Descriplin of tie Asylun Fire While . m4 Wtf U uoewnd. THE LOSS AM) FNStJK'OPCE FIGURES *A Wild Lunatic on the Roof of the Build ing Creates Consternat : on Among the Guards of the Asylum. The Macon Telegraph’s Milledge ville correspondent furnishes that paper with the following thrilling de scription of the scene during and after the fire that consumed the negro de partment of the state insane asylum: The very thought of a fire in an in sane asylum is enough to make one’s blood run, cold and the anouncement of it always carries to the mind one of the most horrible picture imaginable but the, sight must be seen to be taken in all of its horrible details. Just think of 680 human being bereft of reason and responsibility suddenly thrown into a state of terror and pan ic with a mere handful of guards or attendants to hold them in check. The S':ene is absolutely beyond, de scription and no human pen can de pict—and yet, atter all, it was not near so bad as it might have been, for in this vast crowd of lunatics were many of the most desperate criminals known in the history of the state, whose fury and violent disposition has not been tempered by confine ment and who would not hesitate to slaughter a hundred men to satisfy thirst for blood Among this crowd Were hundreds who might be classed as maniacs and others in all the va rious stages of insanity, and all ot them would have been turned loose had the fire occurred in the night time or had the asylum offlcals been lees coolheaded and careful. Os course the guards and attendants could not completely control this mad dened horde, and while they were corraling them, many ran wild, but by tact and force they were taken in custody and to places of safety with out serious damage. Throughout the night and all day yesterday their wi'd shrieks were heard. They are now huddled to gether in any manner possible t keep them in’cbeck, but as the annex is only slightly damaged many of them can be cared for there and the crowded condition now existing can be somewhat relieved. A sight this morning that froze the blood in the veins of the stoutest hearts was the appearance of one of the wildest lunatics in the asylum on the roof of the main building. This lunatic is a half breed Indian and is from Houston county. He is a per fect Hercules and tore the lightning rods from the building with the great est ease. The pieces of lighting rod he would throw as a spear at the peo ple in the yard below, and when they ran out of the way he would shriek out loud peals of maniacal laughter and then run about on the roof, along the edges and tear up the tin roofing. Those who watched him expected each moment to see him hurl himself from the building to the ground, a distance of 150 feet. • He evidently en joyed the fright of the people below, as he would sometimes run to the edge of the roof and suddenly throw himself into a sitting position with his feet dangling over. A sane man would have been dashed to pieces in the court belw. Whenever he was ap- z^-~ \ rpHE old man who I J- looks out at the world with clear and healthy eyes cannot help feeling great gratification at the thought that his I children and his r i tjffilljML' uk \ children’s children I k »a K have inherited from ! i wEflSwPj iffli I ' him no weakness nor / ijßMiffjßlb ( tendency to disease. Germs go through the healthy bodv without effect. They are hurried along rapidly and thrown off before they have time to develop or increase. Let them once find lodgment or let them find a weak spot th?v will develop by the million and the h <»-d will be full of them. Instead of rich. li I ™ ving properties, the blood will be a sir. nutnd tide of impurity. Th ■ more flesh he loses and the weaker he be omes, the more susceptible he is to disease. His trouble will become complicated uid serious consequences will follow. Dr. Tierce’s Golden Medical Dis covery is the - nly medicine that absolutely and infallibly cures all blood diseases, and almost all diseases are blood diseases. It isn’t a medicine for some one particular so-called disease. It is a medicine for the whole bodv. It forces out all the germs of disease, replaces impurities with rich, red blood, feeds the tissues and makes strong, healthy flesh. A NECKLACE OF PEARLS PIWT Is a beautiful possession. During yesterday’s confusion sever al of the lunatic, both male and fe male, stripped themselves of their clothing and ran about the grounds. Some months ago a one armed tramp called at Gridley’s home and asked for some thing to eat. The good natured clerk gave him food, had a talk With the man and was convinced that he was deserv ing. The tramp’s name was McNellis, and, his first meal at Gridley’s home was followed by others He also receiv ed clothes. He expressed his gratitude and said some day he would reward his benefactor. At length the tramp disap peared. Some weeks ago Gridley was aston ished to receive a letter fropi the man postmarked in Lower California. The writer said he had discovered a rich gold mine, aud he wished to take Grid ley in as equal partner. The police clerk paid little attention to the letter, but later letters from McNellis confirmed his original information. What finally awakened Gridley’s interest was a tele gram from McNellis at Ensenada, say ing that a large price had been offered for the property by a wealthy company and asking what Gridley intended do ing with his interest. Then the police clerk secured a leave of absence and re cently started for Ensenada to meet Mc- Nellis.
