Turnei- Nurreudern to the Autliorltles, Columbia, S. 0., Nov. 23. —W. H Newbold, cnief state detective, accom pauied by his lawyer and a couple of friends, appeared at the governor's ofiiee.iu the statehouse to surrender for trial for the killing of J. H. Turner in Spartanburg ou Nov. 10. The governor was advised by Attorney General Bar: ber not to have anything to do with the case. One of Newbold’s friends held him as prisoner aud will get the S3OO. Gen eral Barber will cause the sheriff of Spartanburg to be telegraphed for aud Newbold will be given into his keeping. Newbold says he was in Columbia a week ago. He was advised by the state authorities, presumably the governor, not to surreuuer till rhe court in Spar tanburg adjourned. He cannot be tried now before; March. Newbold suys he regrets bitterly the killing of Turner, that it was accidental. He was just about to leave the detective business, he says, and begin the prac tice of law, aud would have applied for admission to the bar at the next sitting of the supreme court. Since the killing, a friend has sat by his side while he slept and one has ac companied him by day to prevent sur prises. An iinpiirUut Daoiaioii. Nov. 23 —The at torneys Os Mrs. Lula Williams are be ginning to fear that the lady will never 1 realise the full amount of the verdiet she secured in the court of common pleas for this county last spring against 81. R. Reese, for the murder of her hus band, Charles T. Williams, at Blacks burg, on Feb. 8, 1890. The verdict ren dered in favor of Mrs. Williams yas for $6,b00, but before the trial it seems the property was attached at the instance Os Hart & Hart aud E. A. Trescott, who - defended Reese on the trial for his life and also at the instance of Mrs Jennie Roberts, a sister of Reese. Opunsel for Mrs. Williams sought to enjoinlne prosecution of their claims on the ground of collusion and. fraud. The affidavits iu connection with the injunction proceedings made some lively reading on both sides and at one tliu-. during the hearing it looked as if it was about to bs a personal altercation. In deed, had it uot been for the in ter ven lion of Judge Bennett aud Sheriff Lo gan, such Would have been £he case. The judge refused to enjoin’ the prose cution of the claims aud in trials, in which there was no special effort to de feat them, all of the claims were sus tained. At* the time of the killing of Williams the estate of Reese was estimated to be worth between $15,000 and $20,000. Much of it has been dissipated since that time, however; and after the col lection of the judgments just awarded, it is not thought that, there will be very much left for Mrs. Williams.
