IT STILL DECLINES
Only Two Days of Week Pass and Cot
ton is off 17 Points.
A DROP OF FIVE PO NTS YESTERDAY
Bellii g on Streets Here For OH- Opinions as
to the Cause of its Persia ent
Decline.
Cotton went off five more points
yesterday.
With the decline of twelve points
Monday added to this and only two
days of the week gone, cotton has
tumbled 17 points.
The receipts were fairly good yes
terday, street prices ranging from 5 7-8 to
6 cents.
A comparison of prices here and at
other leading cities of Georgia, shows
that Rome pays the highest prices.
On last Saturday middlings sold here
for 6 18. Atlanta paid 5 7-8 for the
same; Griffin 5 78; Macon 5 5-8, Savan
nah 5 7-8. and other points in about the
same pioportion. Rome led all other
points in street prices.
The downward-tendency of cotton is
ascribed to several reasons, varying ac
cording to the particular views of the
bulls or bears. A leading factor of
Rome said yesterday: , •
“The decline of cotton is due
to anenormous crop, it will not
be far ehort of ten million
bales, and to the lack of demand
among the spinners of the world.
They ate buying no more cotton than
they can help. The producers are forced
to sell, because their obligations are
maturing*and must be met. I believe
you will see cotton selling at 5 1-4
within sixty days.”
This is the view taken by the Macon
Telegraph in an editorial yesterday.
“A decrease of 8 3 points in the esti
mate of the crop condition was shown in
the government report yesterday. It is
4 p lints lower than the average for the
last ten years, and yet the speculators
gave th j price another whack.
This further confirms the position
taken all along by The Telegraph, towit:
That with the assistance of that new ani
mal-the Great Southern Bear--the
speculators have been able to corner the
purchasing side-of the market. Bull
news from the south, no matter how well
founded, has no sort of effect. It only
tempts them to give tbe price another
whack.
“The report shows a decline in the
condition of the crop in every cotton
state, In North Carolina it is off 17
points. In Tennessee off 12 points. In
South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Ar
kansas off 10 points. Indian Territory
off 8 points. Alabama and Mississippi
off 7 points. Louisiana and Texas off 6
points. And so it goes. The specula
tors ponder these figures but a moment
and then they give the price another
whack.
“The question is, how long - can they
hold it down?”
Coughs, colds, pneumonia and fevers
may be prevented by keeping the
blood pure and the system toned up
with Hood’s Sarsaparilla.
A few weeks ago the editor was taken
with a very severe cold that caused h'm
to be in a most miserable condition. It
was undoubtedly a bad case of la grippe
and recognizing it as dangerous he took
immediate steps to bring about a speedy
cure. From the advertisement of Cham
berlain’s Cough Remedy and the many
good recommendations included therin.
we concluded to make a first trial of the
medicine. To say that it was satisfac
tory in its results, is putting it very
mildly, indeed. It acted like magic
and the result was a speedy and perma
nent cure. We have no hesitancy in
recommending this Excellent Cough
Remedy to anyone afflicted with a cough
or cold in any form.—The Banner of

NOT ALWAYS UNDERSTOOD.
A fact often overlooked, or not al
ways understood, is that women suffer
as much from distressing kidney and
bladder troubles as the men. The womb
is situated back of and very close to, the
bladder, and for that reason any dis
tress. disease or inconvenience mani
fested in the kidneys, back, bladder or
urinary passage is often, by mistake, at
tributed to female weakness or womb
trouble of sort.
The error is easily made and may be
as easily avoided by setting urine aside
for twenty-four hours; a sediment or
settling is evidence that your kidneys
and bladder need doctoring. If you have
pain or dull aching in the bapk, pass
water too frequently, or scanty supply,
with smarting or burning, —these are
also convincing proofs of kidney trouble.
If you have doctored without benefit,
try Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-Root, the
great kidney remedy. The mild and the
extraordinary effect will surprise you.
It stands the highest for its wonderful
cures. If you take a medicine you
should take the best. At druggists fifty
cents and one dollar. You may have a
sample bottle and pamplet, both sent
free by mail. Mention Rome Tribune
and send your address to Dr. Kilmer

SCHLAPBACK WAI THE MAN.
He Rin the Greenville. 8, C., Car Thieves to
Barth Instead of Hanie.
The Tribune yesterday re-printed a
story from the Atlanta Coustitution
relative to tbe manner in which the
Dalton car thieves were run to earth.
In the story thd following paragraph
occurred:
“Captain Tom Hanie is the hero of
many an encounter with outlaws.
His experience would fill a book.
Some years ago he got after a band
of car pirates at Greenville, S. C., anti
in thirty days had about fifteen of
them on the way to the penitentiary.’’
As a matter of fact Coronor Fred
Schlapbach of this city ran the Green
ville gang to earth. Capt. Hanie at
that time was chief of police and cap
tured one of the men who eluded
Schlapbach in the round-up. Mr.
Sehlapback yesterday gave The Trit
une reporter the. following .brief ac
count of the occurrence. «
“It was in 1888.” said he,, “that I
was engaged to trail the car thieves
down. They had been robbing the
railroads for years in much tbe same
manner those at Dalton operated. I
worked on the case six months before-
I had conclusive evidence, and then
we hauled in six of them. The affair
involved several prominent merchants
of that city, and was the sensation of
the state. The leader of the gang was
a shrewd, wiley rascal, and hard to
catch.”
Mr. Schlapbach followed the pro
fession of a detective for many years,
and can tell enough stories of his ad
ventures to fill a book.

TBE DALTON TRIAL
0n« ol the Biggeit Crowds Ever Iherr
Present Monday.
ARRAIGNMENT) OF THE-C'R THIEVES
Ko ban Don and Six Others W Pleas «»f
Guilty—The Scei e in tbffCuurt House
During Trial.
The Dalton car thieves and their
plea of guilty to eleven bills of indict
ment is the . topic of conversation on
all sides now.
The detailed story of the scene in
the court room at Dalton Monday it
from the Constitution.
The men who pled guilty were:
Walter Bohannon, the chief.
Tom Kinneman,,
Bill Long,
Ben Pearce,
Ed Morris,
Sam Painter, ,
Jim Harris, who turned states evi
dence.]
Ralph Ellison, a drayman, who of
ten handled the stolen goods for Bo
hannon, pleaded not guilty and de
cided to take chances of a trial.
Judge Fite did not sentence any of
the prisoners. He will.wait until all the
cases ar j disposed of, those indicted for
receiving the stolen goods as well as
those who stole them.
All of Whitfield’s roads lead to Dal
ton today and from 5 until 10 o’clock thej
were haed with vajons, carte, buggi-s
and men on horseback. A stranger
might have thought that Sam Jones was
conducting one of his meetiugs some
where in this neighborhood.
Bohannon was regaided as a subdued
subdued type of a Jesse James or Rube
Burrows. His long career as a car pjrate
who had stolen freights worth perhaps
SIOO,OOO, had invested him with a mel
odramatic interest which appealed to the
curiosity of old and young.
The robbers were a miserable looking
set of human beings They were in the
agony of remorse, with the added t< rrors.
of an impending long imprisonment
chains at hard labor. They siiowea
their agitation plainly in their faces.
Some of them, perhaps, were harrowed
by the sobs of their poor, crushed' wives
who set near, Jianging their heads in sor
row,
Mrs. BohanW# was not one of the
wives who broke down. She is a
petite woman, rather pretty, and
dressed in good taste. She neither
smilled nor shed a tear, bnt sat there
taking in everything that
Nowand then she whispered some
thing to her husband—a word of en
couragement. She made up her mind
to meet the situation without a tre
mor —and she did it.
Bohannon was deeply worried; that
could be told at a glance. The relief
which usually comes with confession
of girlt had not y“t come upon him
in its full force. He was uncertain
what fate was in store for him. He
had resolved to plead guilty and take
whatever sentence the judge might
give him.
The rober chief is about thirty three
years old. He does not look any older
io the face, but bis hair is as gray as
man’s at sixty. '
No doubt the devilment in which
he has been engaged so long aged
him. For years he has realized that
discovery was liable to come at any
time. He has known that detectives
were on his trail. Sometimes be cul
tivated them and robbed the trains
oh which they were riding. Again
he would order his band to stop op
erations until the hunt was aban
doned. Bohannon had some way of
telling when the railroad was trying
to catch him. Once or twice he had
members of bis gang hire themselves
to the road in order that he might be
given timely warning.
