doh't forget the LONG DISTANCE TELEPHONE. LUNATIC ASYLUM Fall and Compute Report of the Geor gia Hume For Uoforlunat- s. PATIENTS ON HAND SEPT. IST. 1,515 Classi fl cal ton According to Six—Charac ter of Patients Infirmity and Other Interstlng) Facts. The annual report of the lunatic asy lam is out and is unusually full and complete, says the Atlanta Journal. It is preceded hy a communication from Mr. G. A. CabaniM, president of the board of trustees, and contains the reports es the superintendent, Dr. T. O. Powell, andstocekeeper, engineer, ma troit. apothecary, librarian, chaplain and pathologist. The re,port of the patholo gist, Dr. T. E. Vertdl. is illustrated with a number of half-tone cuts, show ing how th« brain "was affected in cases Which were subjected to post mortem examination. With these are elaborate ■memoranda anatomical lessons and the results of microscopic examinations of the kidneys of insane persons who died at the asylum. This matter is in techni cal form and will doubtless be of great interest to the medical profession. Dr. Powell’s report of occupations of the persoas committed during the past year and the causes of their insanity is interesting and instructive. It separates white from colored patients and is as follows: The numberof patients on hand Sep eember Ist was 4,515, of whom -096 were white male lunatics, 79 white male epileptics, 30 white male idiots, making 705 white males; 714 whitefeuaale luna t cs, 69 white female epileptics and 27 white femaleidiots, making SlO white females. Total whites, 1,515. The colored patients were classified as follows: Malelunatics 311, male epilep tics 16, maleudiots 5, total males 332; female lunatics 3C7, female epileptics 13, female idiots 1, total females 321. Total co'ored<«s3. Dr. Powell makes an important recom .mendation as to the criminal and con wict insane. He says it is a great evil and injustice to ttee-ordinary insane to force them to associate with criminals and .convicts. “‘Superintendents of all insame hospi tals. ” says he, “are fully agreed that the wards of hospitals for the ordinary insane are not the proper places for the care, custody amd treatment of the con vict insane. It can be readily seen that the moral effect is hurtful. It impresses the ordinary insane that the asylum is a prison and not a hospital for the care and treatment of the sick. “It is also injurious to the convict and doubtful.cases of criminal insanity. “With many it is absolutely necessary to keep them under constant observa tion, and very frequently many are con fined to their rooms, hence diverting the attention of the nurse from other pa tients, thereby depriving them of the attention they should have. They are the most disturbing and demoralizing element that we have, creating con stant anxiety and apprehension. '‘A great deal of thought, labor and attention of late has been given to the ■convict question as to the best mode of providing for them, and I trust that in considering their care the proper pro vision of the eonvict and doabtful cases of criminal insane will not be over looked. “In my judgment there is no class that appeals more strongly for proper provision for their care and treatment and all of the dictates of humanity and the pathetic appeals of the ordinary in sane demand that provision should be made for them. ‘ ‘To mix the two classes is a serious evil which is injurious to both, and an injustice to society, for they cannot be Merit Made and Merit Maintains theconfldence of the people in Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Deputy Warden Pearson, of the Georgia penitentiary, passed through the city yesterday afternoon says the Chattanooga Times en route to the Dade coal mines at Cole City, Ga., with Walter Bohannon, “Bill” Long, Ben Pearce, Sam Painter, Thomas Kinsman and Ed Morris (colored), the Dalton train robbers, and Taylor Delk, of Pike'County. Deputy Pearson brought his prison ers to Chattanooga on the noon train from Atlanta, and left for the Dade mines with them on the 1:35 p. m. train. Today Bohannon and his gang wil begin serving their sentences in the Dade coal mines, which are worked by the Georgia Mining and Manufac turing company with Georgia con victs. Whale the train was standing in the depot yesterday afternoon Bohannon and bis partners in crime attracted considerable attention. When a Times man entered the car Bohannon was joking his partners about their sentences. Bohannon stated that his mother lived in Chattanooga on Hake street, and that he worked there in 1881 for the Memphis and*Charleston railway. ”©o you want to say anything about your trials'” queried the re porter. •“No, I have got nothing to gay,” bereplied. “I said about all there was to be* said during the trial. I realize now that anything that I might say about myself or my part ners would not injure me or them. am satisfied that I got off pretty light with a ten-years’ sentence to the Georgia coal mines. I am now 32 years of age and you see I won’t be so very old when I get out. •“Some of my partners are really sorry that they did [not expect to re ceive three-year-sentences.” “Do you know where Drew Peeples is?” asked the reporter. “They say he is in the Indian Ter ritory.” he replied, “hut I believe he can be found with relatives in the mountains of Walker county, Ga. ” Bohannon was in fine spirits, and he shook hands with several old friends before the train pulled out for Nashville. Taylor Delk was the oldest man in the crowd. He was one of the most desperate criminals that ever lived in Pike county. Borne two or three years ago he and hie son, Bob Delk, killed the sheriff of that county. It was a most cold-blooded murder. The senior Delk was sentenced to the penitentiary for life and young Delk was executed in Pike county about two months ago. • WARNING:—Persons zho suffer from coughs and colds should heed the warnings of danger and save themselves suffering and fatal results by using One Minute Cough Cure.
