FOR CO-EDUCATION
Capr. John H. Reece Heartily Favors Ad
mitting Girls to College.
LAW SAYSCIN ENTER ALL BRANCHES
Os the State University Except Two—Caps.
Reece Backs up His Position
With Strong Argument,
The subject of co-education just now
is a subject of discussion all over the
state.’ Many arguments for and against
have'been advanced by some of the best
thinkers of both sexes in the country.
Capt. John H. Reece, representative
from this county to the legislature, is
heartily in favor of admitting girls to the
state university. He has already ex
pressed himself on this line very strongly.
Capt. Reece’s view cannot fail to carry
weight, because he is a man of conserv# -
tive and mature judgment, and never
expresses his opinions until he has
thoroughly deliberated the subject at
issue. It may be stated here that he is
one of the most popular men with all
classes in the county, and has never laid
his claims before the people for a public
office that he has not secured. He was
seen by a Tribune representative yester -
day, and consented to talk on the subject
of co-education.
•‘There are nine branches of the State
University, and it is a fact not generally
known that women are admitted to all
of them exbect two. The exceptions
are the Technological school and the
Georgia State Industrial College for
colored youths at Savannah. The last
code of the state, recently published, vol
1, section 1301, reads:
“All the braneh colleges of the State
University of Georgia, now or hereafter
established, except the last two men
tioned in the preceding section, shall be
open to all white female students of pro
per age aqd qualifications, with equal
rights and privileges as those exercised
and enjoyed by the male students of such
institutions, under such rules and regu
lations as may be prescribed by the sev
eral boards of trustees of said institu
tions.”
“This law is not generally known,”
continued Capt. Reece, “but you see it is
there all right. Now if we admit girls
into the law and medical schools, where
in does the harm or danger lie in per
mitting them to secure a literary educa
tion in the same institution as the boys?
If there is any sensible reason I fail to
see it. Besides, inasmuch as the
branches are a part of the whole system
of university work in Georgia, why can’t
they go jto the university proper at
Athens?
“Women pay taxes just as the men,
and why should they be debarred from
its benefits? lam in favor of admitting
girls into all the schools except mihltary
institutions. While I admire Joan of
Arc as much as any one, nevertheless I do
not think it is a woman’s prerogatiye to
entter into the heat and strife of battle,
only as the ministering angel to the sick
and wounded.
“It refines and enables the young men
to be associated with sweet, pure girls,
and brings out all the chivalrous and
better qualities of his nature. That is
my position and it is unalterable.”

B ACK FROM ATLANTA
Special Committee Sent Down to Inves
tigate Yellow Fever Sima ion.
FOUND ONLY ONE CASE DOWN THERE
The Gate City le Not at All Alarmed--Charges
Made For Health Certificates Waa
Done under MisHpprebeusion*
Mayor S. S. King, City Clerk Hal
sted Smith, Coucilmen Thompson
Hiles, R. A. Denny and ’ Dr. Lindsay
Johnson returned from Atlanta last
night at 8:35.
They went down to investigate the
situation there as regards the yellow
fever and to see whether it would be
advisable for Rome to quarantine.
They made the trip down over the
Southern and returned via the Wes
tern and Atlantic.
They were met by Dr. Alexander,
the city physician, who gave them all
the desired assistance and information
in securing tbe true state of affairs in
that city. Atlanta is kept as clean as
a pin, and the sewers are flushed with
thousands upon thousands of gallons
of water per day. The trains are
watched closely, and all people from
infested districts questioned and re
quired to show clean health certifi
cates. There is only one case of yel
low fever there and it is of a very mild
type. The house is rigidly quarantin
ed.
The members of the committee feel
thatfthere is not tbe slightest danger
of the disease spreading in that city,
and that no alarm whatever need be
felt here.
No official action of any kind will
be taken until the council meeting
Monday evening, and at that time the
committee will make its report. They
are inclined towards advising against
a quarantine, unless the people de
mand it, or for the sake of protecting
the business interests of the city.
The story appearing in the Journal last
night to the effect that sll health certifi
cates were charged for here, is partially
misleading.
The city physician laboring under a
misapprehension had charged a few peo
ple for certificates, but the matter was
brought before the city officials - Friday
night and an order was at once issued
that no more health certificates, under
any circumstances, should be charged
for. The salary of the city physician
covers all such things.
Mayor King had the misfortune to get
a cindef in his eye on the return trip,
and was suffering intensely with it when
he arrived. He called on a physician
and had the particle removed.
