Al P. Woodruff Sen! need to Eight

WAS FOUND GUILTY OF SEDUCTION

Counsel For Defense Appeal for New Trial
Bond Fixed a, 83.500 and Will Prob

A ease was disposed of in Superior
court yesterday which was tragic in
its sequence of bitter sorrows. A young
woman’s life darkened with the great
est sadness that can come into a wo
man’s life. A family shattered, a
stalwart young man, keen and fresh
in the full prime of iife, blighted by
his wayward act.
It was on of the tragedies that stirs
the souls of men and women, and
causes hearts to bleed with deepest
anguish.
Al P. Woodruff was found guilty of
seduotionj and sentenced to eight
years in the penitentiary. The ar
gument in the case was concluded
yesterday morning about 10:30, the
charge given to the jury and they re
tired to make the verdict.
They were out only a short while
before returning with a verdict of
guilty. Woodruff broke down under
the terrible strain, when Judge Hen
ry sentenced him to eight years in
the penitentiary. It was a trying or
deal, and would have shaken nerves
of steel, '
His attorneys, W. H. Ennis and W.
J. Nunnally, at once made a motion
for a new trial, and Woodruff’s bond
was fixed at $3 500. An effort was
made to secure bondsmen last night, but
without success. His brother W. W..
Woodruff, a traveling man, arrived in
Rome at 2 o’clock this morning and the
bond will orobablo be made today.

COL. JIKE IN QUARANTINE.
Aasstant Keeper of the Penitentiary Moore
Has a Thi filing Experience.
Lieutenant Colonel Jake Moore, assist
ant keeper of the penitentiary, is charged
with the duty of visiting every peniten
tiary convict camp in Georgia at least
once a month, says the Constitution.
Yesterday he returned from one of his
periodical trips and came into the pres
ence of Judge Turner with a somewhat
shop-worn appearance. ,
“Judge,” he said, “this quarantine
business is—awful. About every town I
struck wanted to punch mo full of holes
and fumigate me because I came from
At.anta. They’ve got a crazy idea that
Atlanta’s chuck full of yellow fever, and
you can't do a thing with ’em. Down at
Bainbridge they wouldn’t tven let me
off the train to inspect the camp there.”
“So .you didn’t inspect it?” asked
Judge Turner.
“Well,” replied Colonel Jake, “you
can jest bet 1 did. I went to Donald
sonville, got a horse and bugay and
drove back to Bainbridge without a
whimper. Here’s my report—also a
small expense account.”
Going to buy a dress pattern—trim
mings to match it, a ladies’ hat, any item
in notions, shoes or furnishings'—any
thing carried in a dry goods store? If
you are then come to our place and look
for it? We have the greatest stock in
Rome, bought, so we believe, very much
lower than prices paid by others. We
believe this, and what's more, we can
demonstrate to any one, who will take
the trouble to look into the matter, that
we can sell'many (lines of choice mer
chandise with a small margin to us, at
lower figures than the cost prices of any
merchant in this city. We stand by this
.declaration. Get samples and prices, any
where you will, and then see what we
lean 10. We invite comparison. We
challenge competition. Our pledge for
it, your money -shall do you as much
good when spent in our house as any
store in the land. Our recent great pur
chases put us, for this season, out of the
reach of competition. Our stock is
especially strong in dress goods, linings
and trimmings—strong in everything
full in every department.—Bass.
