Floyd Has rlenty of Chert
It is a fact not generally known that
there is an abundance of chert in this
county. South of Rome about ten miles,
near Caldwell station on the Chattanooga,
Rome and Columbus railroad there is a
very large deposit of this valuable pav
ing material. It is a little difficult to get
a% but a road could easily be built to it,
thus opening up one of the best paying
beds in this section.

Os surpassing himself. Mr. Hawkinn has
many admirers in this city, and those

Only True Remedy For Warts.
A miserable imposter struck town the
other day, says the Dalton Citizen, and
went from house to house selling salve
which he guarantees to cure warts.
Now this is absurd, for all sensible peo
ple know that the only way to remove
a wart is to rub it with half a potato,
which is afterward to be buried by a
cross-eyed negro in the northwest cor
ner of a graveyard at midnight daring
the dark of the moon. As the potato
decays the wart will disappear. You
can’t work any snap on the Dalton peo
ple.

Commissioner Seagle Nov In Geirgla
Looking For Location Fish Hatchery.
HE WILL BE HERE IN A SHORT WHILE
He is Now in Macon, and Will Make That
City Hia Headquarter* While
Touring the State.
Mr. G. A. Seagle, representing the
United States fish commissioner, was
in Macon yesterday, says The Tele
graph. He spent the day here and
hoped that some of the county or
city officials woultj present to him
Macon’s or Bibb county’s claims to
the fish hatchery which the govern
ment will soon establish in Georgia,
Mr. Seagle left last night for Merri
wether county, where he- will meas
ure and examine the Cold Springs of
that county, which are about one
mile ftom the celebrated Warm
Springs, or Bibb’s Montpelier springs,
either of which, it is thought, would
suit most admirably for the hatchery.
But he will return Saturday
and remain here for some
time. He will then leave for
Harris county, to examine some
springs about six miles from Hamil
ton, and then others at Shellman, in
Randolph county; then several
springs near Rome,. Ga., and one
above Atlanta on the Southern.
During his stay in Georgia Mr.
Seagle will make the Brown house at
Macon his headquarters, having all of
his mail addressed there, and it is
quite probable that he will be waited
upon by some of the live citizens of
this community, who will invite him
to examine Tuft’s, or Montpelier
Springs.
He says he has no preference in tee
matter, but after carefully measuring
the supply, obtaining the temperature
and noting the surroundings of the va
rious springs which be is invited to visit
in the state, he will make his report,
and from it the site for the hatchery
will be chosen. He says that a flow of
less than 750 gallons per minute would
be inadequate, and a thousand gallons
is preferable.
The springs which he has been asked
to visit in Meriwether county are said
to have a flow of two thousand gallons
per minute, and to have a temperature
of 63 degrees. If these representations
are true and all the surroundings are
suitable the Cold Spring will have a
s roug claim on the hatchery.
It is said that Macon’s central loca
tion would be very much in her favor if
the springs are available. The govern
ment requires that the water and about
five acres of land shall be donated, and
after this >s done there is no further
item of expense to the donors. Uncle
Sam does the rest.
A great many letters have been for
warded to the commissioner setting
forth tne claims of various sections of
the state, and Mr. Seagle will give them
all a fair showing.

The Insect Fest Has Not Made Its appearance
in Georgia Yet.
The article published in yesterday’s
Tribune in regard to the San Jose Scale,
was slightly in error.
The peach tree limbs on exhibit at
Veal’s were brought from Virginia by
Prof. Alwood and exhibited et the State
horticultural meeting. So far as can be
ascertained the insect has not yet made
its appearance in Georgia. At least not
in Floyd. But all interested in fruit cul
ture should go and examine the branches

•10 YEARS THE STANPARD,
SENATOR STEYE CLAY
Georgia’s Junior Member cf tbe United
Stites Senate tn Rome.
United States Senator Steve Clay was
5 n Rome yesterday.
He arrived at 11 o’clock vis Western
and Atlantic railroad 'from his home in
Marietta,- and went out to the barbecue
of the city and county officials. He,
also, took a brief drive over the city.
“I notice Rome is progressing very
rapidly,” said the senator. “I notice
more building and improvement than in
any city of its size I have seen in many
years. It certainly seems as if prosperity
has struck Rome, er possibly you keep it
on top all the time.”
The “on top” seemed to suggest a
glass of spring water, and after he drank,
a Tribune man asked him:
“What do you think of tbe business
outlook ?"
“Why, everything is improving. Our
big crops are tbe basis for prosperity.
The republican party and tbe Dingley
bill have had nothing whatever to d«-
with it.”
Senaator Clay was given a warm wel
come in Rome, and his many friend®
hope he will visit here oftener. He is
especially devoted to tbe welfare of the
seventh congressional district.
He left on the 4:35 trai® and protwiees
to make a longer stay the next time? he
visits Rome.

Telegraph.
The cause of the delay wa» » school)
house on the track somewhere beyondi
Columbus. This sounds strange., but it
is true, as everybody on the train will
testify. It seems that tbe county school'
board of tbe county where tbe school
house was located had gotten permis
sion from the railroad company to
move a large frame school house over
the track in transferring it from one'
site to another, with the understanding
that the work should be done at a time
when it would not interfere with the ■
running of trains. Accordingly the 1
work of moving the schoolhonee began!
and progressed finely until it was di- ’
rectly on tbe railroad traek, then as
bad luck would have it. something
gave way and down came the school
house on the track, completely block
ing it. Every possible effort to get the
house off the track before the train ar
rived was made, but without success,
so that when the train anived it could
not pass. After an hour and a half of
hard work the house was moved far
enough for the train to pass, but it took
nearly the whole county to do it.
