DEMOCRATIC GAINS. 1
(Continued from Pagel,) |
they wm not haVe a majority in the
senate, which will prevent the passage
ot what 1 are known as “rippers” or any
partisan legislation.
The Republicans claim 17 of the
36 senators, with 18 conceded to the
Democrats and one doubtful. They
claim 67 members of the house, con
ceding 48 to the Democrats, with four
in .doubt. If the Democrats should se
cure all of these five doubtful members,
the Republicans stftl claim a majority
of two on joint ballot.
In the event of the Republicans con
trolling the legislature, it is conceded
that Senator Marcus A. Hanna of
Cleveland will be returned to the sen
ate. In the event of the Democrats
coatrolling the legislature, it is almost
equally certain that John R. McLean
will be made senator.
The residence of the former, in Cleve
land, and of the latter, in Cincinnati,
are in constant communication with
their respective headquarters in this
city.
Allen O. Myers of ‘the Democratic
■tate headquarters says: . \
"Not one of the fusion Cincinnati
ticket will vote for Hanna. A Repub
lican says two Republican representa
tives elected will not vote for Hanna.
He can be elected without them if the
Republicans have 74 on joint ballot, as
now claimed. ”
The following.statement of the situa
tion in Ohio has been made by Mr. J.
R. McLean, upon request:
“The Democrats believe that they
have elected the state and legislative
ticket An honest return Will show it”
REPUBLICANS CARRY IOWA.
The Democrat* Concede Election
by Over Fifteen Tii<>U9Hnd. i
Des Moines, Nov. 3.—Returns were*
•low in reaching headquarters of the
state central committee. Chairman
McMillin of the Republican committee
contends that Shaw’s plurality will
reach more than 30,000. Reports from
SO counties give show a plurality of 20,-
230 aud estimates of the Republican
committee is that the other 4b will do
as well.
It is expected by Chairman McMillin «
tjiat the plurality will reach at least
12,000 to 14,000 more when returns are
received frofn the entire state. As to
the legislature, the Republicans claim
63 in the house, out of 100, aud 40 out
of 50 in the enate.
Chairman McMillin’s estimate of the
tote is:
Republicans, 230,000; Democratic,
200.000; Prohibition, 7,000; gold Demo
cratic, 5,000; Populist, 3,000.
The returns at first showed a net Dem
ocratic gaTn of 32 to a precinct. Later
this was reduced to Returns at
first showed 19.000 plurality for Shaw,
an average Democratic gain of 400 per
county. This was reduced later to an
average of 30Z to a county.
The Democratic state committee con
cedes Shaw’s election by 16,000, but
gains are claimed in the legislature.
Chairman Walsh admits that there will
be 39 Republicans in the senate, count
ing the newly elected members and
holdovers. The Democrats claim 38
members of the house and the Republi
cans concede them 87.
GREAT DEMOCRATIC GAINS.
Republicau L>att<i<tlide* <»f Past Year* In
New York State Keteried,
Albany, Nov. 3.—The completed re
turns from the state demonstrate that
the Rebublican landslides of the past
two years have been reversed, if not by
giving as large a majority for the Dem
ocrats at least changing something like
240,000 votes. Governor Black’s plu
rality in the state last year was over
200,000. John Palmer, the Republican
secretary of state, won the year previ
ous by over 100,000. The indications
are that these enormous pluralities have
been swept away and a reverse plural
ity of between 80,000 aud 50,000 is
given.
The greatest surprises of the returns
are the great gains made in the ossem-
TRE STAR OF HOPE. ’
1“ I had lost all
hope and gone to
my father’s to die,”
said Mrs. Molie
Evans, of Mound,
Coryell Co., Texas.
“I gave birth to a
baby a year ago, the
sth of June last,”
she adds, “and
seemed to do very
well for 8 or 9 days,
and then I began to
feel very bad, my
feet began to swell,
my stomach was all
wrong and I seemed
to suffer with every
thing that could be
borne. I was in bed
5 months and there
was not a day that it
seemed I could live.
We had the best
doctors that our
country afforded. I
was a skeleton.
Every one that saw
me thought that I
would never get
well. I had palpita
tion and pain in the heart, terrible pain in
my right side just under the ribs, terrible
headaches all the time a bearing down
sensation ; a distressed feeling in my stom
ach all the time ; could hardly eat anything
and it looked as if I would starve. All the
time I would take such weak trembling
spells, and it seemed as if I could not stand
it. There were six doctors treating me
when I commenced taking your medicine.
I had lost all hope and gone to my father’s
to die. I commenced taking Dr.' Pierce’s
Golden Medical Discovery and his ‘ Fa
vorite Prescription ’ together, and I took
them regularly until I. felt as if life was
worth living again.”
“ I weigh more than I have weighed for
ten years. My friends say that I look better
than they ever saw me. The first two bot
tles did me more good than all the medicine
I had taken. My stomach has never hurt
me since. I can eat anything I want and as
much as I want. If you want to use this in
favor of your medicine, I am a living wit
ness to testify to it, and will, to anybody
who wants to know further of my case.”

bly by the Democrats, many of them
being in counties and districts where
there was no expectation ou the part of
Democratic managers of winning. Re
publicans explain these gains by at
tributing them to the heated municipal
campaigns and the trading of votes.
The morning returns indicate that the
Republicans will still control the assem
bly, although by a very largely de
creased majority.
More surprising, perhaps, than the
I returns of the state and assembly dis
tricts, was the results of the municipal
campaigns in flic large cities. New
York, BuffalOj Rochester, Binghamton,
Syracuse, Utica, Albany, Troy and
Schenectady elected Democratic mayors.
CHICAGO CONGRATULATES.
Windy City Demoorat* Send n Message to
Mayor Robert Van Wyck.
• Chicago, Nov. B.—Membeis of the
Cook county Democracy gathered at
their headquarters to listen to the elec
tion returns. President Powers, who
was among the first arrivals, ordered
the banner that was borne through the
streets of New York placed in the cen
ter of the room. Judge Vau Wyck’s
picture was tacked above the chairman’s
platform amid three cheers from the|
assembled braves.
As the election returns were being re-1
ceived many of the members departed I
from tne room temporarily. They has- I
tened to secure their long coats and i
high hats iu anticipation of a march,;
and the baud was uiso notified to put on.
its best costumes and blow the dust otii
of the bass trombones.
"Tammany is a sure winner” came
from the chair. “This message an
nounces positively that our trip did it.”
A telegram was then forwarded to
the Tammany quarters iu New York.
The message was as follows:
“The members of the Cook county
Democracy forward their congratula
tions to the greatest political organiza
tion in the world. Those who stayed
at home as well as the men whe
marched through the streets of Greater
New York congratulate the mayot
also.”
Several speeches were then made, af
ter which the members formed in line,
and to the rune of “There’ll Be a Hot
Time In the Old Town Tonight,” pa
raded the down town streets.
CLOSE VOTE IN COLORADO.
May I'ake the Official Count to Determine
ho Him a Mo* J >rity.
Denver, Nov. 3.—The result in Colo
rado is still in doubt; The News says
that William H. Gabbert, Democrat-
Populist candidate for judge of the su
preme court, is probably elected by 8,000
majority. The Republican says that
Charles D. Hayt, silver Republican, will
have 3,000 majority or mure. Hayt
carried this county by about 7,000 ma
jority.
The entire silver Republican ticket
appears to have been elected in this
county, although The News claims the
re-election of Sheriff Webb ou the Civic
Federation and Democratic tickets.
The fusionists appear to have de
feated the Republicans in El Paso
county, of which Colorado Springs is
the county seat, and in Leadville and
Lake county the silver Republicans
made a clean sweep.
MARYLAND IS DEMOCRATIC.
Republicans Lack Six Votes of Having a
Majority in the L>e<*i'*lature.
Baltimore, Nov. 3.—With semioffi
cial returns from all the counties in ths
state, except St. Mary’s aud Calvert aud
fairly good estimates from these, ths
Democrats appear to have elected
enough members-to the next legislature
to give them a majority of five on joint
ballot and to assure them a United
States senator to succeed Senator Gor
man.
Official returns may ba necessary to
deciae the position of some of the coun
ties and these may alter the result, but
from the best obtainable figures at this
time the Democrats appear to have a
total of 61 legislative votes, while the
Republicans have 56. The state senate
will be Republican by a probable ma
jority of four, while the Democrats ap
pear to have captured the lower house
by a majority of nine.
VICTORY FOR FUSIONISTS.
Pomt, the Kepublican Supreme Coart Judge
< Amiid-tle, I* Defeated.
Lincoln, Neb., Nov. B.—Additional
precinct returns from the state indicate
a fusion plurality exceeding that of 1896,
which was about 11,000. At fusion
headquarters the claim of a plurality ot
from 20,000 to 25,000 was made.

slightly reduced pluralities, except

DEMS. WIN IN KENTUCKY.
Silver »«en Will Have a .Majority •!
Twenty In the Legislature.
Louisville, Nov. 3. Kentucky
wheels into the Democratic column
again by a majority of over 25,000. Re
ports from all over the state show that
Samuel J. Shackleford, the silver Dem
ocratic nominee for appellate court
clerk, will have fully 25,000 if not 30,-
000 majority and that the silver Demo
crats will have a majority of over 20 in
the two houses of the general assembly.
Louisville, that has not gone Demo
cratic for three elections, gives Weaver,
the Democratic nominee for mayor,
about 2,500 majority, and with three
exceptions the whole municipal ticket
has been elected. •
RESULT IN PENNSYLVANIA.
Th* Republican* Carry the Kejratone State

Philadelphia, Nov. 3 —The full Vote
in Philadelphia ou the state ticket was:
State treasurer, Beacom (Rep.), 108,-

Beacom’s plurality. 70,712.
A BARBAROUS BVR<-ICAI. OPERATION
For the Cure of Piles
Is not only intensely painful, dan
gerous to life and very expensive, but in
the light of modern medical research
and since the discovery of the Pyramid

unnecessary. If you have any doubt
on this point kindly read the following
letters from people who know that our
clams regarding the merits of the Pyra

F r om N. A. Stall, Ridge Road, Niag
