JUDGE ATKINSON,
Os the Georgia iSuprems Court Pays a Com
pllmtnt to Chattanooga.
Judge Spencer R. Atkinson of the
supreme court bench of Georgia, end
one of Georgia’s most prominent and
influential citizens, was in the city
yesterday says the Chattanooga Times.
Judge Atkinson was en route to Tate
Spring, Tenn., to spend a few days
prior to the meeting of the supreme
court in a few days.
During the past few months Judge
Atkinson has paid considerable at
tention to the Georgia convict system
which is now being thoroughly inves
tigated.
He said: “I doubt whether a bet
ter system can be decided upon. You
know a penitentiary is a penitentiary,
and I doubt whether things are as
bad as represented. However, the
legislature will be confrontoed with
the problem and will undertake the
rigbt plan to get out of the present
difficulty. I have very serious doubts
as to whether a better substitute can
be gotten up.”
Speaking of politics, the judge said:
’’This is Georgia’s off year for poli
tics. When politics is on in Georgia,
everything is warm; things are cooled
down, now.
Judge Atkinson paid a tribute to
Chattanooga,and said something con
cerning the Georgia line, which is in
dispute.
“I will be half tempted to move to
Chattanooga when it is acquired by
Georgia, but I think my change ‘ of
residence will be postponed some
timfe. Just think, if we "had Chat
tanooga and Lookout mountain at
one end of the state, and Cumberland
and St. Simon's at the other! We
could offer all kinds of attractions.
But then, what would Tennessee do
without Chattanooga? Chattanooga
is one of Tennessee’s best cities and
the state could net afford to lose it.”
The '‘Bicyclist’s Best Friend” is a
familiar name for DeWitt’s Witch
Hazel Salve, always ready for emer
gencies. While a specific for piles, it
also instantly relieves and cures outs,
bruises, salt rheum, eczema and all af
fections of the skin. It never fails.

The Trust Drops One of Its Brands to the
Old Price.
Information has been received by
Rome Jobbers that cigarettes made by
the American tobacco trust have been
reduced to the price which prevailed
before the tariff legislation increased
the tax upon them.
For a time it appeared as if the
“fiend,” who finds such solace and
pleasure in bis cigarette, would have
to assist the big trust in bearing the
burden of this increased tax by pay
ing the retailers 7 instead of 5 cents
for a package. But such will not be
the case. The price went up, that is,
in so far as the cost to the retailer and
jobbers was concerned, but it had not
been raised to the consumer, except
wjth a few retailers, who were un
willing to s6ll the cigarettes of the
trust for 5 cents a package, the mar
gin being less than they were willing
to accept.;
The jump in price was from $3 65 to
$3.95 per thousand. Even at the for
mer price, the retailer only made a
profit of $1.32, and when the raise in
price came, his margin was cut down
to $1.05, which scarcely justified him
in baniling them.
The other brands manufactured by
the trust, or the American Tobacco
Company, were raised in price from
$1 65 to $2 per thousand.
“These prices might possibly have
been in force yet, ” said one of Rome’s
leading jobbers to a Tribune reporter,
‘‘if it had not been for the fact that
the trust’s brands of cigarettes were
about to be supplanted by brands
manufactured by their competitors.
We received notice from the trust
Monday, reducing the price, so that
now all the jobbers are selling them
at the old price. $3.65 per thousand.
The price of the cheap ■ brand, how
ever, is to remain $2 per thousand.
