YOUR COAT OF ARMS.
••HERALD PAINTER” MATTHEWS WILL
HELP YOU GET IT.
American “Burke'* Peerage”—He Will Bn*
rail Your Armorial Bearing*—lf You
■are Not Any, He Will Find One For
Yon—Some Arma and Create.
By invitation of John Matthews,
“record agent, genealogist and herald
painter, ” ail Americans who are proud
of their ancestry or who wish to have
their posterity become proud of them
may join iu the first serious attempt in
America to establish a real recorded
aristocracy.
The invitation to become enrolled in
“Matthews’ American Armoury and
Blue Book," has been received by all
the families whose names appear in the
social registers of New York, Boston,
Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago,
Troy, Salt Lakeland other cities where
wealth and culture concentrate. The
plan teas the indorsement of such distin
guished personages as Richard Watson
Gilder, poet and editor; E. Cholmeley-
Jones of Philadelphia, who is Mr. Gil
der’s brother-in-law, and Halsey C.
Ives, the director of the St. Louis Muse
um «f Fine Arte.
It was no idle Ifancy that led Mr.
Matthews to undertake the giant task <ctf
getting out an American "Burke’s Peer
age. * ’ so to speak, lit was his firm convic
tion that Americans were crying for
such a work and were ready to pay well
lor it. He says it is only necessary to
read the “society” papers to- be con
vinced of the demand among Americans
for a recorded place in the human race.
He intends that all American families
of European descent, bearing asms,
shall be registered in his book, without
paying fees to the heralds* college. All
they will have to pay is a 115 subscrip
tion fee to his hook.
All who. subscribe, Mr. Matthews
says, will be given a place in the book
for an engraving of their armorial bear
ings, together with particulars of the
heads of each family, their issue and
the marriage of the latter Those who
have no armorial bearings need not be
downcast, for Mr Matthews says he
will give them a place in the book for
their pedigrees, leaving a blank for the
armorial bearings in case they are dis
covered later, so they can be printed in
the second edition.
Mr Matthews realizes there are many
Americans who feel sure the blood of
their members is as blue as can be, but
Who never have had time to establish
the fact. It is there Mr Matthews comes
in strong as a "record agent, genealo
gist and hefald painter.” lie Will find

In this connection it is interesting to
recall that in one volume of American
heraldry- recently-published appear the
names and the arms or crests of as many
families as there are in Burke’s "Landed
Gentry ’’ This disposition on the part of
Americans to establish ancestral lines
and assume armorial bearings and crests
is encouraged by genealogical and his
torical societies in nearly every city,
and individual families have spent for
tunes on genealogical searches and elab
orate family histories.
The arms of the family of William
G. Whitney are to be found wherever
the family’s personal possessions are.
It consists of a gold and red cross on a
blue shield. The crest is a bull’s head,
the horns tipped with red.
President McKinley has a coat of
arms—a stag on a red shield, indicat
ing his Scotch descent. The crest is a
knight’s helmet and an arm holding a
laurel wreath, showing his ancestors
were crusaders. His family motto is
“Not too much. ”
William Jennings Bryan also has a
coat of arms it is a fancy red and white
shield. The crest is a knight’s helmet.
Over it is the head of a patriarchal old
man, who is probably one of the ancient
Druids.
Richard Broker’s coat of arms shows
three ravens op a shield, with the mot
to, “God feedii them. ”
Asa Bird Gardiner, district attorney
elect, wears his coat of arms on his cuff
buttons It is a shield upon which there
are two birds and a Maltese cross.
Theodore Rcosevelt aims a little high
er. He has three roses on a silver shield,
and above are three ostrich plumes The
crest of three plumes is generally sup
posed to belong exclusively to the Prince
of Wales —New .York World.

Remarkable Success of a Now Pile Cara.
People who have suffered for years or
months from the pain and inconvenience
of that common, disorder, piles, will
look with skepticism upon the claims of
the makers of the new discovery for cure
of all forms of piles, known under the
Pyramid Pile Cure; nevertheless the ex
traordinary cures performed by this
remedy are such as to warrant tbe in
vestigation of any sufferer. As a case in
point the following letter speaks ior it
self:
Mr. Henry Thomas sub station No. 3.
Hosack Ave., Columbus, Ohio, writes as
follow:
Pyramid Drug Co:
Gentlemen:—l want you to use my
name if it will be of any use to you. I
was so bad with the piles that 1 lost
work on that account. Nothing did me
any good. I read in Cincinnati of the
many cures of piles by the Pyramid Pile
Cure and I went to a drug store and
asked for|it. The drug clerk tolffme
that he had something else that he
thought was better, but I told him that
I wanted to try the Pyramid first.
The first box helped me so much that
I tried another and then to complete the
cure used two more boxes, making four
in all. I am now completely cured.
Have not a trace of piles and I had suf
fered for four years with tbe worst form
of protruding piles.
I suffered death from piles, but I have
found the Pyramid Pile Cure to be just
as represented. I have recommended it
to several of my friends and I am thank
ful to be able to write yon what good
the remedy has done for me. ”
Physicians recommend the Pyramid
Pile Cure because it contains no opium,
cocaine, or mineral poison of any kind,
and because it is safe and pleasant to
use, being painless and applied at night.
The patient is cured in a surprisingly
short time with no inconvenience what
ever.
The Pyramid Pile Cure is sold by
druggists at 99 cents per package, and
if there is any constipation it is well to
use tbe Pyramid Pills at the same time
with the Pile Cure, as constipation’ is
very often the cause of pilesand the pills
effectually remove the costive condition.
Price of pills is 25 cents per package.

of piles: sent by mail free.
Sending Christmas Presents.
A word about the manner of sending
a Christmas gift. A dainty wrapping
will give a holiday air to the little re
membrance that will add greatly to its
value. The prettiest way to dress a
Christmas gift and the one that savors
njost of sleighbells and freshly fallen
snow is to wrap the parcel in glistening
white French tisane paper and tie with
silver cord or scarlet ribbon, slipping a
bit of Crisp holly or mistletoe through
the knot and then fastening in a bow.
Natural flowers axe also used. For ex
ample, a dainty box contaipipg a gift
for a tiny child is wrapped in snowy
paper and tied with white satin ribbon
of the narrowest width, through which
is thrust a bunch of tiny rosebuds, their
ends just turning pink. In using flow
ers their color should always follow the
color scheme of the gift as far as possi
ble.

United States .MarNhal Bryant
Montgomery. Ala., Nov. 19—Some
indignation is being expressed here by
some of the white Republicans at the
action of United States Marshal Bryant
in patting negro guards over white
prisoners.
Daring ths epidemic here Judge Bruce
ordered the United States prisoner*
here to be transferred to some place of
safety, and they were accordingly taken
to Atlanta aud thence to some prison in
Georgia. There were 11 prisoners, nine
white men and two negroes, and three
guards were sent along to manage them.
Os these guards two were negroes and
one was a white man.
Most of the prisoner* are said to have
come from Randolph and Olay, both
White Republican strongholds, aud it is
said that there is considerable kick up
in those hills about the marshal’s action
in placing negroes in charge of the
whites.
