SENTRIES SEE SPOOK
Foot Guards at London Tower Badly
Pifeh’eotd.
THEY CAUSE CONSIDERABLE TALK
Swear the Ghost of the Unfortunate Queen
Anna Boleyn Visit* Them —Duke *ud
Duchess of Oosta Disagree.
London, Sept. 20. —In spite of official
frowns and attempts to' suppress tlio
chatter, it has leaked out that the de
tachment of foot guards quartered at
the tower of Loudon swear the sen
tries on night duty have seen the ghost
of Anne Boleyn, the unfortunate wife
of the much married King Henry VIII.
Whom he caused to be beheaded on May
19, 1536. The ghost of Queen Anne
Boieyn is only supposed to appear on
the eve of the death of a member of the
royal family, and therefore the matter
' has been made the occasion for consid
erable gossip.
The Marquis de Luville, it is an
nounced, has gone.to Paris with the ob
ject of challenging all the detractors of
Prince Henry of Orleans so long as the
prince is unable to wield a sword in his
own defense.
The king of Siam has returned to
Taplow court from France, and will re
main there until Oct. 1.
The Prince and Princess of Wales
have announced their intention of pay
ing several visits to London in order to
encourage the winter season, the trades
men of the metropolis having succeeded
in conveying respectful hints to his
royal highness that otherwise the sea
son was certain of failure, which would
be followed by a consequent depression
in trade, owing to the social reaction
which set in after the celebration of the
queen’s diamond jubilee.
KoyaUy’s Relations Knptureil.
The relations between the Duke and
Duchess of Aosta, the former being the
oldest nephew of the king of Italy and
the latter being Princess Helena of
Orange, daughter of the late Count of
Paris, are once more reported to be
Strained, and it is further stated that
their separation is only a question of a
short time.
Although they were only married a
few years ago, in June, 1895, in June,
1896, The Figaro announced that the
marriage had turned out tq be very un
happy for both parties and that a ju
dicial separatim was only prevented by
the intervention of the Dqke of Aumale.
XJIP duchess, The Figaro added, is said
to be unreconciled to her husband and
kept separate apartments. In Decem
ber of the same year there was. held a
family council of the members of the
houses of Savoy and Orleans, at the end
of which it was announced the Duke
and Duchess of Aosta had been induced
to abandon tbelr intention of an imme
diate separation.
But, when the duchess was here last
WSea, she declared she would never live
in Italy again. Her mother, the Conn
less of Paris, has done all she can tc
soothe the ruffled feelings of the du h
ess, but all her efforts to make bei
change her mind seem to have been u:i
availing and it is generally admitted
that her separation from the duke i.-
again looked upon as being most inevi
table.
Insanity Is Increasing.
The report of the asylums committee
of Loudon county council shows there
lias been an alarming increase in lutia W
during the last nine years, especially in
London.
A curious suggestion has been made
with the object of emphasizing the
union of the British empire, and is
meeting with considerable favor. The
idea is that in place of such distinctive
names, Canada, Australia, etc., the
designation of the British empire should
be applied to ail the countries under
British rule. Under this plan Great
Britain proper would be known as the
British empire, central; Canada would
be known as British empire, northwest,
etc., etc.
Tne appalling number of cycling acci
dents is leading to demands for legisla
tion to abate the public ganger. There
footsteps. No man can
stand the strain of. modern business com
petition who wilfully neglects his health.
It is not good policy to overwork, but the
man who looks after his health Can stand a
great deal of it. The man who neglects his
health is soon unfitted for work. When a
man’s digestion is disordered and his bow
els are irregular, his blood becomes impure
and the body is badly nourished. The vic
tim of these conditions suffers from brain
fag, nervous prostration, and debility, and
eventually falls a victim to consumption.
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery
corrects the digestion, invigorates the liver,
improves the appetite and regulates the
bowels. It is the best blood-punfier, blood
maker, flesh-builder, and nerve tonic. It
makes a man well, strong, Clear-headed and
fit for business. It enables him to stand a
reasonable amount of overwork. All good
druggists sell it. There’s nothing “just
ns good.” (
Chas.Faulhaber, ofßrownlee, Cherry Co., Neb.
writes: “ I have used Dr. Pierce’s medicines,
especially the ‘ Golden Medical Discovery ’ with
much benefit. Some time ago I was troubled
with great distress in my arms and hands. It
got so bad I could not sleep at night. I thought
it was the muscles of my arms that caused the
trouble. I began taking the ‘ Golden Medical
Discovery.’ Soon I felt a decided improvement,
and before I had taken the second bottle the
aching was all gone, and it has not returned. I
have a copy of your ' Common Sense Medical Ad
viser’ aud would not do without it for any
money.”
Knowing howto take care of health is half the
battle against illness. Dr. Pierce's great book,
•‘Common Sense Medical Adviser” is the educa
tor of the age. This book reached a sate of
680,000 copies at ft.so each. Within its 1,008 pages
is compressed the best that Dr. Pierce has gath
ered by study and practice in thirty years. It
is illustrated with over 300 drawings, some of
them colored. Its 90 pages addressed exclusively
to women are worth the original price of the
book. A new edition in paper covers is now
ready for free distribution. By sending 31 cents
in one-cent stamps, to pay for mailing, you will

A YOUNG WIFE ABDUCTED.
Missouri Wotuan Carried Away and, It
Is Believed, Murde ed.
Warrensburg, Ma, Sept. 20.—Six
days have elapsed since the young wife
of Andrew Still was abducted by three
drunken farmer boys, Hull, McGee and
Jackson, yet no trace of her can be
found. Feeling is still running high in
Jefferson township, where the outrage
was committed, and the conviction has
become settled that murder has been
added to abduction and assault.
The missing woman has not returned
to Warsaw, which disproves the story of
young Hull that she was placed on the
train at Leeton and-sent to that place.
All concerned are now* under arrest,
but they stoutly deny any knowledge
of the whereabouts of their victim.
From present indications the anger of
the people of Jefferson township will
burst restraint if the woman is not soon
found.

Columbia. S. 0., Sept. 20 —At Dil
lon, Darlington oouuty, there was great
excitement and nearly a riot between
citizens aud the Harris Nickelplated
show people. The citizens contend that
they were swindled aud duped; that
the “best people” went to the show be
cause it advertised “no games of
chance.”
When they got there gambling tables
were going aiiti titeyweut in to win aud
lose. Then the circus people offered to
make change, which was scarce, and in
every instance this “take out” was
from $1 to sl4. Many of the coAflding
people put it in their pockets without
counting.
When the circus train was ready to
move 250 men with drawn pistols
swarmed around and on the engine,
holding It down. The circus men, aleb
armed, were prepared to fight, but the
orpos ng force was too strong aud a
proposition to settle was made.
At last accounts the train was still
being held aud restitution being made,
one by one, to victims.
