New York, Nov. 4. —A dispatch to
The Herald from Havana says: The
rebels in thh field are very active. On
Oct. 10 the Spaniards sustained the
t snost severe loss they have met for
sometime. Ou tne borders of Matanzas
province General Molina was defeated
’i>y the insurgents under General Betan
court. General Molina was on his way
«o Havana, accompanied by half a
brigade ot, troops, to participate in Gen
eral Blanco’s reception. At Agacuate
he heard the rebels were encamped in
the Purgatorio hills aud broke his march
to attack them. The fight was a long
one aud the Spanish loss was tre
mendous. He was finally obliged to
retreat. . ,
A report apparently well founded was
current in Havana to the effect that
Holguin has been attacked and cap
tured by the rebels under General Oo
breco. That it has been attacked and
75 Spaniards.killed is admitted, but the
Capture is denied. General Luque.
with heavy reinforcements, has left Ha

In a-book on the the Caban war, just
issued here. General Weyler writes the
introduction. In one place he says:
■•The system of warfare carried on by
me during the 'Cuban campaign is not a
new one.' The same was pursued by
the Americans of the north when they
fought their brethren of the south.”

Captain General Muu Explain the Speech
He Made on Leaving Cuba.
Madrid, Nov. 4.—At a meeting of
-the Spanish cabinet it was decided to
demand an explanation from General
Weyler of the remarks he made in his
farewell address on leaving Havana last
.Saturday.
Previous to embarking on board the
steamer Montserat, which co'nveyed him

deputation of Autonomists, and in his
address to them he said:
••My’release from my post and re

had expected it from the death of Senor
Cauovas, not believing that any politi
cal leader would be strong enough to
sustain me when the United States and
rebels were togetber.coustantly demand

fied with the local Spanish party. But
the policy which I have followed was
not adopted in obedience to any politi

on behalf of my country. Before I
came I was well aware -of the patriotic
conduct of the volunteers; and, since
my arrival. I have often seen it illus

Killing frosts have fallen in the north

few nights.
The feeimg here is very much better
now and business is beginning to show
some signs of activity. Few if any
refugees have returned, however.
The state quarantine has been raised
against all points by Governor John
ston, and persons, as well as freight,
