A dispatch to The Herald from Portland, Me., says: Speaker Reed was asked if there was any truth in the reports printed iu New York to the effect that lie con templated going to that city to live and practice law. It is true that I have ambition and will in all probability be a candidate to succeed Senator Morgan, but Ido not intend to be a. candidate for congress and the senate at the same time. I will take iny friends into con sultation before I become a candidate for the senate. ” This utterance on the part of the con gressman is taken iu the state to mean that he is a candidate for the senate. Raleigh, Nov. 19.—The penitentiary directors desire to employ convicts al Navassa rice plantation, near Winning ton, provided it can be operated iu con nection with the state convict camp at the phosphate mines at Oastle Hayne. The penitentiary has bought the phos phate property. The Navassa company Wishes to secure the entire output. It is possible that some bottom lands in Bladen county will also be used for rice culture, an option having been se cured on 1,500 acres there, but this also is conditioned upon the practicability of operating with the Oastle Hayne camp as a base. A 200-acre farm ad joining the penitentiary, belonging to the Boylan family, is leased and is now being put in cultivation. The contract with S. P. Hildebrand of Uohoes, N. Y.. to furnish him con victs to m.ike shirts in the prison is signed.
