A WORD WITH YOU!
If you have money or credit use it
t j buy some of the goods we offer
for less than their worth in the
largest market in the world today.
Cross. & Blackwell’s mixed
pickles, quart bottles for 25 cents.
Regular price 40 to 50 cents. Large
olives, never sold for less than 3
cents at 25 cents the bottle. We
have only a small lot of the above
goods that will be sold at above
prices and if you know anything
about their value you will know
that they are bargains. Under the
head of bargains will come our
brooms, the price of which has been
cut on them all except the ten cent
size. Then comes toilet soap on
which we have cut the price 20 per
cent on a'l grades that sells at 5 J
cents the box and less; which makes
the price of that at ten cents the
box 8 cents and 25 cents soap for 20
cents, 50 cents soap for 40 cents the
box, <fcc.
PRESERVES.
In this line we have the best
goods that can be made of sugar
and fruit. They are pure and noth
ing can be said in their praise that
the goods do not merit. McMechin’s
preserved figs at 25 cents the jar,
preserves all kinds, ten cents the
can. Jelly 23 cents the bucket.
Roqueford cheese 15 cents the jar,
sold everywhere at 25 cents.
TETLEY’S TEAS.
There isn’t any other “just like
it.” It stands alone in the dignity
of purity, excellence of flavor and
reputation. Never t< uched but once
with the hand and that in picking.
Machinery does the balance. Think
of the Chinese hands, never too
clean, compare Chinese Teas in
flavor and strength with Tetley’s
and you will never have any but
Tetley’s.
COFFEE
If you want it at ten cents the
pound we have it. If you want the
finest product of the earth we have
that. If you buy coffee from us it
shall be better value for the money
than you can get elsewhere or you
get your money back. Our Q & Q.
coffee roasted and put up in three
pound cans is the best that money
can buy. Try one can of it for sl,
and if yon are any judge of coffee
and you do not say it is the best
that ever come to Rome then you
shall h.veyour dollar and the coffee
too.
flour
Hand’s Best does make more
bread, cleaner bread, and whiter
bread, than any flour on this market.
Other merchants could buy as good
flour if they knew where to get it
and would buy a high price 1 flour
and sell is at a price to compete
with us, Buy the best you can find
at other stores, take a sack of
Hand’s Best, test them side by side
and if you get any good as our
brand, then we will give you a bar
rel.

Not Over 1,200 People Have Left Selma
altogether.
NOT EXCEEDING 100 IN THE HILL CITY
E. A. Neel, a Well Known Railroad Man
From ;Selma Talks Intelligently of
the Situation.
Mr. Edward A. Niel, general freight
and passenger agent of the Mobile and
Birmingham railroad at Selma, is one of
the refugees from that city stopping in
Home.
All trains on his road have been sus
pended and traffic is at a standstill.
Though he apprehended no danger, Mr.
Niel decided to take all precautionary
methods necessary, so came to Rome
with tis wife and two children. While
here he attends to all business in Capt.
Seay’s office in the Armstrong building.
Relative to the exodus from Selma, and
the fever situation he said to a Tribune
reporter yesterday:
“The press dispatches and reports in
outside papers have been grossly exag
gerated in regard to the number of peo
ple who have left Selma. On the first
train to leave, which rolled into Rome
Sunday evening, there were 558 people
by actual count. Os this number
probably 125 stopped in Rome for the
night, but the majority of those left the
pext morning for Nashville and j.oii ts
north. About 150 left that Sunday night
for Atlanta, and next day 57 more went
around by Montgomery.
“The reports that hundreds went into
Atlanta is absurd, as of the 1,200 people
who left Selma the great majority of
them went north, mainly to Tennessee
towns. I know that there is not one
hundred Selma people in Rome now.
And all here are people from a section of
Selma remote from where the fever
developed.”
A few weeks ago the editor was taken
with a very severe cold that caused him
to be in a most miserable condition. It
was undoubtedly a bad case of la grippe
and recognizing it as dangerous he took
immediate steps to bring about a speedy
cure. From the advertisement of Cham
berlain’s Cough Remedy and the many
good recommendations included therin,
we concluded to make a first trial of the
medicine. To say that it was satisfac
tory in its results, is putting it very
mildly, indeed. It acted like magic
and the result was a speedy and perma
nent cure. We have no hesitancy in
recommending this excellent Cough
Remedy to anyone afflicted with a cough
or cold in any form.—The Banner of
Liberty, Libertytown, Maryland. The

NO TRAINS TO SELMA.
Alabama Division of Southern Only Runs
to Birmingham Junction.
The Southern passenger train between
Rome and Selma, no longer runs into
Selma, but only to Birmingham Junction.
This is 29 miles south of Anniston.
The last train left Selma Monday
morning. The regular crew which
brought in the train has been laid off
for ten days, and a freight crew is in
charge. Conductor Seward, Flagman
Lanham and the other regular men are
all in Rome and will be here for several
days idle. The Alabama quarantine
authorities will not allow the last train
crew from Selma to enter that state, and
yet the quarantine officers who watch
the trains at Rome on the Alabama divis
ion of the Southern railway spend their
nights in this city, and possibly sleep in
the same houses with Selma refugees.
Why are they permitted to ride back
and forth into Alabama?
Conductor Ab Pittner was not caught
by the quarantine and continues to run.
Conductor Smith, of the freight service
has taken Conductor Seward’s place.
At Cave Spring there are about eigh
teen refugees, including some of Selma’s
WHAT IT INDICATES.
Nothing so interferes with one’s plans
or ambition like sickness or poor health.
Have you ever thought that your kid
neys may be the cause of your sickness ?
You can easily find out by setting aside
your urine for twenty four hours; a sed
iment or settling indicates an unhealthy
condition of the kidneys. When urine
stains linen it is evidence of kidney
trouble. Too frequent desire to urinate
or pain in the back, is also convincing
proof that the kidneys and bladder are
out of order.
It is a source of comfort to know that
Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-Root is the great
remedy for all kidney and bladder com
plaints. It relieves pain, stitch or dull
aching in the back, difficult or painful
urination, frequent desire to urinate,
scalding or pain in passing it, and quick
ly overcomes that unpleasant necessity
of being compelled to get up many times
during tne night. The mild and extra
ordinary effect of Swamp Root is soon
realized. Its action is gentle, yet im
mediate, the relief speedy and the cures
permanent. At druggists fifty cents
and one dollar. You may have a sam
pie bottle and pamphlet, both sent free
by mail. Mention the Rome Tribune,
and send your address to Dr. Kilmer <S
