’TESTING THE WIND*
PROFESSOR NIFHER’S RIDES ON TOP
OF A FREIGHT CAR.
Measuring tho Air Currents—Method of a
St. Louis Scientist to Procure Informa
tion For the United States Government
About Atmospheric Pressure.
A learned professor rode on top of a
Wabash freight car just like a plain,
ordinary, unlettered brakeman or a hobo
from St. Louis to Montgomery, Mo., the
other day. He returned the same way
the next day. »•
The man of science was Professor F.
E. Nipher of Washington university.
He was not beating his way, but he
adopted that unpleasant and hazardous
method of travel for scientific purposes.
For a long time Professor Nipher has
been experimenting with air disks to
ascertain the exact power of wind pres
sure. To verify these experiments he
wanted a good, strong wind, varying
•from 10 to 40 miles an hour. Professors,
like some other people, cannot always
“raise the wind’’ just when they most
desire to, so Professor Nipher resorted
to a freight train to obtain a supply of
artificial wind instead of waiting for
the real thing.
The start was made on a Saturday
morning from the Wabash yards. The
professor had his apparatus with him,
and it excited the train crew and the
loungers at rural way stations to much
wonderment.
There was “an eager and a nipping
air,” and passengers on street cars turn
ed up their overcoat collars to keep
warm. Out in the open country, with
no closely built houses to obstruct the
wind, and on top of a rapidly moving
car, the temperature was many degrees
colder. There was no resorting to artifi
cial means to keep warm either, not
even to the extent of impounding the
hands in the pockets. The professor had
to watch his apparatus and hang on
tight to keep from being thrown off the
train.
Professor Nipher is the inventor of a
pressure collector consisting of a small
disk made of 'perforated brass gauze.
The air collected is conveyed through a
pipe to a tube partly filled with water.
The rise and fall of the water indicate
the amount of pressure.
“When a strong wind blows directly
‘ against one side of a house, ” said Pro
fessor Nipher, “the pressure is increas
ed on that side, but is diminished on
the other side. Seeking to escape cur
rents of air go around the sides, sweep
ing away the normal air pressure and
diminishing the pressure. This is why
if a window is blown in on the side
where the wind is blowing the windows
and walls of the other sides will fall,
although the walls on the windward
side may stand. There is no air pressure
to support the lee wall. We saw this
in the tornado, but it does not require a
tornado or cyclone to produce this effect.
A strong, straight wind will do the
same thing. •
“I propose to equip some large build
ing with these disks. When a wind is
blowing on one side, the pressnre will
be indicated on that side, and the di
minished pressure will be shown by the
water tubes on the other sides. Then by
a flashlight photograph of all the tubes
taken simultaneously the exact pressure
and exhaust in the several parts of the
Trailding will be ascertained. This is
the information desired by the govern
ment engineers to ascertain the exact
influence of wind pressure. ”
The apparatus taken by Professor Ni
pher on his freight train trip consisted
of a board carried on pivots between
two disks and surmounted by a wind
vane. A needle on the board registered
on the lower disk the angle at which
the board was carried by the wind. The
board’s position was changed from time
to time to test the effect of unequal dis
tribution of the surface of resistance.
The experiments were made merely to
verify tests previously made with the
air disks and were entirely satisfactory.
The trip to Montgomery occupied the

quently this is the case. A woman can
not be a happy, helpful amiable wife who
suffers from weakness and disease at the
very mainsprings of her nature. Pity
may grow up to take its place, but love
itself seldom survives where this is the
case. If a woman will, she may always
hold her place in a man’s mind and
heart. If she will take the right care of
herself in a womanly way she will never
lose her rightful inheritance, a hus
band’s love.
The best of all known medicines for wo
men is Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription.
It acts directly on the important and deli
cate organs that make wifehood and
motherhood possible and makes them
Strong and well. It allays inflammation,
heals ulceration, soothes pain and tones
up and builds up tired nerves. It pre
pares for almost pangless motherhood and
insures healthy children. Thousands of
women who were sickly, nervous, fretful
invalids are now happy, cheerful and
helpful wives as a result of its use. All
good medicine dealers keep it and there
is nothing “just as good.’’ Any dealer

whole day. There were long and tedi
ous waits on switches, but the professor
got just what he wanted. On up grades
the train made from 6 to 10 miles an
hour, on level stretches a 20 mile ve
locity was attained, and double that on
some down grades, so that an opportu
nity was afforded of making the tests in
all kinds of air currents in one day.

COMMON SENSE CURE.
Pramld Pile Cure Cures Piles Permanently
By Curing the Ca
Remarkable Remedy Which is Bringing
Comfort to Thousands of Sufferers.
Probably half the people who see thi
article suffer from piles. It is one of the
commonest diseases and one of the most
obstinate. People have it for years and
just because it is not immediately fatal
they neglect it. Carelessness causes no
end of suffering. Carelessness about so
simple a thing as piles has often caused
death. Hemorrbages occur from no
apparent cause and loss of blood causes
death. Hemorrhages occur during sur
gical treatment, often causing death.
JPiles are simple in the beginning and
easily cured. They can be cured even
in the worst stages, without pain or loss
of blood, quickly, surely and completely.
There is only one remedy that will do it
—Pyramid Pile Cure.
It allays the inflammation immediate
ly, heals the irritated surface and with
continued treatment reduces the swell
ing and puts the membranes into good,
sound healthy condition. The cure is
thorough and permanent.
Here are some voluntary and unsolici
ted testimonials we have lately received;
Mrs. M. C. Hinkly, 601 Mississippi
St., Indianapolis, Ind., says: Have
been a sufferer from the pain and annoy
ance of piles for fifteen years, the Pyra
mid Pile Cure and Pyramid Pills gave
me immediate relief aud in a short time
a complete cure. 2
Mr. M. Griffin, proprietor of the Grif
fin Home, Detroit, Mich., says: I have
been a sufferer from piles until three
years ago I boughtone box of the Pyra
mid Pile Cure since then I have had no
piles, I have recommended them to
many friends and guests at my hotel,
every one of whom has been cured.
The above is true as my experience
has proved it and I hope it may induce
‘other sufferers to try the Pyramid.
A little book on cause and cure of
piles will be mailed free to any address
by writing to Pyramid Drug Co.,

SUBSTITUTE FOR RUBBER.
New Substance Is Called Perchoid—Will
Cost About Five or Six Cents a Pound.
It was recently announced in Denver
that the Right Rev. Dean H Martyn
Hart of St. John’s cathedral in that ■
city had perfected an invention which
is calculated to revolutionize the rubber
trade. Napier Ford discovered a meth
od of oxidising oils, and when he died
in London two years ago he handed hi%
invention to Charles Griest, who made
some improvements in it and then turn
ed*it over to Dean Hart.
The deaq, who is an expert chemist,
worked on it for months and finally
made it valuable commercially. The
business end of the process was turned
over to Dr. John Gower, who went to
London and organized a company for its
manufacture. The new substance is
called perchoid. It will cost only about
5 or 6 cents a pound.

BURGLAR’S DEAD PETS.
Wept For His Trained Rats That Were
Shot In Trenton Prison.
George Pytzel, a burglar serving a 20
year sentence in the New Jersey state
prison, at Trenton, sat in his cell a few
nights ago weeping because his pet rats
were killed by the keepers.
For years Burglar Pytzel and his pet
rats have been an attraction to visitors
to the prison. He found the old cook
house infested with the pests when he
was set to work there, but soon he had
become complete master of them. He
taught them tricks and called them forth
from every crevice and hole by a pe
culiar whistle. They would crawl up
his trousers legs, march in single file
over his outstretched arms and over his
head and return to their hiding places
under the floor at his word.
Recently the old cookhouse was de
molished, and Head Keeper Moore was
convinced that to permit the rats to live
meant that they would infest the new
building, for he knew they would fol
low Pytzel. So he decided thjy should
be shot, and the man who loved them
was commanded to call them forth for
the slaughter. He begged that his es
pecial favorite, whom he had named
Kitty, might be spared.
“She is a great comfort tome, ” he
pleaded, “indeed, sir, as much a pet to
me as is your pet dog. Please do not
kill her, eVen if you have to kill all
the others. ” But Kitty and the others
were shot at sunrise.—New York World.

Plana to Create It Out of the Lower Six

One of the first bills introduced in the
legislature will be cue providing for
the creation of a new state by permit
ting a constitutional amendment to be
passed and approved by the United
States government divorcing 16 coun
ties of New York state aud including
them in what shall be known as the
state of Manhattan.
The plan proposed is for the counties
of New York, Kings, Queens. Rich
mond, Suffolk, Westchester, Orange,
Putnam, Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster,
Greene. Rockland, Albany, Rensselaer
and -part of Schoharie to be formed into
one state, with a population of 3,902,220,
as compared with 2,631,128 for the 44
remaining counties. This would make
the new state of Manhattan the second
largest state in the Union in regard to
population, Pennsylvania alone exceed
ing it.
The remaining counties left to com
prise the state of New York would make
a state the sixth largest in the Union,
exceeded only in population by Pennsyl
vania, Manhattan, Illinois, Ohio and
Missouri. This state would contain a
territory in its 16 counties of 8,960
square miles, as compared with a terri
tory containing 44 counties and 40,493
square miles.—Chicago Times-Herald.
