Make The Most of Yourself
It is the duty of every man to make
the most of himself. Whatever his capa
cities may be, he is sure to find some
place where he can be useful to himself
and to others. But he cannot reach his
highest usefulness withou' good health
and he cannot have good health with
out pure blood. The blood circulates to
every organ and tissue and when it is
pure, rich and healthy it carries health
to the entire system, but if it is impure
it scatters disease wherever it flows.
Hood’s Sarsaparilla is the one true
blood purifier. It cures salt rheum,
scrofula, catairh,dyspepsia and rheu
matism because these diseases have
their origin in the blood.

The strength which comes to us from
eating nourishing food is better than
stimulation, because it is new strength.
The health which belongs to a strong
body, well nourished by proper food
1 properly digested), is the only health
that is lasting.
The difference between Shaker Diges
tive Cordial and other medicines is sim
ply that it helps nature to make strength.
It does not profess to cure sickness, ex
cept as that sickness is a result of weak
ness caused by food not properly diges
ted.
Shaker Disgestive Cordial will relieve
the pangs of indigestion, and make thin,
sick, weak people as well as if their
stomachs had never been out of order.
It id a gentle aid to the digestion of
nature’s strength-maker, food.

She Told The Inspector it Was Under Her

They tell it on a small-pox inspeoior
that he was going through the train and
encountered a dashing looking lady with
a verv breezy air:
“Beg pardon, Miss—but have you
been vaccinated?
“I have.”
“Have you a certificate?”
•‘No.”
“Can you show me where you have
been vaccinated - you know the law.”
“Well, you can’t see my vaccinate.”
“But, Miss, you must either show
me your vaccinate or a certificate or I’ll
be compelled to ”,
“It is no body’s business and besides it
is under my Honi sol qui mal y pense.”
The inspector found a friend who
wore glasses and assuming a confidential

“Say Judge, what is a honey sweet

When he explained the Judge grinned
and said—“garter.”

TRAGEDY NEAR COLUMBIA.
Two Men Killed In a Fight at 'Uy's Cross*
roads—A Cowardly Act.
Columbia, S. 0., Sept. 10. —News of
a tragedy at May’s Crossroads, Saluda
county, in which 'two lives were lost—
one of them an innocent brother, sacri
ficed to cowardice —and in which a mag
istrate’s pistol figuied, has been re
ceived here. H. G. Cogburn and Sump
ter Gilliam were the principals. The
origin of the trouble is not known, un
less it was the result of rumored long
pent up ill feeling between the partici -
pants.
“Q” Cogburn, as he is familiarly
called, and Gilliam, along with several
others, were at Burnett’s store and had
been drinking cider. Gilliam was in
his buggy preparing to leave and before
he knew it Cogburn ran upon him from
the rear and slashing at his throat
lunged his knife into Gilliam’s mouth,
cutting him across the face to the ear.
He then stabbed him in the shoulder
and reaching around plunged the blade
in his abdomen.
Gilliam, although in an almost help
less condition, staggered some distauce
to Magistrate O. L. Still, and getting
his pistol came back to Cogburn and
was in the act of firing when “Q”
jumped behind his brother, Julian Gil
liam, who received tne fatal bullet full
iu his abdomen.
“Q” escaped unhurt, but his brother
and Gilliam are said to be in a hopeless
condition. Gilliam was constable for
Magistrate Still.

REPORT WAS FALSE
Ruiwd In Chattanooga That There Was"
Yellow Fever on Lookout.
HO GROUNDS FOR IT WHATEVER
• - ■'
That City is Maintaining Strict Inspection of
Ail Incoming Trains No
Apprehension Felt.
Considerable excitement was pro
duced in Chattanooga yesterday by a
rumor that a case of yellow fever bad
developed on Lookout mountain. The
Chattanooga Times made a thorough
investigation and found that the rumor
is groundless and the report only empha
sizes the fact that the people are prono
to magnify possibilities of danger when
their fears are excited. The facts are
these: Several weeks ago Dr. Bragg,
who resides in Southern Mississippi, was
taken down with an illness which he
thought to be dengue fever. He recovered
from the disease, with his w.fe and
child, came to Lookout mountain eight
days ago, and is now stopping at a cot
tage on the mountain to recuperate his
strength. The most dangerous malady
with which be is afflicted is a painful
boil. The county physician. Dr. T. E.
Abernathy, had the eftse investigated
thoroughly and found the facts to exist
substantially as stated, with no evi
dence or suspicion of yellow fever,
Inspectation of Trains.
It is the opinion of local physicians
generally that there is no shadow of
probability of the disease reaching
this city. In fact, some of the best
informed medical men of the city are
of the opinion that the disease exist
ing at Ocean Springs and that vicinity
is not yellow fever. They argue that
it would be impossible for genuine
yellow fever to exist with so small a
death rate. Out of six or seven hun
dred cases only about ten deaths
have occurred. The history of epide
mics of the genuine yellow fever
shows that the death rate is from 25
to 50 per cent, of those afflicted.
However remote the probability of
the disease, whatever it is, reaching
this city, the bars are not down for
its free entrance. Dr, G. M. Hunt, as
sisted by Dr. R. H. Tatum, acting un
der orders from Dr. Lindsley, of the
state board of health, is rigidly in
specting every passenger train enter
ing the city over the Alabama Great
Southern and Memphis and Charles-
I ton railroads. Nobody from the in
i fected districts will be permitted to
stop in the city.
! It is a matter of congratulation
I that Chattanooga may rejoice in the
, prospect of absolute immunity from
i the disease now prevalent along the
> Mississippi coast, whatever iv is.
