MISS WILLARD PLANS A FINE PALACE
FOR WORKINGMEN.
To Be Built In Evanston —Cherished Hope
of the Great Temperance Apostle -Her
Idea Is to Give Laborers the Best In
| Club Life.
“1 have dedicated this fifty-ninth
year of my life to the raising of the in
debtedness of the Woman’s temple. 1
mean as well, on my return to Evan
ston, my old home, to have built there a
palace home for workingmen. 1 think 1
shall be kept busy with those two proj
ects, ” said Frances Willard recently
in Buffala Once the temple ts safe,
Miss Willard wishes to establish in
Evanston a workingman’s home—a pal
ace home, as she calls it. She added:
“We’havein Evanston—it ought to
be called Heavenston —clubs and social
organizations for everything under the
sun but the social needs of the working
men. The workingman, free from bis
toil, has nowhere to go outside of his
own home to meet his fellow man in
pleasant conversation. I want a club
building to be erected for him, not as
pretentious as the Woman’s temple, but
• fine, a permanent place. 1 want it to
be fitted up nicely and to be given'to
him to care for, to enjoy, to be a refuge
from the saloons of the city and other
places of evil resort 1 believe 1 can
bring this about. 1 shall try it *’
Her plan for the Palace home, as
Miss Willard fondly terms it, is that it
shall be an open clubhouse, a social re
sort for the mechanics and artisans of
Chicago whose homes are jn Evanston,
Bogers park and the immediate vicin
ity of the university town. Such place
does not exist in Evanston at the pres
- ent time, nor in Chicago tor that mat
ter Miss Willard would have the work
ingmen possess this place after the
wealthy and philanthropic bad built for
them the structure. A possibility exists
that iu building the home the most af
fluent of the workingmen to share in
the benefits of the place will be asked
to co-operate, so that interwoven with
its stone and brick and mortar will be
the good fellowship and kindliness of
the woman Frances Willard, the well to
do and the men to be directly benefited.
The plan for the home, for that in
every sense of the word Miss Willard
Wishes it tn be, contemplates no extrav
agant outlay of money, no heavy issue
of bonds nor large capitalization She
desires that it should be a simple but
beautiful resort, whose greatest show
should not be m its walls, but in the hap
piness of the hearts that dwell within.
•’You know what a social place
Evanston is.” said Miss Willard
“There are clubs in the tow® for almost
everything’ except workingmen. We
have clubs there for the fishermen, for
the golf players, tor the hunters, for
those who have great pleasure, for wo
men who study and women who debate
Most of these clubs are in lovely homes.
Some have built exquisite structures for
themselves. Others have rented quar
ters. The evidence of wealth and refine
ment is at hand in all of them.
“Now, what 1 want, what 1 am going
to work for as soon as I return to Evan
ston, is to start vigorous plans for the
building of a workingmen’s clubhouse
right in my home town. There is mon
ey enough there to erect it, and 1 think
the people have only to be asked, to
have the thing brought before them iu
the proper light, to see that it would be
a great thing for Evanston as well as
giving much joy to the intelligent men
who will make up its membership.
"1 have not iu mind the erection of
any building as expensive as the temple

"We have in Evanston ample proper
ty locations on which the kind of a
clubhouse 1 want can be erected. The
city has been beautifully improved and
furnishes the finest kind of surround
ings for such a clubhouse. The ground
once acquired, we have then-to secure
the funds for building .lust what the
plans for the building will be cannot be
said now The project is only in its in
fancy at present and details must be sup
plied by each and all
“But the idea has been nurtured and
developed, and lam deeply in earnest
in having it become a fact. Nowhere in
the vicinity of Chicago is there so beau
tiful a situation on which to erect a
clubhouse of this kind as in Evanston.
Where such clubhouses have been erect
ed they have proved great moral forces
in the community.
“The workingman as much as any
other human being likes his social pleas
ures. Too often the saloon is the only
place where attractions are held forth
for him to stay. A clubhouse will coun
teract the influence of the saloon to a
wonderful degree. The place should
have books, music, pictures, flowers, a
place to lounge in and a place to be so
ciable in. The workingman should feel
that it is his home and that it has come
to him through the generosity of those
well able to give. You will see what
such a place will be for the men who
become habitues of it. They will be
elevated, made stronger, better fathers,
purer husbands, cleaner men.
“1 have thought of this for ever so
long It is not a dream with me. 1
mean, with such a strength as 1 have,
that it shall become a reality in stone
mid brick in as short a time as possible. ”

SLEEPING CAR INVENTOR.
N«t to Pullman, but to Theodore T. Wood
. ruff. Belongs the Credit.
The popular notion that the late
George M. Pullman invented the sleep
ing car is incorrect. The tact is that
Theodore T Woodruff of Watertown,
N. Y., for many years a resident of that
city, invented and patented the first
sleeping car, and George M. Pullman
paid him $186,0(10 tor his right to the
invention.
Woodruff’s first patent was granted
early iu the fifties, and after consider
able difficulty he got permission from
Erastus Corning, then president of the
New York Central, to place it on that
road for trial He ran it for six months,
and then took it to the Pennsylvania
road for inspection. Thomas Scott and
James Roberts saw it at Pittsburg and
made a bargain with Woodruff for it
Pullman then began to contest Wood
ruff’s patents and was defeated in the
United States courts He then bought
Woodruff’s patents, and the latter re
tired from the business in 1861
Pullman made improvements on the
Woodruff car, but the original plan nev
er was changed, and the present sleep
ing car is on the same principle as the
first one built by Woodruff.—St. Louis

TH JU ROME TRIBUNE. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 14 LSfIS
HE NEVER LOVED A LORD.
But His Five Girls Married Titles, All
tbe Same.
It was evident that he was not only
pretty well satisfied with himself, but
that he didn’t care who knew it.
“Five daughters, ’’ he said, “and ev
ery one of them married to a title
That’s a pretty good record for a man
Who wouldn’t be considered rich enough
to buy more than one high grade title. ”
“I don't see how you did it,’’ sug
gested the man who knew nothing ex
cept that the husband with a title was
ordinarily quoted ata pretty stiff figure
“Oh, it’s easy when you know how. ”
replied the self satisfied man. “So far
as 1 am concerned 1 would have prefer
red to marry the girls to enterprising
young Americans with no titles, but
their mother insisted upon getting them
something more fashionable, and when
their mother insists 1 have to hump
myself and see that tilings come the
way she wants them 1 confess it was
something of a problem at first, but
when I got it figured out in my mind
and began playing the cards it was so
easy that 1 was inclined to be ashamed
of myself tor not trying something
harder. ”
The self satisfied man stopped long
enough for the listener to suggest that
he would be glad to hear the story, and
then, in view of the fact that they were
all married and publicity could do no
harm, he told it.
“1 took all my available assets, ’’ he
explained, “and made them a dowry
for my eldest daughter Naturally there
was a rush for her. and she was able to
take her pick of five. 1 rushed matters
as much as possible, got her married,
gave up the dowry 1 had promised, and
then steered her titled husband against
the Stock Exchange, where 1 gave him
some bad tips, took his trades myself
through a broker and won back all the
dowry and part of his ancestral estates.
Then 1 gave the dowry to my second
daughter, got her married and played
the same game with her husband. 1
worked the scheme right through the
family, until 1 finally married my
youngest to a baronet yesterday 1 got
them to postpone their wedding trip for
a few days, so as to give me a chance to
win back the dowry before they had
spent any of it. and by day after tomor
row 1 expect to be on Easy street again,
without a care m the world. If girls
must have titles, why, 1 am in favor of
giving them to them, but 1 don t believe
in contributing large fortunes to the
support of the tottering monarchies of
the old world, and, what’s more, 1
don’t intend to do it. ” —Chicago Post.
