DISINFECT FREIGHT

SOLUTION OF BICHLORIDE IS USED

Comers— A late inaa n» Beprreeutative
in Atlanta.to Watch States Interest
The railroads did n6t get their shower
bath disinfecting plants in complete
working order yesterday, bat the bi
chloride of mercury will fly today says
the Constitution.
The Southern is doing its fumigating
in its yards. The Atlanta and West
Point has fixed np a device at West End.
Each oar will be run under a tank
holding 2,000 gallons of water contain
ing the bichloride in solution. One man
will handle a hose and sprinkle the top,
aides and bottom of every car inside and
out. After the disinfectant has had time
to kill all the germs, a stream of water
will be turned on the car and it will be
washed out. This will be done to pre
vent the poison from injuring the car
or anything loaded into it subsequently.
The fumigation can be done efficiently
in a few minutes. The West Point needs
its freight equipment. Since Alabama
quarantined against Atlanta no oars
which have been in Atlanta within ten
days have been allowed to cross the
line. The fumigation will be done under
the eyes of a representative of Alabama’s
board who will placard each oar disin
fected.
With the Southern it has not made so
much difference, because orders for coal
have been given to Tennessee instead
of to Birmingham- The Southern can
send its cars which have been in At
ianta up into Tennessee just as freely as
ever. Tennessee has no fever panic. Ten
nessee's coal and iron companies are
getting a great deal of business from all
this section which formerly went to
Alabama.
Graysville, which quarantined on
Monday against Atlanta, is the last sta
tion in Georgia on the Western and At
lantic. The settlement will not allow
any passenger or any freight from At
lanta to stop there. Not one person in
ten could tell yesterday where Grays
ville was.
Texarkana quarantined yesterday
against all the outside world. A railroad
man who knows the town said that he
could well understand why the people
are panic stricken. “If fever does get in
that town, the chances are that Tex
arkana would be depopulated. It would
be a m'irk for disease and its citizens
know it.”
In refusing to let any person pass
through, Texarkana bottles up Texas
from the northeast. Shrevesport was
closed, but it was possible for Texans to
get in from this side through Memphis
and Texarkana. The next gateway into
Texas on the west of Texarkana is Paris.
There are some Texans in Atlanta who
want to go home, but they will have to
take a long journey round to get home,
enless they wait until the quarantine is
lifted.
The belief grows stronger every day
among the railway officials here that the
quarantine against Atlanta will be
raised before long. This city’s immunity
frbm the disease, although hundreds of
refugees have been here, is said to be
gradually impressing itself on the health
athorities of Alabama. In addition to
this, some of the towns over there
which have been bottled up are kicking
vigorously. Their merchants are arguing
that if fever does break out among At
lantians there is no danger from freight
with which refugees do not come in
contact.
One of Atlanta’s handsome ticket
agents was importuned yesterday by
an Alabama lady to aid her in getting
back to her home. She has been off at a
summer resort for four months and
wants to return to her husband. She
said that she would love the ticket agent
like a brother if he would only arrange
some scheme by which she could get a
health certificate that would enable her
to cross the state line. As she was a
matron of more than nsual charms, the
agent was anxious to assist her, but he
had to tell her that there was no way
for her to break through the rigid quar
antine.
