j Lindsay Johnson Ones Sono Very Wholesome dvice. THE FOLLY Os GEORGIA FARMERS i •‘Can We Buy Dollar Wheat With S-Cent Cottos!” Georgia Retaed, One-Fifth •f Wheat Oon««i»«d Last Tear. .-«/ e / » h | /A- ® * j Col. J. Lindsay Johnson, ot this city contributes the following able article to the Constitution concerning , this raising of wheat: Editor Constitution-Last spring there met in Augusta many of out leading planters and meet thoughtful, advisers;,and the advice given out as the opinion of this meeting was to in crease our grain and forage .crops and decrease onr cotton crops. This advice, however, was not heeded, and as < result we have 5 cent cotton. Thia state of things may be, and no dodbt.’ is pleasing to the English manufacturer, but to the cotton planter not HQ. This crisis must be met by each in dividual in planning his affairs for the coming year. While each may resolve to pursue a course beneficial to himself, yet how much more may be accomplished by con cert of action. The possibilities of organized effort, where pct in operation by so large and powerful body of pro ducers ae our agricultural people, can hardly be computed. There is no reform they could aot compass. There is no reform they could not accomplish. The great pity, however, is they will not recognize convincing events, though they cast their shadows far in advance. Every thoughtful man knew last aping that with a full acreage in cotton the price was doomed to fall back to 5 cents the pound. That follow ing two full crops this crop, if a full one, would sell at a loss to the farmers. Especially was thi% apparent under a higher tariff, which would, of necessity, check the export demand for cotton, as it checked the importation of foreign goods. Now what is the remedy ? Can we afford to buy dollar wheat with 5-eent eotton ? How long? How much ? When it is a known fact that Geor gia grew last yep? only .2,000.000 bushels of wheat or one-fifth of what she ean consume. Now henp is a home market tor you. bjfeelf df home ground wheat TO feed Georgians. Alas! it is not in the state. It will take $10,000,000 to bny it, all coming from 5-c*nt cotton. \ > How long ean we stand it? We arqjijB J pjrtik>, the- architects of our own misfortune. The voice of wisdom cried out to ce from the convention of cotton planters in Augusta, Ga.. fast March. Yet we heeded not. Ail cotton or bust, seemed the purpose of the mul titude. From the report of sheriff sales all over the state, it would seem folly to pen these lines, but >as a jpejpherof the Georgia State AgrieulttWaT So ciety, I feel it my duty to do so. The field in which I stand at this mo sowing wheat and clover, and be yond where laxnriantly grow the oats and rye already so wn, the.sqnshine in the farrow ail seem to urge me to say, sow thy grain upon the bosom of mother The wealcesl ddfi l jlace ’ n a h° us< ' fort> or a " 5 place of de Br f ense > usually turns out to bi 111 a 1 which VF" was though! stron gest. It is usually the organ in his body that a man thinks strongest, that disease assaults and batters; down. Caution a man about neglecting his health and mention consumption, and Ije will pound his chest and laugh you to scorn. He does pot realize that con sumption beats down this defense imper ceptibly.. jnch by inch. ,The lungs once attacked the only weapon of defense is the right remedy. 98 per cent, of all cases of consumption are cured by Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. Some may cry out financial reform is the only remed '. As much as I desire to see the realization of this reform, yet it is suggested that this is not the panacea for all evil. Let us suppose that this reform had been accomplished, and that according to the wildest theorist, we were now getting 10 cents for our cotton; wheat under the same conditions, would be bringing $2 a bushel, so it would take the same amount of cotton to buy the wheat required. Thus it will be seen that no amount of legislation, however favorable, will relieve us from the effect of such se rious blunders in shaping our plans for the most economical results. Think of it I Ten millions of dollars forbread! Five dollars per capita sent out of the state. Many millions more for meat and other articles of food, all of which should be produced on Georgia farms. ~ We all remember three years ago, when we largely increased our food crops and reduced our cotton crop from near 10,000,000 bales down to about 7,000,- 000. Then we received $50,000,000 more for out 7 000,000-crop than for our 10,000,000 crop, and had fully 20 per cent more food crops in the country. Thia movement placed the southern plan ter in a better condition than he had known in a quarter of a century. Then let us rally once more and resolve to grow enough wheat the coming year to feed all Georgians, and put every good old water mill to work grinding out the old-time sweet creamy flour that is so full of life and health, and so free from adulteration. Let us call to memory the big old»ttme flaky biscuit our mothers used to make; and resolve to live once more for Georgia and in Georgia. J. Lindsay Johnson. Ballinger, persisting in his statement that he had no money, the thieves ap plied fire to the man’s bare feet and awaited the result. Even this method of torture failed to prevail upon the vio. tim to admit that he had any money, and the robbers left, after having bound ami gagged the aged farmer. ' TRAINED GNATSTv- ' i ■ i An Astonishing DemonetraMeu of Intel lectual Capacity, [Special Correspondence.] Venice, Nov. 6.*— The trained lions of the German, Hagenbeck, do many wonderful tricks and attract large crowds of sightseers, bnt they cannot achieve the wonders of that tiniest of animals, the gnat. We were traveling outside the beaten path studying the life of the common people. Recently we found ourselves in the midst of a stream of Italians, who evidently had in view a certain destination. Follow ing the crowd oat of mere curiosity, we entered a commonplace house and ar rived in sight of a platform, on which a strange performance was going. on— two gnats were fighting a duel with metal swords about as long as the hairs of a two weeks’ beard. It was the most astonishing demonstration of intellectu al capacity that we had ever seen. The gnats actually obeyed the orders of the trainer, given with a finger of his hand, and when '& last he commanded them to finish the fight one of the gnats adroitly unhanded his opponent and held him at his mercy. Who would suppose that such tiny creatures had such brain power as that? But this was not all that the trained gnats did at the behest of the proprietor. They brought out little chariots, har nessed one another in and drove around as proudly as any lion king that was ever made to go through a similar per formance. Then all went to school and sat patiently under the instruction of an old grandfather, who was aged enough to be baldheaded. There seemed to be no limit to the number of tricks that these gnats could do in imitation of human beings. For fully half an hour they continued their performance, all the while manifesting as much intelligence as dogs, which are generally accounted the most intelligent of all the animals other than man. The Italian spectators, to many of whom it must have been an old story, were as highly delighted as we were and gave freely of their coin when the collection was taken np. If only some of these Italian gnat trainers would go to the United States and train the Jersey mosquitoes to fight duels to the death, they could claim any reward they chose. Frank Knapp. How's This! Here is a case of inherited blood taint which resulted in what threatened to be a complete wreck of an innocent young life. The most serious feature of being afflicted with a blood disease is the fact that innocent posterity must suffer. The man or woman with the slightest taint in the blood forces the undesirable leg acy of impurity upon their children whose veins flow with the impure inher itance which handicaps them in the race of life. No child who has a trace of bad blood can be healthy or strong, and those pre disposed to Scrofula are liable to a great deal of sickness, because their constitu tions are weak and cannot withstand the many dangers which beset the path of, childhood? Medical statistics show that a majority of lung troubles result directly from Scrofula, so that a child afflicted with this disease is likely to fall a vic tim to dreaded consumption. Mr. W. A. Clayton, of Addie, N. C., believes S.S.S. is the only blood remedy which can have any effect whatever upon obstinate He says : “ My three-year-old boy had the worst case of Scrofula I ever heard of. He MR. W. A. CLAYTON. was given many blood remedies without relief, and treated by the best doctors. He seemed to get worse all the while, however, and the disease finallv resulted in curvature of the spine, making him utterly helpless. •* The bad sores on his neck increased, in size, and were a source of constant pain. He was in this pitiful condition for two years, when some one recom mended S.S.S., stating that it had cured some of the worst cases of blood diseases. As soon as his system was under the ef fect of the medicine, the sores began to get better, and in eight days were com pletely healed. Before long he could walk on crutches, and was Improving every day. In three months he threw aside his crutches, for he had no further use for them ; the dreadful disease had been eliminated entirely from his sys tem, and he was restored to perfect health. The cure was a permanent one. ae no sign of the disease has returned for ten years.” S.S.S. is a real blood remedy, and promptly reaches all deep-seated and obstinate blood diseases. it matters not what other treatment has failed. It is the only remedy which acts on the cor rect principle of forcing the disease from the system and getting rid of it perma nently. S. S.
