About a Score of Members Spent Sunday In Rome. SCENES AND INCIDENTS OF DAY Uncle Joe Mansfield Makes « Profound Impression on Our Streets—The Colored Member Here. z--r- n, Judging from the flattering _ fi expressions and <7/ x many compli- - menu, all the \ members of the i/y legislature who ___ — "ere here Sun-, day, are desirous ‘‘Uncle Joe” Mans- of coming to field arrives. Rome to live. They are convinced that Rome is the best city of its size in the world. * The legislators attended church Sun day morning and heard the different Presbyterian divines. Senator Dun woody, of Brunswick, and Representa tive Chartres, of Dahlonega, accompany ed Capt. A. W. Walton to St. Peter’s church. In the rfternoon the visitors drove out to the Massachusetts cotton mills at Lindale. The drive was continued too late over the city for them to catch the afternoon Southern train so they staid over until yesterday morning. They were all charmed with Rome and were profuse in their admiration of its splendid advantages and re sources. “The big cotton mill,” said Senator Dunwoody, “is atypical New England industry. “It is great enterprise for Rome.” “1 was especially impressed,” said Senator Cook, “With the well dressed and healthy operatives. The women seemed in the very bloom of health, and the children, too.” “Yes, I never saw so many children in one village,” said another. “Looked like there was a thousand,” A stop Was, also, made at Mobley Springs and park by the party. The Only Colored Member. The legislators were joked consid erably Sunday be caused they were joined by their “brother in black.” Represent a t i v e Law is the only col ored members. As 11 thejOtherJmembers had sa’d they were coming to Rome to attend the Synod the ‘ ‘brother in black” thought be had the same right to attend the col ord Synod. "Inimitable” Joe Manafield. Much Jwas the fun and many the laughs had at the expense of “Uncle Joe” Mansfield. He told over and over again why be thought prize fight ing should be legalized and football prohibited. The legislature would not consider his bill for prizefighting, but he says he will move for a recon sideration. Then his stories aboutJSapelo island 'never failed to produce much merri ment. “Uncle Joe” was the life of the party. It is said that he was so glad to get to Rome that he ran all the way from the train to the Arm strong hotel. “Uncle Joe” is one of those kind of fellows who never knows when he is dead. He says that there are many members in favor of the penal island plan for the convicts, and he still ex pects to push Sapelo island. AU Ro mans who met “Uncle Joe” will vote for him for King of Ireland, or Sapelo just ashe prefers. •‘The House of Lords.** The state senate is composed of an unusually fine body of men this session. In Senators Cook, Dunwoody and Kil patrick who accompanied Senator Shropshire to Rome as citizens saw four of the brightest and most influential and most popular members of the upper house. While the other members left on the 6 o'clock train, the senators did not go until the 9 o’clock train as the ‘‘House of Lords’ ’ did not meet until noon. Senator Kilpatrick lives in Monticello, the town in which the late Col. Alfred Shorter laid the foundation ot his large fortune. As a young man Col. Shorter was a clerk in the store of Mr.'John Bald win, a prosperous merchant. He died and Col. Shorter married his widow. He was a natural money maker and shortly aftei wards moved to Rome. Senator Kilpatrick states that his law office is almost over, and in the same block as the store occupied by Col. Shorter while a merchant in that town. The bouse occupied by Col. and Mrs. Shorter has been added to and Is now used as one of Montecello’s hotela It was regretted that daring hie THE ROME TRIBUNE. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16. 18H7. Chief Olerk White of the Philadelphia court of quarter sessions, went through his books, but no record whatever could be found of the conviction of a diamond thief that-would fit .with the story told in New York. The records of the de tective department were also searched, but with the same futile results. Baltimore and Ohio Earuleg*. THE LANIER CIRCLE Yery Brillian’ Program of Last Night’s Meeting at W. J. Ned's. MUSK, ESSAYS AND RECITATIONS Review of “Quo Vadis” By Mr, Fred G. Govan Was a Magnificent Paper-It Will Be Published In Full. The Lanier circle’s November meetirg at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Neel last night was very brilliant. The program was most attractive and thoroughly enjoyid by tbe large number of members who tilled the double parlors to overflowing. D r . A. J. Battle presided with Ins cus tomary affability and pleasing dignity. Mrs. Rowell read tbe miputes of the meeting held at the Piintup’s in rhyme. The verses were very clever. Miss Mitchell, of Mobile, sang two solos during the evening which showed her well trained voice to advantage. Each number was warmly app ended. “Joan of Arc” was the subject, a bright essay by Mrs. Ethel Hillyer Harris. She was unable to be present and the paper was read by one of tbe young men present, Mr. Charles Farris’ cornet solo of varia tions of “Suwanee river” was a pleasing novelty. Miss Laura Brown, one of Shorter college’s handsomest girls, recited “To morrow at Tea” in a truly dramatic style. Her manner was thoroughly charming. Miss Nellie Printup showed her skill as a violinist in the “Hungarian dances.” Her technique is admirable and the tones from her instrument were true and harmonious. She received much deserved applause, but did not respond to the encore. In his revie vof ‘ Quo Vadis,” Mr, Fred G. Govan fairiy outdid himself. It was a brilliant piece of work, revel ling in tropical language describing tbe scenes of the book and motives of the characters. He was highly compli mented by all present. Much is McHenry for her arrangement and interest in tbe musical part of the program. Last night she and Miss Mary West rendered the over ture fiom “Semiramide” in a faultless style. Miss Judd, from a city of cultured and beautiful women, fully upheld the refu tation of Macon in Her recitation. “The Light From Over the Main,” Her ex pression was not stagey, affected, but natural, and dramatic ability of a high order was evinced. Miss Judd is one of tbe most stylish and most admired stu dents ofjShorter college. The dialect recitations of Miss Es telle Mitchell Was one of the finest nuu bers of tbe evening. ‘ ‘What broke up the meeting” as told in one of Miss Will Allen Dromgoole’s Tennessee stories was her subject, and she told it as well as Miss Dromgoole does. “It (nought down the house” to use a common expression and to an en core she responded with “When the Major Leads the Ball,” which-was much enjoyed. Miss Mitchell is one of most gifted elocutionists in the South and she is always heard with pleasure everywhere she visits in the states Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. Mr. Hughes Reynolds invited all present to hear Signor Randegger on Friday night, and assured them of a rare musical treat. The December meeting of the circle will be held with Mrs. Ethel Hillyer Harris. Graphite In North Carolina. Raleigh.
