POPTT forget the . LOHG DISTAHCE TELEPHONE. TO MOVE NORMAL SCHOOL. 'Chairman Brown’s Report to the Legis lature Will So Recommend. Atlanta, Oct. 20. - It is stated hero upon what ought to be reliable in forma tion, that Hon. Pope Brown, chairman of the university investigation commit tee of the house, will make a report in favor of using tha present buildings of the State Normal School at Athens for an agricultural college, provided the normal school can find a location some where else. Mr. Brown is opposed to the use of the land script fund by the university while the agricultural college, which is entitled to the money, is a farce. He thinks that the state is being done a great injustice in this, and his report will call for a radical change. The present agricultural college, supposed to exist as a part of the university, is only a sub ject for ridicule, and Mr. Brown says the farming interest of the state is entitled to the benefits of a real college for the teaching of agriculture as a science. Mn Brown and Dr. J. B. Hunnicutt, professor of agriculture in the university, have been engaged in preparing the re port to be made to the legislature for several days and neither will discuss its contents, however. But, as stated, the information is that this plan proposed will be to take the normal school prop erty for the agricultural college and let that institution be moved to Atlanta and located in-the old soldiers’ home 'build ing or elsewhere. It is understood that b >th trustees and faculty of the . normal college would be glad of any change and they will probably give the plan their support, although it is sure to cause s red hot fight in the legislature, both on the proposition to take the land script fund away from the university and the removal of the normal school. A Story of Early “Finds** of Gold in The Savannah River. The discove-y of gold in the Savannah river bottom some distance west of the city last summer and the recent talk of ore found in other near-by localities has stirred up the mining fever among a good many who would rather dig gold out of the sand of the Georgia and South Car olina lowlands than brave the terrors of Chilkat pass and a winter in the Klon dike says the Savannah News. Dr. Arno Knorr’s discovery of gold in the sand of the Savannah river a few months ago resulted in a mild effort on the part of others at pan washing along the banks of the river, but the gold didn’t pan out and the excitement among those who tried it subsided. Mr. Joshua Martin of Whigham writes ' the Morning News a possible explanation Many women X LiT/ have good reason Hill to dread the ap- P roacll of the hour of mater-. ■B' ?l' nity. They know that there is a sure and safe cure for all weakness and disease of these organs. Over 90,000 of these women have 4 testified in writing to the virtues of Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription. It is the discovery of Dr. R. V. Pierce, a regularly graduated physician and an eminent and skillful specialist, who : s and for thirty years has been chief consulting physician to the Invalids’ Hotel and Sur gical Institute, at Buffalo, N. Y. The “Favorite Prescription” makes the or gans of womanhood strong and healthy. It cures all weakness and disease/ It pre pares for approaching maternity. It does away with the discomforts of the expect ant period. It alleviates the pains of par turition and makes baby’s advent easy and safe. Druggists sell more of it than of all other remedies for these troubles combined. Woman should know herself. She should not be dependent in every emergency, great and .mall, upon a physician. She should be familiar •with her own physical make-up. Dr. Pierce's Common Sense Medical Adviser will reveal a world of important truths to the woman who is ignorant upon these points. It contains many chapters and illustrations devoted to the repro ductive physiology of women. It is written in elain, straightforward language. The book con lins over 1,008 pages. A Spanish company prospected along the river during the colonization of South Carolina for gold and silver, or by dredg ing the bottom of the river, secured gold in considerab e quantics. The metal was afterwards roughly coined. Being in vaded by enemies the Spanish clung to their gold, which was kept in a trunk until they were in danger of defeat, when they threw it into the river. Mr. Martin says he has heard the story often from his grandparents, who were among the first settlers of that section. The story is told of a fisherman, whose hook caught into the trunk and pul ed off one of the handles. The story of the finding of the gold by the Spanish is given as a .possible expla nation of the more recent discoveries. Did You Ever Try Electric Bitters as a remedy for your troubles? DIRECTOR GENERAL’S DAY. Large Attendance at the Tenues.ee Cen teniilal Bij Sham Battle. 'Nashville, Oct. 21.—There was a large attendance at the Centennial ex position, the occasion being the celebra tion of Director General’s day. The public and private schools were closed in honor of the day and thousands of children were present. The festivities were opened with the firing of a salute of 13 guns on military field. This was followed by a spectacu lar parade, a horse show limited to thoroughbreds from the best stock farms in the state, and a cattle show limited to blooded cattie. An exhibition of ponies and several pony races came next. The next event was a splendid mili tary parade within the exposition grounds. In the parade were the Third cavalry. Virginia military institute ca dets, Alabama troops, confederate vet erans, Porter rifles and several com panies of the National guard of Tennes see. A reproduction of the battle of Gettysburg was then given, all the troops mentioned taking part. A reception was afterwards given at the Woman’s building by the woman’s board in honor of the director general, E. O. Lewis, and Mrs. Lewis. At night there was an unusually fine display of fireworks, including a reproduction of the battle between the Monitor and Merrimac, on Lake Watauga. A grand conceit in 'the Auditorium closed the day’s program. Major HhhUjf >erh»U4ly 111. Paris, Oct. 21. Major Moses P. Strange ''hooting Scrape on the Street* o( the Little Georgia City. Newnan, Ga., Oct. 21. —An unusual tragedy was enacted here. Shortly after 8 o’clock three pistol shots were fired, and Garr Pinson was found lying on the sidewalk with a bullet hole in his right temple. Biood was flowing in a steady stream from the wound, and the young man soon died. The only witness to the tragedy was Luther Fuller, a compan ion and friend of the young man, who made the following statement regarding the killing: Pinson and Fuller were together, when suddenly Pinson drew a pistol from his hip pocket and told Faller he intended to kill him (Fuller). Fuller says he caught Pinson and endeavored to prevent him from using the pistol, but that Pinson finally twisted bis hand around and fired at him point blank, the ball passing through his (Fuller’s) clothing and making a slight flesh wound in the left side. Fuller says that when he felt the shot he broke away and that Pitison fired two more shots, both of which he supposed were aimed at him (Fuller). He offers no other theory of the kill ing than that Pinson himself fired the fatal shot that took away his tife. Fuller has been placed under arrest and will be held for examination. Both young men belong to excellent families. There is much excitement over tho affair. The cars in front of the burning tanks were uncoupled and pulled into New Albany. The explosion was terrific, and was heard for several miles.
