TEAS. .
Tetley's Stands at the Head of
the Column,
Why is it that Tet.le\’j teas are
the bent? is asked by many. Tiui'e
are various reasons, both convincing
and unanswerable to any intelligent
thinker? Tetley is among fields
ot the greatest tea country in the
world for high grade teas. He his
made the tea industry a study and
selects only the very test goods for
his trade. His teas are rich, fragrant
and mellow, and from it you will not
get any of the poisonous effects so
common ia the low grade teas, it is
handled but once with the hands, i
that in the picking, the balance is'
done with machinery, It is packed
in halt pound packages and sells at
25, 35 and 50 cents the package for
the Oolong, Ceylon or the mixed.
As a proof of our statement above
we ask that you try a cup of it. It j
is being served by Mrs. A,C. Heggie
on the second floor at the store of
Bass Bros. & Co , where she will be I
until Saturday ut 9 p, m If you
ask your grocer for Tetley’s tea and j
he reports none in stock “but c»n
supply you with some just as good,” ;
we would have you to remember that'
the string of self-interest answers
with its chords to every sound. It
vibrates with the funeral bell, and
the song of a grocer who desires to
sell a cheap tea for a large profit is
considering the interest of his purse
and not the good of your stomach. ■
If he desires to give youthebtst, be
can quickly get Tetley’s teas from I
us as cheap' as he can buy them
anywhere in the United States, We .
are their wholesale agents for Rome. |

HERE’S NEWS INDEED
Atlanta Commercial Says Hoke Smith
Owns Stuck in the Constitution.
HE POSSESSES JUST FIFTY SHARES
W. A Hemphill aid HoKi Smith Owfi the
Controliug Interest in th<s Atlanta
Constitution.
Hoke 'Smith owns fifty shares of
the stock of the Atlanta Constitution
Publishing company.
This is the rumor that comes to the
Atlanta Commercial from a reliable
source today.
Mr. Smith, the president of a rival
' paper, owns as much stock as Mr.
Clark Howell, the editor of the Con
stitution.
Ever since Captain Evan P. Howell
retired from the paper there have
been many rumors as to why he left.
The vommeroial is able to give to
day the'exact reason of his sudden
retirement.
When the Constitution lost its news
franchise through the col.apse of the
■ Southern Associated Press, the Asso
ciated Press,through Mr. Hoke Smith,
; but such exacting conditions on the
' Constitution that Captain Howell,
would not comply and became very
exasperated and in that frame of mind
said he’d sell before he would be dic
tated to by Hoke Smith.
Mr. Hugh T. Inman, to whom the
eaptain was talking, asked him how
| much he would take for his stock —250
, shares.
He replied that he would sell for S4OO
per share, making his entire holding
. amount to SIOO,OOO.
Mr. Inman asked how long would
[he keep that option open, and Capt.
I Howell said “one week'” Papers
were drawn up to that effect.
1 Mr. Banigan, the Providence mil
-1 lionaire, who went in with Mr. Will
Austell in erecting the Austell build-
• ing, was here at the time.
‘ Mr. Inman approached him with
the option, and Mr. Banigan, having
' accumulated about $10,000,000 in the
rubber trust, said he would loansloo-,
000 on the stock at 6 per cent interest.
The stock pays 13 per cent.
Mr. Inman reported the result of his
investigation to Mr. W- A. Hemphill,
the business manager of the Constitu
tion.
Mr. Hemphill decided to take 200
shares of Capt. Howell’s stock and Mr.
Hoke Smith, the president of the Jour
l nal Publishing Company, concluded
to take the other 50.
The whole was paid for by Banigan’s
money. The other main stockholders
as far as ascertained, are Messrs. Hugh
and Sam Inman and James Swann.
Messrs. W. A. Hemphill and Hoke
Smith now own the controlling inter
est in the paper and it is suspected
that the present free silver policy is
being adhered to for the reason that
i it would be a bad business venture to
change the policy too suddenly.
It is also thought by some' that the
Constitution will not be a free silver
paper in 1900 and that the change
from its present policy may be pre
cipitated before that time.
The suggestive query is already go
ing the rounds: “Isn’t it a question
of time when Mr. Clark Howell, the
present editor of the paper, will have
to step out to make way for a man
whose views are in more thorough ac
cord with those of the present own
ers?’’
Hoke Smith, Clark Howell, Inman
and Hemphill, backed by Banigan of
rubber trust fame, running a paper to
bamboozle the Democratic yeomanry
of Georgia! Wbat do the masses
think of this unholy combine?

COW RESCUED FROM RIVEH.
Valuable Animal Mires in the Thick Mud of
The Oost&naula.
A big red cow got into the Oostanaula
river just above the Fifth avenue bridge
yesterday afternoon. She had probably
waded into to drink, but in attempting
to get out on the Fourth- ward side,
mired to the flanks in the soft, slimy
mud.
The animal was rapidly growing, ex
hausted from her frantic struggles to ex
tricate herself, when Policeman Alexan
der, Messrs. John D. Moore, Neub Wat
ters and Wash Tolbert discovered the
distressed beast. They at once set to
work to rescue her. Finding that i
would be impossible to get her through
the mud on that side of the river, a boat
was secured and the cow made to swim
to the opposite bank.
She was then driven onto dry land
without any trouble.
