COON’S CLOSE CALL
Mortorman King’s Presence of Mind
Saved Pickaninny’s L’ft.
ALMOST CRUSHED UNDER A CAR
Bearing Down on the Unconcerned
Youngster, When Bob King Leaned
Over and Grabbed the Kid.
Sunday afternoon, Motorman ‘'Bob”
King rescued a small pickaninny from
being ground to pulp beneath his car
King was on the Mobley Spring line on
that day. About a quarter of a mile
beyond Lytle’s spring there are two
Mus<s>..to*.Mt fit ;.th® track going to
ward* ttie park. These 'houses are oc
cupied by colored families.
Sunday afternoon King’s car was spin
ning merrily along towards Mobley’s.
Just at these houses there is a sharp curve
in the track, and it is down grade. The
electric cars shoot around this bend at
pretty lively clip, the bell always ring
ing a sharp alarm.
The car raced around the curve, and
Motorman King was horrified to see a
small negro seated squarely in the middle
of the track playing.
He shut the current off, wrenched the
brake as tight as possible, and made the
bell jangle fearfully. But all unconscious
of danger the pickaninny continued its
play. King saw that he could not stop
his car before striking the kid, so he in
stantly formed a daring idea.
Just before tbe car reached tbe lit
tie negro, the motorman leaned far
down in front, and seized the tiny
African by the clothing.
The strain on the good arm was ter
rifle, and the coon was kicking and
yelling with fright. King’s grasp was
not a good one, and tbe wiggling lump
of humanity slipped loose before the
car had stopped.
The little negro was in the centre of
the track, and as the car passed over
it, the brake . caught and dragged it
some distance. As soon as the car
stopped King leaped down, exp.eting
to find the shapeless remains ot the
coon.
But that youngster crawled out and
scuttled across to tbe house as fast as
bis short limbs would carry him. It
was not hurt in the slightest.
King’s presence of mind undoubted
ly saved the pickaninny from instant
death.
Bob King is one of the road’s most
reliable motormen, and did not seem
to think be had done anything out of
the ordinary.

EMERGENCY HOSPITAL.
Thanksgiving Collections of All the
Churches Will Be Given to it.
The thanksgiving collections at the
churches will be given to the Emer
gency hospital.
The Tribune is requested to state
that all who prefer to make hontribu
t one of provisions, clothing or such
should send direct to the hospital on
Thursday.
One poor woman has come to the
hospital without a change of clothing
and the ladies wish tbe good people
would send some.
Everyone should give as freely as
possible to this noble charity. The
good ladies of Rome have worked in
cessantly for it, and had it not been
for their labors the institution would
not have lived.
It has seen stormy days, days when
it seemed impossible to keep tbe
Emergency open, but they only in
creased tbeir efforts, and placed their
trust in providence, and somehow
things have come through.
It is a pleasure to state that. Romans
are waking up to the importance of
this institution and the work it is ac
complishing.
It was started last June one year
ago. There was only one patient at
first, and the beginning was very
modest indeed. But it has grown all
the while, and now is in fairly good
condition. They have, had as many
as thirteen patients at once, and in
their present commodious quarters in
the Holmes building on Second avenue
have accommodations for twenty
patients.
Tbe ladies are working to buy a
home for Emergency and have a very
neat sum on hand now.
Let everybody give money or some
thing Thursday and make it a day
long to be remembered.

SOME CONFUSION.
Press Man For the Daniel A. Kelly Com
pany is Not Up To His Business.
There was considerable coLfusion
and no little kicking last night at tbe
initial performance of the Dan A.
Kelly Company. .
Bunday’s Tribune announced that
‘‘ladies would be admitted free if with
a person holding a paid thirty cent
ticket.” This was done through the
blundering of the advance man. He
left a lot of prepared press notices
with Tbe Tribune, as is tbe custom,
and of course was used just as prepared.
Last night many couples were Out
on the strength of tbe proposit.oa,
but instead of one 30 cent ticket per
couple, it took two fifty cent tickets.
The company is a popular price one
only, but is psaying here at advanced
prices over those charged in Atlanta.
They give a very clever performance,
however, and quite a good crowd was
out last evening. They play again to
night.
