Bob Burdette Sayo u One Dollar Wheat Doca
Not Balance Five Cent Cotton ”
Robert J. Burdette, genial and
heartsome humorist, noted platform
orator and dispeller of “cerulean
mephistopheles” is now touring the
south on a lecturing tour. Burdette
forgets his role of fun producer long
enough now and then to utter keen
remarks upon current events.
While in Birmingham recently he
said to a crowd of admirers who had
congregated about him in one of the
hotels:]
•‘Prosperity is all in one part of the
country.
“One dollar wheat does not bal
ance five-cent cotton.
“But a man in my business has a
poor opportunity to guage prosperity.
Last winter was a very bard one on
other things, but I did not feel it so
much. The amusement world is al
ways fairly prosperous. A, man can
raise fifty cents to go to a show or cir
cus when he cannot raise it for any
other purpose.
“In the old days of lecture, thirty
years ago. a man went on the lecture
platform for some social or political
purpose, without any regard to money
making. He did not care.
“Now lecturing is mostly in a hu
morous vein and men follow it as a
pr of ession.”

LEE AND GORDON’S MILL.
The O*rt Pl«i,t to be Set in operation Under
Historic N.rui-,
A new company has been formed at
Chickamauga, Ga., of which Gordon
Lee is president and J. B Henderson
secretary and treasurer, to operate the
old-Lee & Gordon mill, at Chickamauga,
as a flouring mill, says the Chattanooga
Times of Sunday.
This will doubtless prove interesting
to residents of'this section, who have
known this historic mill only as a plaice
where corn was ground.
The Lee & Gordon mill has a history.
It was built before the war, and during
the battle of Chickamauga the ebb and
flow of the armies surged around it in
the tide of war. Since the war, and
likewise before, only coin was ground at
the Lee & Gordon mill, at first by a prim
itive process, but later in a more improv
ed and modern way. The company will
be known as the Lee & Gordon Mill
company. They have already ordered
the latest and bes‘, roller process ma
chinery, which will arrive Thursday.
As soon as the machinery arrives it will
be set up and the mill started in the
manufacture of flour. The company in
tend to sell their product throughout
Georgia, will doubtless find an excellent
market there for their wares.

JFor Electric Line.
A. M. Pennock, of the Western

motor of the scheme to operate an
electric railway <to the park over the
tracks of the Chattanooga, Rome and
Southern railway, has heard nothing
from the Westinghouse electrical peo
ple as to the cost of equipment. He
expects a letter today.
The Chattanooga Times yesterday
asternoon received a letter from Presi
dent C. B. Wilburn, of the Chatta
nooga, Rome and Southern, in which
he said:
“We have received a communica
tion from Chattanooga looking to the
use of our rails between Chattanooga
and Chickamauga for an electriot
line. These parties have not yet
made any detailed proposition, and
while the company is considering the
matter and will discuss the same
further, no definite conclusion has
been reached.”
A decision from the officials may be
expected in a few days.

Regiment From Fort Mcl’hersan Quartered
at Camp Lamont Chiekamaoqa.
A good many Chattanooga people
went down to Chickamauga Park yester
day to pay their respects to the 'officers
of the Fifth infantry, now in camp at
Camp Dan Lamont say the Chattanooga ;
Times of Sunday. The troops are now
comfortably settled, and the scarcity of
water has been obviated by hauling from
Chickamauga creek and several springs,
in that region.
The regiment was busily engaged yes
terday in a number of drills and military
evolutions. Targets were erected yester
day, and some practice shooting'will be
done next week. Today the soldiers and
officers will all be at leisure, Sunday be
ing even more of a day of rest with them
than with the average civilian.
A good many Chattanocgans will visit
the Park today and are certain to receive
a hearty welcome and hospitable recep
tion by the officers and soldiers, who are
without doubt, past masters in the art of
entertaining. Lieut. O’Brien assures all
who comesa good time.
