Great Presence of Mind.
Dock Jennings, colored, porter on
train No. 1, on the Chattanooga, Rome
and Columbus railroad, met with an
accident at 6:40 o’clock yesterday even
ing in Chattanooga, says the Times
which will render him a cripple for the
remainder of his days.
Jennings is about 27 years old, mar
ried, but with no children. He lives in
Cedartown, Ga., and has been in the
employ of the named railroad for sev
eral years.
Yesterday evening as train No. 1 was
pulling in from Rome, Jennings, after
throwing a switch on the approach to
the city, jumped on the pilot of the en
gine, and when the train reached the
target opposite the C. R. &C. shops
and at the junction of the Western and
Atlantic and Cincinnati Southern
jumped off to throw the switch, as was
his custom and duty. He had done
this thousands of times before, but on
this occasion he slipped and fell in the
middle of the track directly in front of
the engine. He had presence of mind
enough to quickly roll himself from
the track, but before he could remove
his legs the front or small wheels, and
also the big driving wheels of the en
gine passed ovfer his legs, crushing them
to a pulp.
He was picked up in an unconscious
state, placed in a hack and driven to
Sharp’s stables, from which place he was
transported to the county hospital in the
ambulance.
Drs, Baxter and Holtzclaw were sum -
mongd and at midnight last night com
pleted the task of amputating both of the
unfortunate man’s legs above the knee.
Jenuiugs was under the influence of
opiates during this operation, whieh was
performed with great skill and celerity.
At 2 o’clock this morning he was report
ed resting easy after the operation.
Jennings is a person of some means
and it is said has considerable insurance
in an accident company.

COAX, FOR ROME.
Local Situation a. Learnd by a Tribune Man
Yesterday,
In July and August the people of
Rome generally make their arrange

The contracts are made then and de
livery of coal is made generally in all
cases by the middle of September.
Owing to the great coal strike the
Rome dealers in coal have been unable
to deliver the coal for winter orders.

found that up to the present while,
these deliveries of coal have not been
made, yet it is likely that all can soon
be supplied. , About ninety per cent of
the coal used in Rome comes from the
Jellico district. The operators of
that district in a letter received ves
terday state they expect the strike to
be settled in that district before the
end of this week. Active shipments
will begin tbe first of next week they
think. This will relieve the local situ
ation should it turn out as is expected.

Land Os the Sky.
In Western North Carolina, between
the Blue Ridge on the East and tbe
Alleghanies on the West, in the beau

thousand feet above the Sea, lies
Asheville, beautiful, picturesques and
world-famed as one of the most pleas

It is a land of bright skies and in
comparable climate, whose praises
have been sung by poets, and whose
beauties of stream, valley and moun

and inspiration for painters brush.
This is truly the “land of the sky,”

pleasure tourists of health seekers.

Mny Be an Incipient Volcano.
Thomasville, Ga., Aug. 12.—A farm
in the neighborhood of this city is being
visited by hundreds of curious people,
viewing the queer spectacle of what
seems to be an iucipient volcano. The
crater is about 25 feet square and out of
small apertures issues thick smoke. The
ground in the immediate vicinity has
receded 2 feet below the surface. Ex
cavations reveal a thick bed of live coals
just under the surfadb. Repeated rains
have not affected the phenomenon. It
can only be accounted for on the hy
pothesis of the existence of subterrane
ous fire.
