2 SOUTHERN WONT CUT Tho Se-boatd Air Line Has Slaughtered Ra es to New York City. BU SOUFHERN MAINTAINS O D PRICES Traveling Is Dirt Cheap Over AH the Sea bonrita Syslerti—Southern Official* Says They W ill Not Euter the Slashing. The Seaboard Air Line has wade a heavy cut in passenger rates between Atlanta and New York, but with the calm indifference of one not affected the Southern will give no attention to the cut and declares that it will not go into the slashing contest. But the Seaboard Air Line has made a big swipe at rates and has filed with the interstate commerce commission figures which are almost as low as the cut made last year when the Simon ton injunction came on. There is an all-round cut of 33i per cent, in pas senger rates between Atlanta and Norfolk. This will, of course, affect the rate between Atlanta and New York. According to the announced differ ential table the following is a com parison of rates between Atlanta and main connections. Old. New. Norfolk'ls.2s 10.00 Washingtonl7 50 13 00 Baltimore 18 70 11 00 New Y0rk...24 00 18.00 Richmondls.2s 13 20 Petersbu.gls,2s 12.30 It it evidently the idea of the Seaboard that they are going into a war to the death, for it is announced that the rates are subject to change, and another series of rates has presumably been filed with the interstate commerce commission to go into effect after the 25th should the Southern meet the present cut. Officials of the Southern declare that there will be no rate war. Their attitude toward the other road just now is one of passive contempt, and they make the an nouncement that in the circular and rates the Seaboard Air Line has admitted that it is not able to compete with first class lines. No, the Southern will make no reductions” said Passenger Agent Hardwick. ‘‘lt cannot afford to place itself on a level with such cheap notoriety as the Seaboard wishes to obtain. We will maintain standing rates between New York and Atlanta. ■ The service given by the Southern is equal and in some respects ahead ol that on any other road in the coun try, and we will hold to present prices. ” The Southern people declare that the claim of the Seaboard Air Line that they should have through cars to New Orleans with the present dis paragement in time is foolish. They claim that no satisfactory arrange ment could be made —that if tried, it would prove in every way a dismal failure. To Cure a Cold in One Day. Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tab ets. A very pretty story on love and romance in circus life has come to light m connec tion with Cooper & Co’s show says the Columbus Enquirer-Sun. Every one who has admired the little trappese act*, ress, Maud Janiere. She is a perfect blond with black hair and large, brown eyes. She is exquistely formed and her appearance and demeanor arejvery differ ent to the bold manners of the average circus performer. The little lady, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Janiere and brothers George and . Walter, have been with Mr. Cooper for some time. Last year, when the show was here, Miss Janiere was only a child. She was a favorite with the audience then, as she is now, on account of her beauty and grace. The Janiere family are all acrobats and athletes. Another member of the show is Mr. Ed Mallett, who does the head ballancing Gc Id Medal. Highest Awards Diploma of Honor AWARDED TO A. K. He is a good looking young fellov, aid it was qui e natural that he should fall in love With the charming Miss ‘alaudie” as she is called. The two were of necessity thiown together con stantly and their friendship soon ripened into a warmer feeling. The youthful uess of young Mallet’s sweetheait was no bar to matrimony in his eyes, so a few days ago they were quietly' married, and now all is serene. Mr. Mallett and his bride are' spending their honey moon with the show in Columbus. Outside of members of the company only a few people have heard of the marriage, and those who have seen Miss Janiere in her performance on the trapese have not dreamed that she was a happy bride and not a mere child as she seems. . Lindale’* Celebrated Bachelor’s Club are en tertained In a Most Elaborate Manner, ‘‘The Ladies’ Aid Society of Lin dale” assisted by the beautiful andac complished young ladies of the coun try tendered the Bachelor’s club a grand ovation recently. After read ing the menu of the Bachelor’s ban quet, they decided to honor the‘‘Old Stags” with one of the best enter tainments that money could get. Mr. G. B. Holder tendered them the use of bis palatial residence and the parlors wei*e tastefully arranged for the enjoyment of the 4 unfortunate old men. Only a few select bachelors were present, composed of such dig nitaries as W. D. Aohord, Stearns, Mirk Dodd, Jolly Will Holder, and Henry Long. There were about twenty-five of the ‘‘Fairest of the Fair” present to try and gladden the hearts (if they have any) of this dis consolate set of men. McAchord as master of ceremonies had hismus tacbe (there .are 33 hairs in the bunch) waxed in splendid style and shoes polished a la .russet. Dodd and Stearns had on clean collars but no one could tell anything about their shirts, on account of the large cravats worn. • The menu was perfectly splendid, consisted of soup’ a la francaisse; meats, consisting of mutton, a la spring lamb, veal ala steer; cakes that were too nice to be put before man; ice cream, sherbets, fruits from the tropics to tempt the taste of the most fastidious. All present enjoyed the niep things so lavishily provided. Some of Mark Dodd’s best friends are uneasy about him, for fear he may have a relapse. In conclusion Mr. G. B. Holder sang, ‘‘l would not live always,—and be an old bachelor.” The pleasures of the occasion will be Jong remembered by your correspondent; for the many good things that were provided for the inner man. The bachelors all went home and one of them was troubled with palpitation of the heart. THE ROME TBIBUNE TUESDAY. OCTOBEB If) 1897. ROME EC WORTH LEIGUE.
