Hazleton, Pr., Sept 13.—The situa
tion here is ominous. AU the indica
tions point to danger and the troops
have been so assigned as to cover every
territory where there is prospect of ac
tion. however remote. During the en
tire night the streets in front and the
rear of brigade headquarters at Valley
hotel were guarded by sentries and no
person was permitted to pass the lines
under uwy pretext.
The first official action of the day was
to close all liquor saloons until 4p. m.
This was done after a conference be
tween Mayor Altiniller and General
Gobm The mayor has been laid up
with rheumatism, but the developments
of the past 24 hours induced him to
hobble to his office for the first time
since the rioting began. Brigade Com
mander Cobin consulted him by mes
senger and the liquor embargo was soon
afterwards declared. Tins was done be
cause of the fear of whut might follow
if the strikers hud access to liquor when
so wrought up with grief ana rage.
When morning broke many of the
militiamen began to make preparations
to leave their commands for the usual
promenade througn the city. General
Gobin, hoi ver, in the meantime had
issued tun ~er orders that all passes
were discontinued for the present and
that no one could leave camp. The
commanders of the regiments at all
points in and about the city were given
orders to hold their commands in readi
ness for any call at Latimer. A very
ugly feelin. was prevailing among the
miners and rumors of disturbances
reached the city, but could not be
verified. • .

Chicago. Sept. 13.—Meetings of the
various branches of the newly organized
Social Democracy were held to discuss
the recent Hazleton, Pa., tragedy, and
some decidedly lurid language was in
dulged in by the speakers. Resolutions
Were passed by Branch No. 2, which
zoutuined the following:
"The blood of an idle and useless aris
tocracy is the most convenient medium
for nourishing the tree of liberty. ‘An
eve for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
For every miner killed and wounded
a millionaire should be treated in the
same manner. The millionaire class is
responsible for the s aughter of Sept. 10
and we regard the torch as the most
successful weapon to wield against
them. ”
-Fitzgerald Murphy, • president of
braucn No. 2, made a speech in whioil
he said:
"The miners should carry arms and
use them. r.oo. The time has come to
meet force with force I should have
told them to shoot to kill. 1 would kill
20 millionaires today.”
Strong condemnatory resolutions were
also passed by branch No. 1 and some
fier e speeches made. T. P. Quinn said:
"1 will not carry a musket, I wi l
carry a torch and a knife and I will
carry both as far as I can.”
Leroy M. Goodwin, E. V. Debs’right
hand man and a director of the national -
board of the Social Democracy, in the
course of a speech said:
"I would attack property with the
torch; I would destroy their fioe palaces.
Let us rebel when men are shot down as
they were in Pennsylvania.”
Several indignation meetings were
held in the Polish quarter, and resolu
tions passed condemning the shooting
of the Hazleton miners and appealing to
the United States government for pro
tection.
