EYF, THE CAUSE OF THE FALL OF M\H
Powerful Discourse on Woman. and Her Re
lations to Man—Her Creation Evidently In
the Plans of the Creator of the Unive. se.
•
The rector, the Rev. C. B. Hudgins,,
began on last Sunday morning a series of
sermons on the women of the Bible.
At the midday service “Eve, the cause
of the Fall of Man” was the subject of
the sermon. At the night service, “De
borah and Joel—their great victory over
Sisera and his Powerful Army of Ca
naanites” was the subject of the sermon.
In the discourse of Eve, it was shown
that from the history and order of the
creation, it is naturally inferred that the
making of a woman was, on after thought,
in the plan .of the Creator. After He
had made everything else, and saw that
it was good, and because man was lonely
in the garden of Elen and needed a help
mate, “He made the woman and brought
her unto the man.”
The Creator did not choose to make
the first woman of the dust of the
ground, as He had made all the animals
of the field and the fowls of the air and
the first man. Evidently God did not
intend that this last of His created beings
should be an independent creature, else,
He, doubtless, would have also formed
her out of the ground as He did Adam.
But to make sure of her destiny—that
she should be for man, she was made of
him. And she was not made out of his
head to surpass him, nor from his feet
to be trampled upon, but from his side
to be his companion* and near his heart
to be dear to him. And the rib, which
the Lord God had taken from man,
made He a woman, and brought
her unto the man, and Adam
said: “This is now bone of my
bones, and flesh of my flesh,
she shall be called woman, because
sbe was taken out of man After God
found this the most beautiful of li is
creations. She did not sit on a bed of
roses, and adorn herself with flowers
or paint, powder or jewels, or braided
hair, or any vanities whatever, and
pensively await Adam’s coming.to
woo her with any nice little speeches
and presents and attentions of gal
lantry. But rather, she, at the com
mand of God, went to Adam, for she
knew, in her sweat, innocent, woman
ly heart for what she was made, viz,
to become a helpmeet, a loving com
panion for that lonely keeper of the
garden of Eden, and she immediately
went to make it -for him more of a
paradise. No bride and groom have
ever spent such a blissful honeymoor.
And no man and woman were ever
more congenial in thought, word and
deed. This was the true marriage
like that of which Lord Tennyson
says: “Lies nor equal, nor unequal,
each fulfils defect in each, and always
thought in thought, purpose in pur
pose, will in will, they grow. The sin
gle pure and perfect animal. The two
cell’d heart beating, with one full
stroke, Life.”
Alas! that two such happy, inno
cent souls should have had an enemy.

troubled the minds of the innumera

with a healthy mind in a healthy body,
is the best counselor and the best spur.
Many mothers are sickly, fretful, helpless
creatures tortured beyond endurance by
the pains of their own wrecked constitu
tions. An ambitious youth receives but
little encouragemertt or sound advice
who appeals to such a mother. Most ill
health among women is due to weakness
and disease of the organs distinctly femi
nine. If these parts are weak and dis
eased the entire system suffers.
The most wonderful remedy for all
weakness and disease of the distinctly fe
fnale organism is Dr. Pierce’s Favorite
Prescription. It allays inflammation,
soothes pain and imparts vigor and health
to these delicate organs. It makes
healthy mothers and capable wives. It
prepares a woman for motherhood. It
does away with the discomforts of the ex
pectant period and makes parturition
easy and almost painless. Over 90,000
women have testified to its virtues, in
writing. Druggists sell it.
“It is with pleasure 1 recommend Dr. Pierce’s
Favorite Prescription to suffering ladies.” writes
Mrs. J. Ferguson, Box 29. Douglas Station. Sel
kirk Co.. Manitoba. “ After suffering untold tor
tures! thani; God I found relief and cure in
Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription.”
It don’t pay—sickness. Constipation
often causes it. Dr. ‘Pierce’s Pleasant
Pellets cure constipation. One little
“Pellet” is a gentle laxative, and two
a mild cathartic. They never gripe.
They are tiny, sugar-coated granules,
forty of which are contained in a, two-inch
vial. Druggists sell them and have
nothing else “just as good." They reg

About a year ago I was advised by .a
friend to try Mrs. Pinkham's Sanative
Wash and Vegetable Compound, which
I did. After using three bottles of
the Vegetable Compound and one pack
age of Sanative Wash. I am now enjoy
ing better health than I ever did, and
attribute the same to your wonderful
remedies. I cannot find words to ex
press what a Godsend they have been
to me.
Whenever I begin to feel nervous and
ill, I know I have a never-failing phy
sician at hand. It would afford me
pleasure to know that my words had
directed some suffering sister to health
and strength through those most ex
cellent remedies. —Miss May Sachner,

and years past is the regret that that
dream-life was lost to them and con
sequently to us by their folly. That
it is to us a paradise lost. Woman the
glory of man became his ruin. She who
made I'fe so much more worth the
living, caused his death. By her the
immortal became the' mortal. The fallen
arch angel, the prince of darkness, with
all his subtlely could not entice Adam to
disobey God. So he turned from the
man to the woman, “the weaker vessel,”
as St Peter calls her, and seemed to un
derstand herna’ure, and disguised in the
form of an attractive serpent, pretended to
be a messenger of light to flatter and to
coax ner to partake of the forbidden
fruit in the Garden of Eden to satisfy
her appertite. No lack of beautiful foilage
and sweet flowers to be admired, but
she must needs look lovingly upon this
one forbidden tree. The tempter took
advantage of her desire to do that which
she was told not to do, and of her curi
osity to know good and evil, and of her
ambition to become as wise as God, ard
so he argued to induce her to disobey
God. And the story of the first disobe
dience of woman is briefly told in these
words. “And when the woman saw that
the tree was good for foo 1, and that it
was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be
desired to make one wise, she took of
the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave
also unto her husband with her, and be
did eat. • And the eyes of them both
were opened.”
St. Paul says “Adam was not de
ceived but the woman being deceived
was in the transgression.” Adam
knew full well the penalty of disobey
ing God. His beloved Eve must die
for her disobedience, and if so, be
would likewise disobey and die. He
preferred to be with her in sin and in
death rather than to be left alone
again even in paraaise. He loved her
better than he loved God, hence lis
fall. We know too well the sad con
sequence of the fall. The three-fold
curses brought upon themselves. The
serpent cursed “above all cattle, and
above every beast of the field, made
to crawl on its belly and to eat
dust all the days of its life, and to be
hated above all other creatures of the
earth. The woman to be a creature
of sorrows and suffering, a bearer of I
children, and to be ruled over by her
husband.
The man—“ Cursed is the ground
for thy sake, in sorrow shalt thou ear
of it all the days of his life. Thorns
also and thistles shall it bring forth
to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb
of the field. In the sweat of thy face
shalt thou eat bread, till thou return
unto the ground from whence thou
art taken. And God drove the man
and woman out of the garden of Eden
where they had been so happy ere
they sinned, to till the ground in sor
rowful labor and regret until they
they should return to it at death. By
the disobedience of the first woman
the living Adam became an ever dying
man. Yet life is perpetuated by her
in that she became the mother of all
living humanity, and she was prom
ised that her seed should bruise the
serpent’s head.
By her act of disobedience, sorrow,
suffering and death came upon her and all
her descendants. Yet by her Son, born
in due time of the blessed Virgin Mary,
shall all be made alive forevermore. For
since by man come death, by man come
also the resurrection of the dead. For
as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall
all be made alive.” * * * *

any such monstrocity as the “new wo
man” of these latter days. The Chris
tian religion, from the first apostolic
times to our own day, teaches, as in the
words of St. Paul—“that the head of
every man is Christ; and the head of the
woman is the man, and the head of Christ
is God. Man is the image and glory of
God ; but the woman is the glory of msr.
For the man is not of the woman, but
the wo m an of the man. Neither was the
man created for the woman, but the wo
m«n for the man.” Likewise the Chris
tian religion teaches woman to adorn
themselves in modest apparel, with
shamefacedness and sobriety and good
works. Not the outward adorning of
planing the hair, and of wearing of gold,
or of putting on of apparel. But let it
be the hidden man of the heart in that
which Is not corruptible, even the orna
ment of a meek and quiet spirit which is
in the sight of God of great price. For
afrer this manner in the old time the
holy wonu>n also who trusted in God.
adorned themselves, being in subjection
to their own husbands. And so the
husbands are also divinely commanded
to dwell with their wives lovingly and
constantly according to their Christian
knowledge of the binding sanctity
of marriage, “giving honor unto the
wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as
being heirs together of the grace of life;
that their progress be not hindered,”

Figures From the Annual Report of the
Southern Railway Company.
The earnings of the Southern rail
way for the year ending June 30, 1897
and of which a report has just been
issued, are causing much favorable
discussion. The big system has dona
well and its report is fully satisfactory
to all interested.
During the year the company in
creased its average "operated mileage
from 4,574 miles to 4,806. The income
account shows gross, receipts of $19,-
082,547; not traffic earnings of $5,219 -

The balance carried to profit and loss
was $556,448.
Comparing the balance sheets of
1894 and 1897, cost of road, June 30,
1897. stated as $254,132,545, an increase

stands at $11,467,454, against Sil 323.-

pledged and also including $412,465
ot deferred but secured bills receiva
ble, an item which does not appear
in the 1896 report. Material on band
is valued at $958,000. Current assets
are $4,168,342, which includes $2,177,
cash held by treasurer and by finan
cial agents. As compared with 1796

rent assets. Current liabilities have
decreased $425 000. J
The Southern constantly grows
larger and more powerful, but it is a
system which uses its power well
and always gives its patrons the best
of everything.
