VETERAN’S REUNION
Fall Program For the Day 'ln Simmer,
viile Saturday Next.
HON. J. W. MADDOX TO MAKS ADDRESS
A Camp cf Son* of Vet>r*n® %Vill Be Organ*
ized—A La ge Number of ttomans
ill Ac end,
‘ As announced last week the meeting
of the Confederate Veterans will ba
held at Summerville next Saturday
at which time a camp of the Sons of
Veterans will be organized and such
other routine business transacted as
may come up before the meeting, says
the Summerville News.
It has been decided to hold the
meeting at the Wither’s spring, as it
is the most available point for such
a gathering. Cool shades and plenty
of water are neccessary adjuncts to a
picnic dinner and these conditions are
amptly provided for at the Withers
spring.
A basket dinner, or picnic, is
thought to be the best form of enter
tainment, and all who attend are re
quested to bring lunch baskets well
filled, each one taking care of his own
lunch, and asking such friends at
dinner as they may choose. This
course is thought to be best, as it will
be impossible within the limited time
allowed, to make other arrangements
for the large gathering that is ex
pected.
The following program, has been ar
ranged and will be followed as closely
as possible:
The Veterans will form in front of
tbo court house at 10 o’clock sharp and
will match to the Withers spring.
The Summerville Brass Band will
head the procession and will furnish
music on the march and during the
day.
After reaching the springs Com
mander J. S. Cleghorn will call-a meet
ing of the Veterans at once, and trans
act such business as may be on hand.
Immediately after this a Camp of the
Sous of Veterans will be organized. As
this will be a rpeoial feature of the day
it is hoped that all the young men who
are sons of Confederate Veterans wily
but present and join the organization,
After the organization of the camp
is completed the audience will be ad
dressed by Hon. J. W. Maddox who
in his eloquent way will revive the
glorious memories of the days that
tried men’s souls. Judge Maddox is
in splendid trim, and his hearers will
not be disappointed in his address.
Gen. Gordon and Senator Steve
Clay have both been invited, but no
reply has been received from either
up to the time the News goes to press.
In any event there wiil be speakers
enough to entertain those present.
Capt. K R. Foster, of Lyerly, W. J.
Jennings, of Menlo, John A. Jones,
ofKartab, G. B. Myers, of Trion, and
W. M. Rich, of Summerville, have
been appointed marshals of the day,
and it is expected that each one of
these these gentlemen will be pres
ent and assist in making the day a
pleasant one.
At 2:30 o’clock sharp a match game
of ball will be played by the Lyerly
and Summerville teams.
The game will be played near the
big spring in town, as good grounds
have obtained especially for this oc
casion.
At 4 o’clock in the afternoon bicycle
races will occur on Broad street in
Summerville, this being the most
available point for such sport. A
number of good wheelmen fi;om Trion
and other points are expected to take
part in the sport, and some good rec
ords are expected.

ONE OF-IWO WAYS.
The bladder was created for one pur
pose, namely, a receptacle for the urine,
and as such it is not liable to any form
of disease except by one of two ways.
•The first way is from imperfect action
of the kidneys. The second way is
from careless local treatment of other
diseases,
CHIEF CAUSE
Unhealthy urine from unhealthy kid
neys is the chief cause of bladder troubles.
So the womb, like the bladder, was creat
ed for one purpose, and if not doctored too
much is not liable to weakness or disease,
except in rare cases. It is situated back
of and very close to the bladder,
therefore any pain, disease or incon
venience manifested in the kidneys,
back, bladder or urinary passage is
often, by mistake, attributed to female
weakness or womb trouble of some
sort. The error is easily made and
may be as easily avoided. To find out
correctly, set your urine aside for
twenty-four hours; a sediment or set
tling indicates kidney orbladder trou
ble. The mild and the extraordinary
effect of Dr Kilmer’s Swamp-Root,
the great kidney, and bladder remedy
is soon realized. If you need a medi
cine you should have the best. At
druggists fifty cents and one dollar.
You may have a gamble bottle and
pamphlet, both sent free by mail.

Typewriter Specialist Known Here Arrested
In Nashville.
“Dr.” Leonard Lippman who came
to Rome two or thee times and did
work as a typewriter specialist is in
trouble in Nashville. He was a good
dresser, put up at the best hotel and
was “one of the boys. ” The Chatta
nooga Times tells of bis escapades as
follows:
‘ Leonard Lippman, who will be re
membered by the owners of typewrit
ers in Chattanooga, and who left this
city under a shadow, is in trouble. It
seems that he went to Nashville and
operated in the same lax and promis
’ cuous manner that he employed here
and after borrowing a great deal of
money, and, it is alleged, appropri
ating that to which the laws of the
land did not entitle him, he left be
tween twilight and dawn. Through
the efforts of Nashville officers Lipp
man was located and arrested in Sa
vannah, Ga. A detective from Nash
ville was dispatched for the prisoner
and obtained requisition papers at
Atlanta, but when the detective
reaehed Savannah he was confronted
with a writ of habeas corpus, sworn
out to keep Lippman from being
brought to Nashville. The trial on
the habeas corpus writ was set for
hearing yesterday in Savannah.
Lippman comes of a good family and
his escapades have been very humili
ating, to his relatives and -friends.
“My boy came borne from school
one day with his hand badly lacerat
ed and bleeding and suffering great
pain,” writes Mr. E. J. Schall, with
Meyer Bros.’ Drug Co., St. Louis, Mo.
‘‘l dressed the wound and applied
Chamberlain’s Pain Balm freely. All
pain eeased, and in a remarkably
short time it healed without leaving a
scar. For wounds, sprains, swellings
and rheumatism I know of no medi
cine or prescription equal to it. I con
sider it a household necessity.” The 25

HORSE MEAT FOR PARIS
(Ind Other Place.) Supplied In Large
Quantities by an Oregon. Cannery.
The gay Parisians are being supplied
with choice cuts of horse meat by an enter
prising American firm whose horse slaugh
tering establishment, located near Port
land, Or., is the most. extensive in the
world and tho first to be conducted on a
largo scale in this country. The horse?
come from the extensive ranges in Wash
ington and Oregon, where they are wort.i
much less than cattle. They are mostly
Indian ponies, or cayuses, and before be
. ing driven to tbeir doom are otrefully fat
tened on bunch grass.
The horse meat factory is dignified by
the name of the Linnton cannery. It is
situated in the village of Linnton, a quiet
pretty little town on the Willamette river,
seven miles below Portland. During the
first five weeks of the factory’s existence
more than 1,500 horses were slaughtered

and at present an order for 5,000 barrels
of horse meat.is being filled for a Paris
dealer. The firm expects to build up a
large business in that capital, and in
China and Japan as well. About 50 horses
can be dressed every day.
The cayuses are driven in herds to Linn
ton, where they are bought for about $2 25
a head. To the average man with inherit
ed sentiments of regard for all horses in
general this seems to be a most cruel busi
ness. but the people of Linnton have come
to regard it as a most commendable enter
prise, and many of them have learned to
like the tender roasts of horsemeat which
the packers, for the purpose of destroying
old prejudices, distribute freely to all the
surrounding farmers and villagers.
The business Is conducted on a most
economical basis, not a single portion of
the unfortunate cayuse being lost in the
operation. Only the.hams and the tender
loins, which aie regarded as the best meat,
are corned. These are put in barrels,
branded frankly “Horse Meat” and ship
ped across the continent and the ocean.
The barrels also bear the branded sign of
a horseshoe, which serves us an appropri
ate trademark The meat is a little darker
than that of good beef and shows little fat
The tails and manes are shipped off to
mattress factories. All that remains—
head, legs, hoofs and all, even the blood—
is saved. The refuse is boiled in big vats
and a good lubricating oil extracted. The
residue is pressed, dried and ground and
made into an excellent fertilizer. It is t>
sad tale which the prairie ponies meet, bm
they serve a useful purpose.
The proper way to build health is to
make the blood rich and pure by taking
Hood’s Sarsapaailla, the one true blood
purifier.
