For twelve years the attractive little Columbia pad calendar has been gain ing in fame and prestige, yet the thir teenth edition which has just been issued seems to have outdone its twelve predecessors and formed itself by an unequalled combination of good things. The public has become accustomed to the annul advent of the Columbia calen dar and its appearance is always looked forward to and greeted with interest and pleasure. The arrangement of the 1898 calendar is altogether unique, convenient and helpful. Plenty of space is allowed for memoranda which can be used from day to day in the form of a journal and preserved as a record if one desires. The arrangement of dates is such that they can be referred ro in a moment and the moon’s phases are indicated for the benefit of cyclers who wish to keep posted on the best time for night riding. The pages throughout are scattered with bright thoughts, witty and enter taining sbuitys and verses from the pens of Columbia riders who have found inspiration from Columbia rides and sent their thoughts in to brighten the calendar’s pages, also attractive pen and ink sketches everywhere. Conncllmw Denny Starts a Crusade Against Dirty S'rnts. ) „ .-— DELIVERS TALK TO POLICE FORCE i 2 ' ■ He Has Been Given Carte Blanche In His Commendable Efforts For 1 Three Weeks. ‘‘Within the next three weeks we , are going to make Rome the cleanest city in this country,” so spoke Mr R A. Denny, chairman of the polioe committee yesterday. He was dead in earnest, and more 1 means to carry out his most commen dable purpose to the letter. At the [ council meeting Monday evening Mr. , Denny made a stirring talk to the council on this line. He asked that for the next three weeks the matter : be given entirely over to him, and > that with the co operation of Sanitary ■ Inspector Lumpkin and the police, > Rome should be made cleaner than ever before in her history. ( To this .proposition the council , readily agreed, and the following res olution was passed: ’ “That the cleaning of streets and sidewalks and obstructions thereon together with enforcement of ordi ' nances appertaining thereto be refer red to the chairman of police commit ' tee until next meeting of council, the 1 mayor and council individually and i collectively agreeing not to interfere with the matter for said time.” Yesterday at noon Mr. Denny met the entire police force in the mar shal's office, and gave them a straight forward and earnest talk. He told them that he intended to stand by them in enforcing all ordi naces pertaining to keeping the streets and sidewalks clean, and expected their co-operation. * ‘You gentlemen and Mr. Lumpkin will have to do the work and I will get the ‘cnssings’” said Mr. Denny. *‘l can stand my part, if you can yours.” Four city scavenger carts will be put to work this morning. They will work from 6a. m to 12 m and from 1 to 5 p.m. Broad street and in fact all the streets will be swept as clean as a floor and kept that way. Stock of no kind is allowed out in that part of Rome lying between the rivers, but they are permitted to go in the streets in the Fourth and Fifth wards up to 9 o’clock at night. The good people, however, have abused this special privilege in some instances, but all stock found on the streets after 9 o’clock in these wards will be em pounded. Mr. Denny should receive the hear ty commendation of every citizen of Rome in his most praiseworthy un dertaking, and most of them will give him all the assistance possible. 1 He spoke very highly of the police force, and complimented them on their efforts to enforce ordinances.
