up
north and we men have to endure a siege
of desertion most desolate.”
About this time a friend came along
—one of the deserted, it was clear—
and asked the speaker to step aside
for a moment. Then followed a lively
conversation in a low tone in which
such words as “squeeze the paste
boards,” “what’s the limit,” “who’s
all coming,” and such terms were con
spicuous.
It really is too bad how the Savan
nah husbands are deserted by their
wives every summer. Too bad!
