JOHN L “WOULD DO ’ Famous Pugilist Tells Wbat He Would Do as Mayor of New Ycrk. ‘ALL MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS To Be Owned By the < ity—For Dollar Gae Sunday Saloons iu<| Glove Conteeta to ■Be Allowed. New York, Oct. 3 —John L. Sul livan, at the Vanderbilt hotel and dis cussed the coming election in this city, “Mr. bullivan, what would you do if you were elected mayor of the Greater New York?” he was asked. “This question,” replied the migh ty John L., cannot be answered off hand. It is of great importance, and is one which ought to be given careful study. No man ought to afaswer such a question in an offhand way.” John L„ stroked his big mustache, lighted a perfecto cigar and puffed away at it like a steam engine. 1 “If a man want? to talk intelligent ly,’’said John L.,“he ought to smoke. If I were the mayor of Greater New York I would always smoke. I have given the mayoralty the greatest thought, because I expect to be in a position pretty soon where it may be necessary to act. lam a candidate for mayor .of Boston, and what is more. I expect to beat Josiah Quincy. “The platform on which I would stand if mayor of the greatest city in America would be this: lam in favor of municipal ownership of all corpo rations. I believe that the city should own the railroads, the gas houses, and gas should never be higher than sl. “I would give this city a very liber al goverment. I would study the wants of the people and govern them accordingly. lam opposed to trusts. I hate trusts as badly as a yellow dog does poison. If there were any trusts in this city I would soon get rid of them all.” “flow about street railways?”* “Street railways in general should all be the property of the city. If such were the case then the fares would be reduced. There is no reason why a penny fare should not be.es tablished during certain hours of the day. Os course, as long as the rail ways are the property of rich corpo rations, no reduction in the fares will be made. “I would never allow the politicians to run me. Nobody can run me. I would appoint the very best men I could find to office. I would pick men who had been tried. ‘‘The very first thing I would do would be to get hold of all the gas companies. If they would not sell out to the city I would build eras houses and supply ’the city. One-dol lar gas is the stuff. It is nothing less than robbery to charge more that sl. ‘‘How about gambling houses?” ‘‘lf I were mayor of the Greater New York. I would license all the gambling houses. There is no reason why a gambling house should not be licensed like saloons. •‘There is another important ques tion which I have studied with the greatest of care. That refers to the wage system among the poorer peo ple. All classes of workingmen ought to be paid alike. This is the right thing to do, and then there will be no quarreling among the working men.” “How would you enforce the excise law?” - Everyone knows ifi /£) f-. -he biblical story go rilTr~| |l I w °f tbe passover. Jal-7 I' The angel of death turned aside only Lji' - at the doors of the I r&vT&W wchosen people. * ’lbe first-born of Waffl I rM'/T—- others were 7'« 'irs ~ slain. There is a chosen people to ’ ■ day, at whose doors the angel of death turns aside and whose first-born es cape unscathed while the children of others perish. The chosen people are the healthy people. Nine-tenths of the deaths among children are due to the ill-health of the mothers during the period preceding moth erhood. ’ Cvery woman owes it to herself, her husband and her children to keep herself healthy in a womanly way. She should thoroughly understand her own physical make-up. She should realize the import tance of keeping the organs of womanhood healthy and vigorous. She can only do this by taking proper care of herself and using the proper remedy for weakness or disease of those organs. The best remedyforweakness or disease of the organs peculiar towomen is Dt. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription. It is truly wonderful in its effects on the female organism. It allays inflammation, soothes pain and re-, stores health and vigor. Get it at the drug gist's and take no substitute. Your health and your children’s health depend upon it. “ Since I wrote you we have had a baby girl born to us,” writes W. R. Malcolm, of Knobel, Clay Co., Ark. ”My wife took your ’ Gdlden Medical Dis ‘ covery ’ and also your ‘ Favorite Prescription ’ all during the expectant period and until confine ment. and she had no trouble to mention. A stouter, healthier child was never born. Our child will be one vear of age the Bth inst. and she has not been sick a day. Has not had so much as the colic." Every woman in America should own a copy of Dr. Pierce’s Common Sense Medical Adviser. In its 1,008 pages she will find plain talks about all sorts of ailments. These talks are made plainer by copious illustrations. About 90 pages are devot'd to woman’s dis eases and weaknesses. There are sugges tions for home-treatment. This book has already gone into more thou a million homes. The original price was Sr. 50. _ Now an edition in paper covers is being distrib uted free. J f you need medical advice write Prof. Munyon, 1505 Arch Street, “I would allow the respectable re sorts to keep open all day Sunday. A man who works during the week wants a little recreation on that day. He wants to go where he can take his wife and children with him. With a little music and with a glass of beer he feels elegant. There would be less drunkards. “If you will investigate the police epurt records you will learn that since the enforcement of the Raines law under the Roosevelt system, there have been more drundards than be fore the time the reform administra tion went into power.” “Who do you think will be the first mayor of the Greater New York?’’ “My personal choice is Judge Van Wyck. I have read what he said, and I think he is a broad-minded man. He certainly appears to be a liberal man. The Tammany platform is all right, too. “Reform’ is played out. Look at the condition of the streets. I never saw a city torn up so badly as New York is today. “I don’t think Platt has any chance of winning. And as for Seth Low, I have nothing to say against him.” ‘‘Would you permit glove contests to be held?” ‘‘Certainly I would. Foot-ball is a slaughter house alongside of an in nocent scientific glove contest or fight.” , < ondensed Testimony Chas. B. Hood, Broker and Manu facturer’s Agent, Columbus, > Ohio, certifies that Dr. King’s New Discovery has no equal as a Cough remedy. J. D. Brown, Prop. St James Hotel, nt. Wayne, Ind,, testifies th't he was cured of a Cough of two years standing, caused by La Grippe, by Dr. King’s New Dis covery. UNION COTION MILLS. Stockholders of the LaFayette Mill Hold Their Annual Meet.ng. The Walker County Messenger of this week contains the following: The annual meeting of the Union Cot. ton Mills company was held at their of fice on Saturday 2nd inst. TJie meeting was called to order by the president. A. R. Steele was appointed chairman, and Jas. P. Shattuck secretery. A committee was appointed to accertain the number of shares represented; theiebeing a ma jority of the stock represented, the busi ness of the meeting was then taken up. The report of the Operations of the mill for the past year was read, which showed that the company’s business was in good condition. The report was received with great enthusiasm by the stock holders present. It being so much bet ter than was expected, the company by a rising vote tendered a vote of thanks .to the management, the board of directors, and the employees for their faithful ser vices during the past year. The same board of directors, and offi cers were elected for the ensuing year. Walker county has reason to be proud of the Union Cotton Mills, because it is a home enterprise, quite a large amount of stock being held by citizens of the county, and if the stock holders give the mills their moral support, and do what they can to strengthen the hands of the management it will be a grand success, and will build up the county as no other enterprise has ever done. So let every stockholder, and every citizen stretch forth their hands to help along such a worthy enterprise. Tipping the Curate. The ever recurrent question of tipping has taken on a new phase, and a curate has been writing to the papers to com plain that he is the only person who gets nothing out of a wedding. Clerk, verger, pew opener, policeman and all the rest are “remembered,” and the wedding fee goes to the incumbent, who sits at home at ease. It is a little diffi cult to decide what is the smallest sum that would not offend a curate. At any rate, those about to marry might make a note of it, and if it is a £5 note all the better for the curate.—London World. Yellow Fever Germ. breed in the bowels. DANGER IN COD a. Serious Results Sometimes Follow Its Ex ceasive Use. Common soda is all right in its place and indispensable in the kitchen and for cooking and washing purposes, but it was never intended for a medicine, and people who use it as such will some day regret it. We refer to the common use of soda to relieve heartburn or sour stoma-h, a habit which thousands of people prac tice almost daily, and one which is fraught with danger; moreover the soda only gives temporary relief and. in the ,end the stomach trouble gets worse and worse, The soda acts as a mechanical irritant to the walls of the stomach and bowels and cases are on record vwhere it ao cumulated in the intesfafcs, causing death by iuflamation or Dr. Harlandson recommends as the safest and surest cure for sour stomach (acid dytpepsia) an excellent preparation sold by druggists under the name of Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets. These tab lets are large 20 grain lozenges, very pleasant to taste and contain the natural acids, peptones and digestive elements essential to good digestion, and when taken after meals they digest the food perfectly and promptly before it has time to ferment, sour and poison the blood and nervous system. Dr. Wuerth states that he invariably uses Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets in all cases of stomach derangements and finds them a certain cure no* only for sour stomach, but by promptly digesting the food they create a healthy appetite, increase flesh and strengthen the action of the heart and liver. They are not a cathartic, but intended only for stomach diseases and weakness and will be found reliable in any stomach trouble except cancer of the stomach.
