Batter.
There is nothing that annoys the
husband or wife more than the find
ing of butler on the table that is
noGß>veet and nice. Besides having
cmtracts with some of the finest
dairies for the best Jersey butter,
we are handling the very finest
Creamery Butter we can buy.
Coffee,
An evidence of the fact that the
coffee of some of Rome’s grocers is
not what it should be, is the pur
chase of our Quality and Quantity
coffee this week by all families in
Rome, whose coffee trade we have
worked for, without success, for a
long time. To one part) we sold
one can containing three pounds as
a sample and three days later he
brought an trder from his little
town- for 8 cans, or 24 lbs. The
price is $1 00 for a 3 lb can, which
contains the best MocLa and Java
that grows. No chance for it to
lose any of its strength oi aroma
when you can get it in a sealed can.
If that is too high for your purse,
then call for Pavoma coffea put up
in pound packages and a silver
plated spoon for 12 cents. We
guarantee this coffee to be superior
to any package goods on this mar
ket, and you would do well to buy
a supply while the roasters are
offering such a great inducement to
get it introduced here. If we do
not give you better value for your
money when you get coffee from us
than you can get anywhere, we will
make no charge for the goods.
Yeast.
We are agents for Fleischmann’s

Massachusetts Mill Shipped 900,000

ALL OF IT GOES TO FOREIGN PORTS
The Celebrated Bachelors Club Besotntea
Bomn—Several People Sick- Personal
and General Item* of Interest.
The Massachusetts Mills have shipped
to foreign ports this week 900,000 yards
of cloth. This is a splendid weeks work,
and owing to the superior quality of the
goods made here it gives ready demand
at all times.
Since McKinley was elected prosperity
has been coming southward. It has at
last reached Lindale. You can see it in
every home. One of our best young
men was boycotted by the girls, and a
few days ago he purchased a pair of new
pants and the boycott has been raised
and every body and the chilaien are
happy.
The ‘‘No Name” Literary Society held
a very pleasant meeting at the residence
of Hon. G. B. Holder. A splendid pro
gram was rendered and everyone present
had a nice time and all enjoyed the hos
pitalities of the evening. The next meet
ing will be held at the residence of Dr.
J. N. Cheney at Silver Creek.
Mr. Roberts, who was hurt by a switch
engine in Rome, is reported in a very
critical condition. Mr. Roberts moved
from Sand Mountain to this place and is
liked by all who know him.
The Bachelor’s Club met at 8 o’clock
at mechanics hall. Minutes of last meet
ing approved. The following committee
was appointed for the banquet at next
meeting: G. M. Sullivan, W. D. Ach
ord and M. E. Dodd.
The following resolutions were adopt
ed : That we deeply regret the resigna
tion of our president, W. J. Neilson, as
we know that he will always be a bach
elor, as he was never known to smile at
one of the fair sex.
2nd, That our secretary be requested
to leave a blank page in the book to al
ways remind us of what he done for us
while a member of the club. After re
freshments of crackers and water and
one package of cigarettes the club ad
journed.
Mr. W. J. Neilson has resigned his
position as master mechanic of the mill
and will stay in Rome for a short and
much needed fest before leaving for
home.
If you want to find out where the “No
Name” Literary Society met last week,
ask Bob Paris. Bob was on the pro
gram and is trying to get an excuse for
not paying a fine of ten cents.
Profs. Shiflet and Holder, with his
numerous family, Jim Porter and h's
best girl, Dave Bummers and his partner
(if she will go) will attend the all day
singing at Fellowship church Sunday.
Mr. W. D. Achord will be accompanied
by his “best wheel.”
Profs. Mcßreyer and Morris have
opened a singing school at the church.
They are both fine singers and the music
loving people should give them a liberal
support.
Mr. Howard Alexander is confined to
his room with fever, and it has iot yet
developed whether it is typhoid fever or
not. We hope he will be out in a short
while.
Prof, Shiflet has a flourishing school
numbering 100 scholars. The house is
not large enough to accommodate the
children, and a great many will have to
be turned away. The county ought to
build a lajge school house at this place
that would seat 200 pupils. What says
the county board of education?

People who fail to look after their
health are like the carpenter who neg

apt to get anxious about their health
soon enough. If you are “not quite
well’’ dr “half sick” have you ever
thought that your kidneys may be the
cause of your sickhess?
It is easy to tell by setting aside your
urine for twentv-four hours; a sediment
or settling indicates an unhealthy condi
tion of the kidneys. When urine stains
linen it is evidence of kidney trouble.
Too frequent desire to urinate, scanty
supply, pain or dull ache in the back is
also Convincing proof that the kidneys
and bladder are out of order.
There is satisfaction in knowing that
the great remedy Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-

weak or diseased kidneys and all forms

only does Swamp-Root give new life

SOUTHERN COMPLAIN?,
Increase In Taxes Does Not Please the
Big Road.
Knoxville, Sept. 25.- Second Vice-
President W. W. Finley, of the South
ern railway, was in the city Friday. He
stated that he had been to Nashville for
the purpose of consulting with the state
authorities, relative to the taxation of
the Southern property iu this state for
the present year. It is much higher
than it was last year, and the purpose
of the visit of the official was to induce
the authorities to reduce this tax. The
only alternative for the company, how
ever, is to silo its exceptions to the taxa
tion of its property. This will be done
within the next ten days, and it is be
lieved by Mr. Finley that the desired
end of his trip to Nashville will then be
accomplished.

Fire partially burned' and totally
ruined the bakery department in the
rear-of Mr. Henry Stoffregen’s store
yesterday morning at 4:3fio'clock.
Policeman Fred King in his rounds
saw flumes spurting from the top of
the frame building, and turned in the
alarm.
Baker Newt Jones was at work in
the building. He had just taken out
some loaves, and placed a fresh batch
in the oven. He stepped into other
part of the building, and when he
came.back heard some yell fire.
He raised a window and policeman
King said:
"Get out of there Newt. The whole
top of the thing’s falling in.’’
Not until then did Baker Jones
realize that the building was burning
over his head. When the fire depart
ment arrived the blaze had almost
ruined the bakery. The water neces
sary to extinguish the fire completed
the ruin.
The fire caught from the big brick
oven to the wood work above.
Mr. Stoffregen estimates his loss at
SI,OOO 500 loaves, and a large quantity
of flour was ruined, besides the build
ing and ovens. He had no insurance.
£He will replace ths burned build
ing with a brick structure and the
latest and best ovens.

The weather continues clear, no rain
having fallen in this section for quite a
month. During the past few days the
-temperature has fallen and at times it
has been quite cool, particularly the
nights, when fires heve been necessary
to comfort. It turned quite warm again,
yesterday and the indications are that
the cool spell is temporarily over.
The country is standing badly in
need of rain, many wells going dry,
but rainfall at this juncture would be
of no benefit to the plant, as the recent
rust and excessively hot and dry weath
er has resulted in the practical loss
of top crop. Rainfall would be of in
jury on account of so much cotton
now being open in the field, and would
cause deterioration in quality.
Prices continue at low ebb, the basis
for street sales being six cents. Far
