FOBMALDEHYI) GAS
\
Tiie Marveloas Powers of This Govirn
ment Disinfectant Agent.
HOW THE GAS IS GENERATED
Generating Lamp is Simple—Formal-
<lehyd is the Greatest Antiseptic and
Germicide Known to Science.
Formaldehyd is a gas and is generated
by the slow and imperfect combustion of
methyl, commonly called wood alcohol.
Methyl is what is known as the first of
the paraffin senes of chemicals and its
CH3O. If this be burned where it can get
plenty of air and the combustion be
complete it will simply resolve itself into
CO2, commonly known as carbonic acid,
and H2O, commonly known as water;
but if the combustion be slow and in
complete there will be formed CH2 02,
which is known to science as formaldehyd,
and there will be absorbed from the sur
rounding air enough of other chemicals
to form carbonic acid and water, which
will be thrown off.
The lamp for the generation of the
formidehyd is an exceedingly simple as
fair. In the first place, there is a pan
some eighteen inches wide, and raised
in the center of this there is mineral wool
covered with wire netting. Above this
there is a sheet iron cylinder having a
row of small holes six inches from the
bottom and capped by a funnel, the
point being up. The cylinder is two
feet high. Water is poured into the
surrounding pan so that there will be
no danger of fire, and the wood alcohol
is poured upon the mineral wool. This
mineral wool is for no other purpose
than to allow the alcohol to burn slowly.
Any other porous substance which will
not burn would answer the same pur •
pose. When the alcohol is well under
way the cylinder is put on it and the
funnel on that. The small amount of
air that comes into the cylinder through
the small holes will prevent the alcohol
from burning freely, and that will pro
duce the result previously stated. A
small blue flame appears at the small
holes and the top of the funnel gives out
the greatest antiseptic and germicide
known to science.
While the formaldehyd is the great
est antiseptic known be com
monly used In the way that the ordi
nary person uses a disinfectant to i
dense a wound or sore. It has a
strong, irritating effect, and in that
way can be used only when diluted to
one part of formaldehyd to 20,000 of
water. Its inhalation is dangerous only
in large quantities, and then it attacks
the mucous membrane violently. But
for its purpose as a germicide, or kill
er of all germs known, there is noth
ing to compare with it. Under a di
rect exposure it has killed germs of
diptheria in thirty seconds. Its other
great quality making it of such great
service in disinfecting matter is that
it possesses a power of penetration
unknown to other substances and
hardly to be believed. Dr. Geddings,
of the United States Marine Hospital
service experimental station at W ash_
ington has done a great deal of inves
tigating along these lines, and gave
formaldehyd the strongest test that
its power of penetration has ever had.
He took pyogenic cocci, commonly
known as the germs of pus in wounds
or sores, placed then! in an envelope,
coated it thoroughly with paraffine,
so that it was completely air tight,
and then wrapped it in a blanket.
This was subjected to formaldehyd
for twelve hours, and in a number of
instances the germs were killed when
he opened the envelope. Without
the several wrapping the germs were
killed in every instance in a short
time.
It is for these reasons that the service
does not think it is necessary to perforate
the mails before subjecting them to the
formaldehyd, and one who reads what is
positively known of the unfailing power
of the gas, as previously stated, can not
think for a moment that it would not

Judge Frank Ives of District Court
of Crookston, Minn., says: For some
time I have used Stuart’s Dyspepsia
Tablets with seeming great benefit,
with few exceptions. I have not been
s« free from indigestion in twenty-five
years.
George W. Roosevelt, U. S Consul
to Brussells, Belgium: Stuart’s Dys
pepsia Tablets, safe, pleasant to take,
convenient to carry, give keen appe
tite, perfect digestion.
Mr. W. D. Tomlin, Mechanical En
gineer, Duluth, Minn: One box of
Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets has done
its work and I am again gaining flesh
and strength.
O. E. Ransom, Hustonville, Ky.: I
was distressed and annoyed for two
years with throwing up food, often
two or three times a day; had no cer
tainty of retaining a meal if I ate one.
Four boxes of the tablets from my
druggist have fully cured me. I find
them pleasant to take, convenient to
carry.
Rev. G, D. Brown, Mondovi, Wis.:
The effect of Stuart’s Dyspepsia
Tablets is simply marvelous; a quite
hearty dinner of broiled beef steak
causes no distress since I began their
use.
Over six thousand people in the state
of Michigan alone in 1894 were cured
of stomach troubles by Stuart’s Dys

SCHOONERS IN A STORM,
Heavy Wind Blowing' Along the Coant
and the •*’«» Is Very High.
Delaware Breakwater, Del., Oct.
26.—The storm on the coast hereabouts
continues with but little abatement.
The wind is blowing at the rate of 35
miles an hour and the sea is very high.
The schooner Elizabeth Lee was
driven ashore on the point of Cape Hen
lopen and went to pieces. Her cargo of
coal is a total loss. An unknown
steamer grounded on Hen and Chicken
shoals, but floated about half an hour
later unassisted.
The schooner Sarah J. Vaughan,
bound from Philadelphia for Norfolk,
with 350 tons of coal, ran ashore on the
beach at the breakwater and broke
amidships. The schooner Lillie Falken
berg, bound from Suffolk to New York,
with lumber, is high on the beach, ap
parently in good condition. The
schooner H. W. Laws, coal laden, ashore
at Lewes, is in a bad condition.
A number of schooners and other
smaller craft are riding the sea, and
will probably safely weather the storm.
No lives have thus far been lost. The
two lifesaving crews have done noble
work, dozens of sailors having been
rescued from stranded vessels by means
of the breeches buoys.

BUTLER CALLED A BOSS.
Senator Denounced at the Hearing of tbr
Feareo«t> IVllmoii Sult.
Raleigh, Oct. 26.—1 n the superior
court here the hearing began in the suit
. of John H. Pearson against Railway
Commissioner Otho Wilson. Pearson
was appointed commissioner by Gov
ernor Russell when the latter sought to
suspend Wilson Many lawyers are en
gaged and Wilsou’s lawyers declared in
their (argument that this whole business
is for political ends ami that some law
yers who are aiding the governor in
fighting the railways are aiding Pear
son in this case.
Senator Butler, by whose advice the
governor removed Wiisou, was de
nounced. as the greatest boss North
Carolina has ever known. The case at
tracts much attention. If it goes against
Wilson he wiil appeal as far as the
United States supreme court. The
argument is that an act passed after the
act creating the commission, clothed it
with the powers of a court, and that,
therefore, the only means of the re
moval of commissioner is by legislative
impeachment, as in the case of judges.
It is charged that Governor Russell
and others are planning to form a po
litical party on the basis of lower rail
way rates.
