IT GIVES TROUBLE
Railroad Authorities Are Having a Se
rlrus Time Running
ALABAMA C USES IRCONYENIENGts
That State Has All Kinds of Quarantine
Regulations and Some of Them
Rather Ludlcious.
‘‘l don’t believe a civil war could
complicate the railroad situation more
than the various quarantine regula
tions between here and Montgomery
have made it, - ’ said Superintendent
Epperson to a Macon Telegraph re
porter-
“It has actually got to the point
■where every station on the system is
a terminal point and when you start
a train out you don’t know how far
it’s going before it is stopped, or how
far it will be made to go before it is
allowed to stop,” continued Mr. Ep
person “Sometimes we will get tele
grams telling us everything is all right
at such and such a point, but before
a train gets there we may get another
telegram announcing a change, Mr.
Comer has gone down the road to
see what be can do about it, but
from what I can learn the people over
in Alabama are so wrought up that
they will pay no attention to Mr,
Comer or anybody else. The president
of the United States could do no more
just at this stage of the game than a
Digger Indian.’
While Mr. Epperson was talking,
Chief Clerk Johnson held up a stack
of telegrams about a foot thick and
said they were all received yesterday
and had bearing on the quarantine
regulations at the various points.
Other telegrams were being received
almost every minute.
While the reporter w’as in the office
a telegram'came from tbesection mas
ter at Union Springs, saying that he
had been stopped from running
through the town on his crank car.
The telegram concluded by saying
4 -I’m going to Eufaula tonight if 1
can get there,”
Another telegram contained a copy
of an order issued by the mayor of
Ozark, Ala. It said: “No tramps will
be allowed to enter Ozark on passen
ger trains.”
One of the conductors sent in a
complaint that he attempted to stop
his train while going through one of
the counties in Alabama to keep from
running into a heard of cattle, but a
quarantine officer on.the tram refused
to let him do so, saying that he had
instructions to prevent any train from
stopping in that county, and be pro
posed to obey orders.
At some of the stations armed
posses meet every train to see that it.
does not stop. Many of the counties !
have quarantined against adjoining |
counties and nobody is allowed to go I
from one to the other. In one in
stance the county outside the corpor
ate limits of town and the people are
shut in on every side. Some of thej
Southwestern’s train crews are cutoff
from work by quarantine and the
force has been so badly crippled that
Trainmaster Jesse Hall is acting as
conductor, and Filing Clerk Marion
Ramsey of the superintendent’s office
is running as baggage master.
When a Telegraph reporter stepped
into Passenger Agent Dawson’s office
yesterday, he tound Mr. Dawson’s
pleasant face wearing a careworn and
serious look. When asked the cause of
the trouble, he muttered “quarantine”
in a manner that spoke volumes. - By
Mr. Dawson’s side was a huge pile of
telegrams, and when asked what it all
meant, he said it was all about quaran
tine. While the reporter was talking to
Mr, Dawson, a telegram came, saying:
‘ ‘Town of Pee Wee has modified quar
antine regulations so that trains need
not run at a greater speed thau thirty
miles an hour, while passing there,’’
That’s a fair specimen of the way the
thing works,” said Mr. Dawson, and
you can understand that it is no joke

FIBROID lUMOB
Expelled by Lydia H. Pinkham’*
Vegetable Compound.
% T
Interview With Mn. B. A. Lombard.
I have reason to think that I would
not be here now if it had not been for
Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Com
pound. It cured me of a fibroid tumor
in my womb.
Doctors could do nothing for me, and
they could not cure me at the hospital.
I will tell you about it:
1 had been in my usual health, but
had worked quite hard. When my
monthly period came on, I flowed very
badly. The doctor gave me medicine,
but it did me no good. He said the
flow must be stopped if possible, and
he must find the cause of my trouble.
• Upon examination, he found there
was a Fibroid Tumor in my womb, and
gave me treatment without any benefit
whatever. About that time a lady
called on me, and recommended Lydia
E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound,
said she owed her life to it. I
said I would try it, and did. Soon
after the flow became more natural and
regular. I still continued taking the
Compound for some time. Then the
doctor made an examination again,
and found everything all right. The
tumor had passed away and that dull
ache was gone.— Mbs. B. A. Lombard,

A LENGTHY TRIAL.
jLuetgert’s Hearing Has Taken Over 50
Days. About One Week Here.
For seven weeks the trial of Adolphus
Luetgert, the wealthy Chicago sausage
maker, who is charged with murder
ing his wife, has dragged its weary
length along.
The newspapers have printed hundreds
of columns about it, and the public be
gan to wonder wh«n it would end.
Judge W. M. Henry of this city, in
speaking of the Luetgert trial the other
day said:
“They take their own time over such
cases up there. They spend days on
points, which would be exhausted here
in a very short time. I daresay if that
same case had been tried before any
Judge of the Superior court in Georgia
it would not have consumed over a week
or ten days at the outside.”
By the way, it is a commonly accepted
idea that criminal cases are the most
wearing on the judges, but such is not
case, according to Judge Henry. He
says.
“I had rather try criminal cases in
preference to civil business any time.
Outside of the distressing and often
dramatic parts of a criminal trial, they
are not half so wearing on a judge as
civil cases. Any judge, I believe, will
bear me out in this.”

THE ROME TRIBUNE FRIDAY. OCTOBER 22
WITL START FRIDAY.
The Fifth Regiment Will Begin the
Long March Back to Atlanta.
Despite the rainy weather, the “boys
in blue” encamped at Chicamauga
Park are having a good time. Every day
there are from fifty to one hundred of
them in the city seeing the sights. A
large crowd of the men who have never
seen the mountain go up every day.
The command will probably not come to
town during their stay, but will start
on the homeward march Friday, and
it will take them as many days to re
turn as it did to make the trip up.
Col. Cook and other officers are en
joying the outdoor life that they are
having and will return to Fort McPher
son very much improved. When they
return to Atlanta they will be given a
signal honor by the Fifth regiment,
Georgia volunteers.
The Atlanta Constitution to-day says
they will meet Uncle Sam’s boys at
the city limits and escort them thorough
the city. The Fifth infantry has not
yet been notified as to the intentions of
the Georgia soldiers, but Col. Cook will
be communicated with before he arrives
in the city and asked if such an ovation
will be agreeable to him and his fellow
officers.
It is expected that the whole of the
Fifth regiment of Georgia troops will
join in this occasion with the full band,
and as the United States soldiers come
in sight they will play a martial air.
Col. Candler will send out an orderly to
the commander of the Fifth United
States‘regiment and presenting his com
pliments will ask permission to welcome
them and escort them into the city.
This will be granted and the two regi
ments will march through the .streets
with two bands and, many flags of the
regiments flying to the winds. It will
be a graceful compliment to the fighting
Fifth and it will make a beautiful sight
to see the two bodies of men going along
the streets.

In Meinoriam.
It is with sadness that we chronicle the
death of our lovely, Christian friend,
Verna Irene Alleman, whose short, yet
beautiful life, was filled with deeds of I
love and earnest devotion to duty. She
was born in Millersburg, Dauphin Co.,
Pa., March 4th, 1877, was converted to
God at the age of 15 years and be
came a member of the Evangelical
chuich. In the year 1895, together with
her parents, John M. and Mary E. Alle
man, she moved to the city of Knoxville,
Tenn., and the following year to Lindale,
Georgia.
It was on the morning of October 13th,
1897, after an illness of 19 days, that the
voice of our friend was hushed on earth,
and the spirit, obedient to the commands
of the Master, took its flight into the
regions of light. and life eternal. At
that sad hour many hearts were bowed in
grief, because she, whom we loved, had
passed from our sight forever. And
while we mourn for our departed friend,
we also bow in humble submission to the
will of Him, who doeth all things well,
believing that our loss is heaven’s gain.
That she was prepared to meet her
Savior in peace, was evidenced by her
answer to her mother’s question, “Are
you prepared?’’ Quickly is made the
answer, ‘Do not grieve for me, all is
well.”
While we are not permitted to walk
any more on earth beside her, we rejoice
in the belief that she has obtained a
glorious entrance into the city that hath
foundations, whose maker and builder is
God. We extend to the bereaved family
our heartfelt tympathy in this their sad
affliction. A Fbiend.

Something About the New Discovery for
Curing Dyspepsia.
The Rev. F. 1, Bel), a highly es
teemed minister residing in Weed
sport, Cayuga Co., N. Y„ in a recent
letter writes as follows: “There has
never been anything that I have taken
that has relieved the Dyspepsia from
which I have suffered for. ten .years
except the new remedy called Stuart’s
Dyspepsia Tablets Since taking them
I have had no distress at all after eat
ing and again after long years can
sleep well Rev. F. I. Bell, Weeds
port, N. Y., formerly Idalia. Colo.,
Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets is a re
markable remedy, not only because it
is a certain cure for all forms of indi
gestion, but because it seems to act as
thoroughly in old chronic cases of
Dyspepsia as well as in mild attacks
of indigestion or biliousness. A person
has dyspepsia simply because the
stomach is overworked, all it wants is
a harmless, vegetable remedy to di
gest the food and thus give it the
much needed rest.
This is the secret of the success of
this peculiar remedy. No matter how
weak or how much disordered the
digestion may be, Stuart’s Dyspepsia
Tablets will digest the food whether
the stomach works or not. New life
and energy is given not only to the
stomach but to every organ and nerve
in the body. A trial of this splendid
medicine will convince the most skep
tical that Dyspepsia and all stomach
troubles can be cured. The tablets are
prepared by the Stuart Chemical Co.,
of Marshall, Mich., but so popular has
the remedy become that Stuart’s Dys
pepsia Tablets can now be obtained at
any drugstore at 50 cents per package.

Peoria, Ills., Oct. 21. —The charges
