THE ACTORS’ CHURCH.
Why It Is Called the “Little Church
Around th© Corner.”
The Church of the Transfiguration in
New York is known far and wide, both
in America and abroad, as the “Little
iChurch Around the Corner. ” Years ago
that admirable man and skillful actor,
•George Holland, died in New York. His
friends, arpong them Jefferson,
applied to the minister of a certain
vhurch in Madison avenue for the per
formance of he funeral rite, but they
were repulsed with the chilling state
ment that no actors could be buried
from that church. There was a little
chiarch around the corner, the pastor
said, where they might do such a thing.
From the “Little Church Around
the Corner” George Holland was buried
the next day. The name thus given con
temptuously has clung to the Church of
■the Transfiguration ever since, and the
■“Little Church Around the Corner’ ’ and
its loved rector, the late Dr. G. H.
Houghton, have stood high in the affec
tion? of people and their
friends for many years. The last sad
xftes have been performed by Dr.
Houghton over the bodies of some of
I America’s greatest actors. Lester Wai-
F lack, Dion Boucicault, H. J. Montague
and Edwin Booth went to their graves
from the “Little Church Around the
Corner, ” Mid it was from there that
James Lewis, long known and loved by
New Yorkers, followed them only a lit
tle while ago.—New York Tribune.
Sick-poison is a posion which makes
you sick. It comes from the stomach.
The stomach makes it out of undigdfeted
food.
The blood gets it and taints the whole
body with it. That’s the way of it.
The way to be rid of it is to look after
your digestion.
If your food is all properly digested,
there will be none left in the stomach
to make sick-poison out of.
If your stomach is to too weak to see
to this properly by itself, help it along
with a few doses of Shaker Digestive
Cordial.
That’s the cure of it.
Shaker Digestive Cordial is a deli
cious. healthful tonic cordial, made of
pure medicinal plants, herbs and wine.
It postively cures indigestion and
prevents the formation of sick poison,

AN ODD CONTRACT.
■A. Dying Architect Agreed to Accept a
Coffin For Pay.
, A remarkable arrangement has been
'entered into between Architect Andrew
Smith of Tacoma, Wash., and Conrad
L. Hoska, a prominent undertaker and
• the coroner of Pierce county. In consid
eration of Smith’s preparing plans for
an addition to Hoska’s house in the
fashionable north end, Hoska. on his
part, agrees that this work will be ac
cepted as payment for Mr. Smith’s coffin
and burial expenses.
Smith has a cancer of the stomach
and believes that he can live but a few
months longer. He is gradually grow
ing weaker, as he feels daily the de
pressing effects of the dreadful disease
that is gnawing at his vitals. He has
some money, not a large sum, and this
he desires to leave to his children. Hav
ing this object in view, he made a prop
osition to Undertaker Hoska, which re
sulted in the strange contract. .It hap
pened that Hoska had been contemplat
ing the erection of an addition to his
home and was consequently able to pro
vide Architect Smith the work he so
desired.
. For nine £ears Smith has been one of
the most prominent architects in Ta
coma. He built two or three houses in
the west end for himself, intending to
sell them. Then the depression came
'on, preventing sales, and financial loss
resulted. Smith is about 50 years old
and has a wife and three children.—

Oh, strengthen up your rush line
And get your wedge in trim, *
Your quarter backs and half backs

For football's now beleaguered
By foes on every side,
And it will take a gallant stand
To stem the hostile tidel
< So marshal all your forces,

And get ye ready, one and all,
To fight the buttle through. >

It was in Sumter on Jan. 1, last, that

Williams said he wanted to become a

exempt him from danger of detection.
To further harden himself to be a
butcher of men, the negro says he had
been eating gunpowder.
When Simon Cooper had the county
terrorized the negroes thought he was
invincible because he had been known
to eat gunpowder and swallow shot.
This is the first case recorded here
abouts of a man’s deliberately going
into training to commit murders.
The voodoo doctor, who received pay
from Williams for steadying his nerves,

Tram flungert Through the Station.
The high wind of a recent morning
blew over the frame one story passenger
station of the Wilmington and North

Albert Shock and Gaston Rieverre were

Rieverre was not well and claimed

THE HOME TRIBUNE. BATUHDAY, NOVEMBER 27. 1897.
Sleep
Induced by the use of coca, opiate or nar
cotic compounds is bad, decidedly bad.
They undermine health and shatter
constitution and the patient is steadily
growing into a worse condition often
resulting in the terrible slavery and
misery of the cocaine and opium habit.
Sleep induced by the use of Hood’s Sarsa
parilla does not perhaps come as quickly,
bnt it comes more surely and more per
manently through nature’s great restor
ing and rejuvenating channel—purified,
vitalized and enriched blood. This feeds
the nerves with life-giving energy and
builds up the system and constitution
from the very foundation of all health
and life—the blood—pure, rich, red blood.

TWO BLACKS SHOT DOWN.
Oue Had Assaulted a Young Lady, the
Other Stole a Mute,
Savannah, Nov. 26.—An unknown
negro was killed by lynchers near
Blackshear, his body being literally rid
bled with bullets fired by a band of an
gry citizens, who were pursuing him
with the intention of killing him.
The crime for which he paid the pen
alty at the hands of Judge Lynch was
a horrible one, with Miss Rebie.Davis,
the 17-year-old daughter of Eli Davis, a
farmer, living 7 miles north of Black
■hear, as the victim.
Miss Davis was preparing supper.
There was no oue else in the hou e. A
negro came to the door and asked for a
cup of coffee. The young lady started
to get the coffee and the brute seized
her by the throat and choked her into
unconsciousness. As soou as Miss Da
vis recovered consciousness she found
that the uegro had fled, and she soon
got to her family and told her story. A
crowd of men followed tne negro’s trail
with the result already described.
Jerry Johnson, a uegro, was lynched
by a mob near Screven. He was iu
charge of officers, and was being taken
to jail at Jesup. A crowd of armed
men rode up to the officers aud de
manded the prisoner. The negro was
made the target for a number of rifles,
and his body was literally torn, to pieces
with leadeu balls. According to Mr.
Grey, a merchant of Screven, the ne
gro stole a mule from Mr. Popwell.
J. C. Berry, one of the best known
citizens of Spencer, Mo., testifies that
he cured himself of the worst kind of
piles by using a few buxes of DeWitt’s
Witch Hazel Salve. He had been troubled
with piles for over thirty years and had
used many different kinds of so-called
curss; but DeWitt’s was the one that did
♦he work and he will verify this state
ment if any one wishes to write him. Cur
