TEAS.
Tetley’s Stands at the Head of
the Column.
Tetley’a teas are
(the best? is asked by many. Th« re
are various reasons, both convincing
and unanswerable to any intelligent
thinker. Tetley is among the fields
ot the greatest tea country in the
world for high grade teas. He Ins
made' the tea industry a study and
<« selects only the very bast goods tor
his trade. His teas are rich, fragrant
and mellow, and from it you wid not
get any of the poisonous effects so
common in the low grade teas. It is
handled but once with the hands,
that in the picking, the balance is
done with machinery. It is packed
in halt pound packages and sells at
25, 35 and 50 cents the package for
the Oolong, Ceylon or the mixed.
proof of our-statement above
we ask that you try a Cup of it. It
is being served by Mrs- A,C, Heggie
on the second flour at the store of
Bass Bros. & Co., where she will be
until Saturday ut 0 o, til If you
*lisk your grocer for Tetley’s tea and
he reports none in stock “but can
supply you with some just as good,”
we would have you to remember that
the string of self-interest answers
with its chords to every sound. It
vibrates with the funeral bell, and
the song of a grocer who desires t<
sell a cheap tea for a large profit is
considering the interest of his purse
and not the good of your stomach.
If he desires to give you the best, he
can quickly get Tetley’s teas from
us as cheap as he can buy them
anywhere in the United States, We
are their wholesale agents for Rome.
The Way to Get Trade
is to keep the best. Cheap, trashy
goods never have and never will
satjsfy and hold a first class trade,
is why we have always sought the
best, for there is nothing too good
/or our customers and the large trade
we have is proof sufficient that what
we state is true This is particularly
true of coffee. Most people want it
good. Some will not be satisfied
• unless they have the best, and when
they get a can of our Q & Q Mocha
and Java they have the height of
perfection in strength and flavor the
world produces You can get it in
3 pound cans for $l.O J each.

Store of C. D. Wood, Bnilarlzed and
S2OO lo Cash Taken.
TWO NEGRO BOYS WERE ARRESTED
Town Badly Frightened Until the Truth Be
came renown When the Humor of
Sltuta.ton Struck All.
The cash register in ?.Ir. Chas. D
Wood’s grocery store was robbed of
about S2OO in cash early Sunday morning.
The woik was unquestionably done by
some one familiar with the interior of the
store, and who laid his plans with uner
ring accuracy and shrewdntes. ’
It was late when the store was closed
Saturday night, and Sunday morning
Mr. Wood went down to his place of
business to feed aud water some poulty.
He was startled to find the door opened
St once under his touch and without us
ing his key. An investigation was im -
mediately made, entrance had been ef
fected.
The screws :n the lock had been loos
ened in such a manner that a moderately
hard push would pull the lock off. This
was done Saturday night probably while
the store was filled with customers.
Mr. Wood examined his cash register,
and found it rifled of its entire contents,
which was in the neighborhood of S2OO.
The thief was after money, as nothing
else of consequence was missed,
Luther Nash and Douglas Samuels,
two negroes were arrested and placed in
jail yesterday. Luther Nash has been
employed by Mr, Wood as a delivery boy
and was of course perfectly familiar with
the store and all surroundings.
Suspicion points very strongly towards
Nash as the gailty j-arty, but he is shrewd
and when closely questioned yesterday
shut up like an oyster Officers are at
work on the case and there will probably
be some new developments shortly.

THE COMEDY EVENT.
The App?arance of Robart Graham Will
Be Most Notable of Season,
Those who attend the performance at
the opera house next Wednesday evening
will enjoy a - rare treat.
The management of the opera house
personally guarantees this attraction to be
one of the best ever seen in home.
Robert E. Graham this season has se
cured a comedy which, in theme, is en
tirely new and original and well adapated
to his peculiar style of acting. The cast
with which he has surrounded himself is
a most excellent one. each individual be
ing especially adapted to the charaters
assigned then. The title of the' comer'y
“Who’s Your Friend?” suggests numerous
possibilities of entanglement which hap
pened in every day life.
Tne scenes and situations are naturally
brought about, in fact the entire two
hours and a half is one long continurd
laugh. It is the manager’s opinion that
it is the best peice of property
Mr, Graham has had for along
time, and the character of Otis Dew
berry, which the star portrays, will be
one of the best things Mr. Graham has
ever done. The popular comsdian will
probably be greeted by a very large audi

NO RAIN Last MONTH.
September, 18»7. Flr.t Month Since May
18SS in Which No R.in Fell
September. 1897, is the first month
since May, 1855, in which no rainfall
was recorded.
This remarkable fact was
discovered by Mr. W. M. Tow
ers in looking over the records
kept by the late R. S. Norton. Mr.
Norton kept a faithful daily record of
all the weather conditions from the
time he located in Rome until his
death. Since Mr. Norton’s death Mr.
Towers has kept the record.
During the month of September
just past not a drop of rain fell in
Rome or in this section so far as
known. Up to yesterday it has been
just exactly fifty-four days since we
have been blessed with a shower. All
the earth is parched and dried and
late vegetation is an absolute failure.
Tee streams are drying up, and in
many sections the wells have all gone
dry.
The rivers are very low and naviga
tion is altogether stopped except for
very light draught boats. The new
boat which was launched Saturday
and which will be ready in a few days
was built especially for low water con
ditions.
Some days ago a preposterous story
was printed in a few papers to the ef
fect that a child had been born up in
Tennessee with a full set of teeth aud
a mustache four inches long. It fur
ther stated that the kid on the third
day stood up in bed and in stentorian
tones announced that there would be
no more rain in seven years. After
that it fell back dead.
This story, in some way, became cir
culated among the negroes here, and
the ignorant and superstitious among
them firmly believe it every word.
