Scotty’s Reckless Generosity.
On his first visit to Aberdeen an Eng
lish commercial traveler, having receiv
ed some marks of kindness from one of
its inhabitants, exclaimed in an offhand
.way on his departure:
“If at any time you or any of your
people come up to London, don’t put up
at a hotel, -but come to us.”
“Oh, thank ye!” replied the Scot la
conically, and away the southron went.
Six mouths passed, and the English
man had long forgotten the incident,
when, to his surprise, he received one
morning the following note:
My Dear Friend—As myself, my wife and
four children are coming up to London for a
fortnight, we will be glad to avail ourselves
of your kind invitation.
Facing the situation with unquestion
able courage, the southerner put him
self to unutterable inconvenience to ac
commodate his guests. He took them
everywhere, paid for everything, and
at the end of the stipulated time they
announced their departure. The host ac
companied them to the station and in
the fullness of his gratitude at the ex
odus invited the father to have a part
ing drink.
“Come along, old fellow. What is it
to be—whisky and soda,' as usual? Tw'O
Scotches and soda, please, miss.”
“Na, na!” replied the Scot solemnly.
“Nane o’ that. Ye’ve been veraguid to
me and mine durin the last fortnicht—•
hae ta’en us everywhere and paid for
everything. Na, na; we’U hae a toss
for the last.”—London Answers.
Fakirs.
Fakirs is the name given to a cele
brated class of fanatics found in many
parts of the east, but more particularly
in India. Some of them .will make a
vow to continue all their lives in one
posture and adhere to it strictly. Others
never lie down, but remain in a stand
ing position all their lives, upheld only
by sticks or ropes under the armpits.
They pretend to have subdued every
passion of mortality.

Japanese Self Sacrifice.
On board the Matsushima one man,
who had been shot in the abdomen and
whose intestines were protruding from
the gaping wounds, refused to be car
ried to the surgeon’s ward, because, he
said, he did not want to take any of the
fighters from their work in order to
carry him below. Another, after hav
ing had his body burned out of all
recognition in attempting to extinguish
a fire, stood by helping all he could till
the flames were put out, when he died.
A third (mortally wounded) man, whose
every gasp brought forth a gush of
blood, would not close his eyes until he
had told ft comrade, where the key of an
important locker was and what the
locker contained. A chief gunner, whose
under jaw had been shot away and who
could, of course, not utter a word,
signed to a subordinate with a nod to
take his place and fell dead after he‘
had placed the handle of the gun lever
in his subordinate’s hand.—“ Heroic

GEORGIA’S TAXES HIGHER.
Teachers Mast Wall—lmportant Decision
In Regard to SclGrol Appropriations.
Atlanta, Aug. Xr- —Governor Atkin
son and Comptroller General Wright
have fixed tne tax rate for the state of
Georgia for the y<-ar 1897.
The rate is a large increase over that
of the two preceding years, but is at the
same time smaller than was anticipated
by the state officials aud the legislature.
Georgia citizens will have to pay 5.21
mills per 100 cents as state tax. The
tax rate is based ou property returns of
$-110,000,000. The tax is divided as fol
lows: School fund, J. 50 mills; sinking
fund to retire public debt, 0 26 mills;
pensions, 1.50 nii.ls; general govern
mental purposes, 1.95 mills. Total,
5.21 mills.
Sixty-five cents per SI,OOO is the in
crease in tax over the rate of last year.
This represents an increase in revenue
pf over $2416 000.
The announcement of a rate of but
5.21 mills will create a great surprise as
the impression had been generally cre
ated that the rate would be about 0.25
mills. This impression had grown from
tile belief that the money to pav tne
extra appropriations tor schools would
have to be raised tins year.
The governor and comptroller decided
that the act of last year granting, the
increased appropriation for uext year
did not authorize the collection of the
money this year. They decided that
the money to pay next year’s school ap
propriation must be raised next year.
Tins will involve a delay in paying
$400,000 of next year’s school salaries.
The tax cannot be raised uutii the latter
part of the year and the teachers will
be compelled to wait until the end of
the year for $400,000.
