HISTORIC JONES
A County Which Has Given Georgia
Hany Eminent Men.
JURISTS AND STATESMEN AMONG THEM
McDonald*!verson, Lamir. Cooper, John eon,
and Others Great in the History of
the State.
A correspondent of the Macon Tele
graph at Clinton, Jones county, writes
the following interesting reminiscen
ces:
Jones coanty ha? given to Georgia
many noble men. Here at Clinton
used to live Charles J. McDonald, pne
of Georgia’s best governors, and here
resided Alfred Iverson, the colleague
of Toombs in the United States senate.
Here the lamented Henry G. Lamar
began life, practicing law. Mark A.
Cooper practiced law here and was
solicitor-general when a young man.
Jas. Johnson, provisional governor of
Georgia after the war, taught school
at Clinton in Early life, and Hiram
Warner, greatest of Georgia’s judges
on the benceb, used to teach school at
Clinton. And speaking of Hiram
Warner, it may be of interest to say
that a marauding party of Yankee
soldiers, passing through Greenville,
hung the old judge to a tree to force
him to tell where his money was, and
left him for dead, and he was rescued
in time for preservation of life by an
old family servant.
Here in Clinton was reared ’ Hon.
James H. Blount of Macon, who
served two decades in congress, and
here lived John Nichols, who repre
sented the first district in congress;
and Clinton was the home of Joseph
Day, many years speaker of the Geor
gia house of representatives, and also
of James Grav, many years a member

legacy to Mercer University for the
benefit of young men of J ones county.
Col. James Blount owns 10,000 acres
of land in Jones county, and it is
thought he will do something hand
some for the young men of Jones
county on the same line.
The patriarch of Clinton is Dr. James
F. Barron, born here in 1825. Dr. Bar
ron is still active and his mind is bright
and teeming with reminiscent lore He
has given has lands to his sons in fee
simple, but verbally enjoined them to
never part with their lands. The doctor
reserved a small farm, and will make
one and one-half bales of ootton to the
acre. These lands in Jones are wonder
fully productive, possessing a latent
energy and capacity, responding to in
telligent treatment with great results.
Dr. Barron is making a bale and one
half to the acre on land sown in rye,
and planted in cotton on the 10th of
May, and the land has been in cultiva
tiori ever since 1812. and will be better
fifty years from now if properly man
aged. The trees in the court house yard
are the old time non-bearing mulberry
and they are seventy years of age.
Clinton is noted for its healthfu'aess,
Jones coanty was named for Hon.
James Jones, a Marylander, who came
to Georgia when a youth and studied
laty in Savannah and at the age of
twenty-three was elected to the legis
lature. He was a member of the legis
lature in 1795, when it was held in
Augusta, Ga . and he opposed the Ya
zoo act. In 1798 he was elected to cong
ress and was an adherent of Jefferson,
and John Adams. His was a brilliant
record in congress, and he. died in Wash
ington city and was buried beside his
friend, Gin James Jaes.son, who stele
fire from heaven with which to burn
the Zazoo act parchment.

Superintendent B'anprle Relates a Little
Incident of His Famous Handshake.
Did you ever shake hands with Super
intendent Beauprie of the Southern
Railway?
Never? Well, don’t do it. No man
or woman, either, it is presumed, ever
wants to shake hands with him a second
time. It is like the closing of a vise upon
the hand and you will be fortun ite if
every bone is not crushed.
Mr. Beaupne’s handshake is known
from Canada to Florida, and his vic
tims are numbered by the tens of thou
sands. None of them, so far as known,
have actually been made cripples but
many have been subjected to the mos 1
excruciating agony and several have
been known to carry their hands in
bandages and poultices for weeks.
A Macon Telegraph reporter who had
been so thoughtless as to shake hands
with the big superintendent of the
Southern for the second time, was talk
ing to Mr. Beauprie the other night
about his grip on a person’s hand and
learned that he unconsciously crushes a
person’s bones without knowing it. In
fact, he never turns loose until reminded
that he is giving pain.
‘ T never will forget the time I shook
hands with Grover Cleveland,”'said
Mr. Beauprie. “Mr. Cleveland pass
ed through Chattanooga and I was
there with a large number of others
to greet him. His wife was with him.
I got in with the crowd and on being
presented to the president I nataural
ly grasped his hand. While holding
his hand I passed a few words with
him and unconsciously squeezed his
hand all the time. I saw that some
thing was wrong, but not suspecting
the cause kept on talking, aftd 1 sup
pose tightening my grip all the time.
The president’s face grew redder and
redder until I actually thought he
was on the verge of appoplexy.
While I was thinking what would be

best to do in case the president should
topple over with appoplexy, his wife
noticed him and becoming alarmed,
cried out, “Oh, Mr. Cleveland, are
you ill?” By this time I guess the
president had stood it just as long as
he could, and he blurted out in lan
guage more forcible than chaste: “I’ll!
No 1 This blankety blankety man has
crushed my hand to a jelly.”
Os course I immediately turned
loose and apologized, but the presi
dent got out of the crowd as soon as
possible and refused to see anyone else
while he strayed in Chattanooga. I
regretted the occurrence, but really I
didn’t think what I was doing.’’
