TO BURN IN EFFIGY
What Would Have Happened If Gov.
Atkinson Had Commuted
THE SENTENCE OF H. S PERRY
The Condemned Murderer Who Must Hang
Next Wedors’ay—Calin Rad Keen
Issued For ladignatKn Meetiag.
The Atlanta Constitution of yesterday
says:
If Governor Atkinson had commuted
the sentence of H. S. Perry, he would
have been burned in effigy the night
after he announced his decision.
Calls had already been issued for an
indignation meeting to have been held
' in the event of the governor rendering
a decision favorable to Perry.
Some Os the most prominent men in
DeKalk county were identified with the
movement for a meeting in which to
express indignation. The feeling against
Perry seems to have been very strong,
and hundreds of men said that it would
be an outrage if Perry was commuted.
A figure in effiy had already been pre
pared to be burned. It is said on the
best of authority that'oue of the leading
county officials had the figure made, and
would have led the crowd that intended
to burn the effigy of the chief executive.
It is certain that there was a well-formed
plan to have the indignation meeting.
One of the men who was concerned in
the meeting that was held several times
asked the representative of The Constitu
tion to be ready and go down to the
meeting.
ThC expression of indignation was id
.'have .baeA public, and would have been
held in the -ftOUtf house at Dec dur. It
was rumored that an attempt would have
been made to lynch Flanagan if Perry
ihad been commuted,
Governor Atkinson heard nothing of
the call for the meeting until after he had
announced his decision. He said then
that it could not have influenced his opin
ion if he had known it all along.
Perry wrote another letter to
Governor Atkinson yesterday. It was
a little warmer than the first. The
prisoner again asked the governor to
visit him in the jail, where he said he
wanted to pray together. Perry said
he wanted to pray for the governor,
and wanted to pray for him. He
openly charged the governor with
acting just as Judge Candler dictated.
Perry’s wife visits him several times
a day, but she is not allowed to see
him except in the prensenee of a
guard, and even then she cannot go
into his cell. She was with him fora
larger part of yesterday. Their meet
ing was pathetic. Both Perry and
his wife sobbed bitterly, and Perry
wept while she was talking to him.
Perry’s wife will get $4,000 insurance
when he is hanged. He has that
amount of life insurance in companies
whese polices are incontestable, and
there will be no trouble in collecting
the money. This $4,000 will be all
that she will have, however, as all of
Perry’s property has been expended
in paying for the defense.
Perry has given up all hope, and
says he knows he will have to die.
He reads his Bible constantly and
prays a great deal. He says he must
save his soul.
▲ Remarkable Cure of Chronic Diarrhoea.
In 1862, when I served my country as
a private in Company A. 167 ch Penn
sylvania Volunteers, 1 contracted
chronic diar-ihoea. It has given me a
great deal of trouble ever since. I have
tried a dozen different medicines and
several prominent doctors without any
permanent relief. Nor, long ago a friend
sent me a sample bottle of Chamber
lain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea
Remedy, and after that I bought and
took a 50 cent bottle and now I can say
that I am entirely cured. I cannot be

THE REVOLUTION IN INDIA.
No Decisive New. Received From Aey
Point Aloni; tile Frontier.
Bombay, India, Sept. 2 —There is no
decisive news from anywhere along the
frontier. The centers of interest are
Hanguans Shabkdar, where serious
fighting is imminent. The Second reg
iment of Gourkhas, with Brigadier
General Yeatmau-Biggs and staff, has
arrived at Han gu.
The camp, winch was open and scat
tered, has been transformed into a de
fensible position, surrounded by shel
tered trenches and breastworks of earth
bags. Tne camp is also well stored
with ammunition. According to relia
ble reports, there are 10,000 hostile
Orakzais in the hills surrounding
Haugu. General Yeatmau-Biggs has
with him a mountain battery*, the Royal
Irish regiment and five native regi
ments.
Advices from Shabkdar say that the
Haddah Mullah is threatening the fron
tier of that place, where the enemy has
collected in great numbers. Colonel
Mills, who is in command at Shabkdar,
has at his disposal the Twentieth Pun
jab infantry, the Thirty-ninth Gourk
has. the Thirteenth Regal lancers, a
battery of field artillery and a wing of
the Somersetshire light infantry. The
balance of the Somersetshire regiment
and the Twenty-sixth Punjab infantry
are on their way to reinforce Colonel
Mills at Shabkdar.

CONFERENCE IN COLUMBUS.
Coal Operator* a«i<i Mhier.i' Officials Meet
With ihmr* * loeed.
Columbus. O , Sept. f» —The coal op
erators met the miners' national com
mittee behind closed doors. All were
present on the respective sides. The
miners’ officials dec.ined to foreshadow
any movement in case of a refusal of
the operators’ proposition to open the
mines at 64 cents a ton pending arbi
tration. They were willing to talk of
general conditions and nothing else, ex
cept that they want the agreement, if
any is reached, to hold good for one
year.
On the other hand the operators feel
very hopeful, in fact very confident that
the miners will accept and refer the 64-
cent rate to their constituents. The
operators are willing to make reasona
ble concessions which may cover a pe
riod of 12 months.

Columbia. S. 0., Sept. 3.—The death
of Dr. J. Rufus Bratton in Yorkville
recalls the fact that he entertained

life by Mr. Davis. Dr. Bratton was a
distinguished surgeon and was in charge
of the Milledgeville. Ga.. hospital in
the latter part of the war. He was a
leading spirit in the kuklnx organiza

EIVER MEDICINE CERTIFICATES.
Write us Ist How long you have known,
used or sold Dr. M. A. Simmons Liver Medi
cine. 2nd State Diseases it cured. 3d Give
names of those cured. 4th State the differ
ence between its strength and action and
the strength and action of J. H. Zeilln
& Co.’s “Liver Regulator” and the Chatta
nooga Medicine Co.’s “Black Draught,” both
of which contain Woody Bulbs of Roots and
Stems of Herbs, and have sold at about 6
cents per package, and should not retail at
over 10 cents if consumers are not imposed
upon, while Dr. M. A. Simmons Liver Medi
cine, made from the purest and most care
fullyselected Drugs, regardlessof cost, with
the Bulbs of the Roots and Stems of the
Herbs by our secret process extracted and
thrown away, cannot be sold at less than 25
cents. The reason of the difference is this:
On June 30th, 1893, the Supreme Court
enjoined J. H. Zeilln A Co. from manufact
uring and selling medicine under the name
of “Dr. Simmons’ Liver Medicine.”
Zeilin’sanswertoour bill said, the medi
cine was designed as “cheap negro medi
cine for the negroes of the Mississippi Val
ley.” And Zellln’s manager testified in the
case, and Zellln’s advertisements said “that
all the Liver Medicine they make is made by
the same formula." What more conclusive
evidence could there be that all their Liver
Medicine is “cheap negro medicine?"
Again, the United States Court, in the
Zeilln'case at Knoxville, Tenn , enjoined the
old proprietors of the article now called
“Black Draught” from perpetrating fraud
by using the words constituting our trade
name, and “Black Draught” was not known
till after 1878) yet they falsely advertise that
it was established in 1840, and filch our trade
by allowing their customers to untruthfully
represent it as the same as our genuine arti
cle, they giving color of truth to the de
ception by publishing the picture of a Dr.
Simmons on their wrapper, thereby asso
ciating their article with our Dr. M. A. Sim
mons’ Liver Medicine, which he established
in 1840, and every package of which has
borne bls picture since 1800.
