A tkcond Fire Yesterday.
There was a second alarm from box 13
yesterday morning. The lyst came at 7
o’clock and the fire was in a closet in
Mrs. Gregory’s home at the corner of
Broad and Seventh avenue. The fire
was put out with an extinguisher and did
but little damage. The fatal number,
13, seems to Lave been in evidence yes
terday.
A Card of Thanks.
Editor Tribune:--We wish to express
through the columns of your paper our
admiration for the excellent work of the
fire companies in extinguishing the fire
in our warehouse yesterday morning, and
toextend to each member of them our
sincere thanks for the same.
Respectfully yours,

The Reason W by,
Stark Burney, the tailor, gives the
following reasons for his very large pat
ronage. He sells the bent suite for the
money, trims them better and fits the cus
tomer to perfection. The moderate
charges are very large factors too, in
this consideration. Suits made to order
for sl6, $lB, S2O, $25, S3O, $35 and S4O.
He has 1,000 pants patterns to select
from, and can make them from $3 to $lO.
See him and be convinced.
More Beautiful Goods,
A Tribune reporter stopped in at Mr.
J. Sam Veal’s yesterday and found him
as busy as a bee opening up beautiful art
goods—more than the reporter had ever
seen brought to Rome before. There
were large and handsome water color
pictures in neat and artistic frames.
These goods will beautify any bridal
chamber and as they are all the rsge, one
could scarcely find a more appropriate
offering for such an occasion. Don’t
fail to see them as Mr. Veal says it is a
pleasure for him to shoW his goods. Call
on him.

UNDER THE WHEELS
Robert Moore Mangled Id East Rome by
a Switch Engine,
BRAKEMAN UN C. R. & S. RAILROAD
Seeing Bia Terrible Doom Tried to Throw
Body Across the. Rails. But Was Dragged
Off Track By 'Henry Maun.
At 10:45 yesterday morning Robert
Moore, a brakeman on the Chatta
nooga Roipe & Southern railroad,was
so horribly crushed under a switch
engine in cEast Rome ,that death re
sulted in a few minutes.,
Moore is a general utility man, fre
quently running extra as a conductor.’
Yesterday morning he left Cedartown
on the freight train as brakeman.
In charge of the train were Conduc
tor McEachen, Engineer Madden,and
Robert Moore and Henry Mann were
breaking.
The- train arrived here about 10
o’clock, and the engine at once began
switching’about making up the train
for Chattanooga. Moore went with
them to East Rome to get some box
cars.
Just how he came to make the fa
tal step that resulted in his death will
never be known. He was between
two cars which had the automatic
brakes, and stepped clear to motion
the engineer to back up.
For some unknown reason Moore
stepped between the cars again just
as the engineer pulled the lever, and
the locomotive came back with a jerk.
Henry Mann, who was standing near,
and fearing an accident, rushed for
ward. A thrilling and fearful sight
met his horrified gaze. Two wheels
of a car had crushed across Moore’s
legs below the knee grinding them to
a pulp.
As Mann reached to rescue his friend
the mangled man with the awful con -
sciousness that he was doomed, made a
superhuman effort to throw his body
across the rail so that the swiftly moving
and merciless wheels might end his agony
in quick and eternal oblivion.
But Mann with a quick movement
dragged Moore from under the cars
before the other wheels touched the
quivering body. Then a scene took
place that would have shaken
nerves of steel. Moore, with the
dews of death gathering fast on
his pallid brow, and a great agony
dimming bis eyes, said to his friend
“Henry for God’s sake end this ter
rible pain. Take that coupling pin
and knock me in the head. Ab! God
how I suffer. ”j
“Bob, I cannot, cannot,’’ Manure
plied his frame trembling with a
storm of grief.
Then the mained body quivered,
the eyes grew wide with supreme
agony, the splendid torso upheaved
and then he lay silent and still. Dr.
Harbin had been summoned but death
had claimed its victim before he ar
rived.
The body was carried to Hanks un
dertaking establishment, where it was
prepared for burial. The legs below the
knees were crushed into pulp, while great
holes were torn in his thighs. There was
a gash just to the right of the right eye,
knd the right shoulder was bruised. The
chock to his system was immediate and
terrible.
Moore was about 30 years of age and
unmarried. He had a magnificent
physique and was very strong and active-
His home was at Trion, where the re.
mains were shipped yesterday afternoon
for interment.
He was highly esteemed by his em
ployers and was very popular with all
his fellow workers. He had been with
the road several years and was considered
a valuable and safe man in any position
that he might be called upon to fill.
The train crew was completely un
nerved.by the terrible accident.

DROWNED IN A WELL
Negro Boy od Rounsaville Farm Meets
Death io Peculiar Manner.
LOWERED HEADFOREMOST INTO WELL
Bucket Fell and Boy Proffered to Go After it.
Rope Broke— WasJDrowned Before
Help Could Reach Him.
A peculiar accident happened at
the Rounsaville farm on Silver Creek
yesterday afternoon about one o'clock
in which a small negro boy lost bis
life.
A number of colored cotton pickers
were at work on the high mountain
just back of Mr. RounsaviUe’s sum
mer residence.
Just before returning to work after
dinner they went to the cistern on
the mountain to procure water,
While drawing it up with a plow line
the bucket slipped off and fell into the
water.
The negroes were in a quandary
how to get the bucket out when Joe
Sims, a boy about 12 years of age prof
fered to go down after it.
So they proceeded to tie the rope
about the boy’s feet, and began to
lower him head foremost. He had de
scended only a few feet when the rope
broke and he plunged headlong twen
ty feet into about eight feet of water.
His legs were tied fast with the
rope, and thus hampered he could
not right himself. The helpless ne
groes above were compelled to stand
and see the little fellow drown. It was
late in the afternoon before the body
was recovered.

LANHAM’S MILLINERY OPENING
Striking Creations of The Very Best French
Artists Were Displayed In Profusion.
The most up to date wonders of the
Parisian world of millinery were drawn
upon to furnish the supply for Lanham’s
opening days. From early morning un
til the doors closed at night, the mil
linery department of the great store in
the Fourth Ward was thronged with
visitors who were delighted beyond
their expectations. Never before in the
history of Rome has such a collection of
fine and stylish hats been shown in the
city.
The hats were not of the ordinary
fur fits bit were nearly all hand
somely made hats of the most beautiful
and costly material wrought into won
derfully becoming shapes.
Fine shird velvet soft drooping feath
ers fine aigrette and beautiful birds all
went into the make up of this fine col
lection of hats.
The display of infants and childrens
hats and caps, was one of the finest ever
shown in Rome and no mother should
think of buying her child a hat or cap
without seeing the beautiful line at
Lanhams. It is safe to say there is not
another stock of millinery in the st ue
that can excel and few to equal that of
Lanham & Sons.
