MIS STRANGE TOWER. •CHARMER OF REPTILES, OF FISH AND OF WILD BIRDS. ’They Obey the Command of m Indian* Man—Cannes Snake* to Come From Their -Den—Catches Fish While Swimming. Birds Come When He Whistles. One of the strangest characters in Dearborn county, Ind., it -a young man of 28 years, who lives meitr Gnionsville, Ind., and is known by the name of Hun 'Conway, a man of medium build and mediocre intelligence and quiet demean or,- yet possessed of wonderful power over birds, fish and reptiles. At his call the fish will oome to his hands from their retreat in the waters. At his com mand reptiles of every kind rush from their hiding and coil in harmless folds about his person. At the sound of his voice birds will descend on fluttering wing and fall at his feet. Conway can give no explanation of his peculiar power brer the creatures that flee from other people, but are mys teriously attracted to his presence. Many persons have mocked the stories of his potent influence over poisonous serpents and doubted the truth of his ability to charm birds and fish. But recently Hon. H, D. McMullen and the members of the hoard of county commissioners, being called to the neighborhood of Con way’s home on public business, resolved if possible to witness some of the al leged feats of the strange young man and for that purpose called on him. Without any show of vanity at his ability to gratify their desire he invited them to accompany him to the banks of Daughery crsek. At a point where a -smaller creek poured its turbid contents .into the broad bosom of the historical ■old stream the party halted. Conway uttered a peculiar sound, and soon after -there issued from crevice and rock, from -earth and water, a number of shiny skinned serpents, and as the young ma gician continued his crooning sounds •they swiftly crawled to him. As fast as one came within his reach Conway caught it up with his hands and wrap ped it about his neck and arms. The instant the squirming serpents felt th'e touch of his hand they seemed to be hypnotized and relapsed into an appar- > ent stupor, evincing no resentment at his rough and reckless handling. Seven snakes of different species re . sponded to his singular summons and »showed no hostility toward one another >or to their charmer. At the first ap proach of the reptiles the commissioners and attorney retreated to a respectful distance, but after discovering the per fect docility of the snakes and npon the assurance of their tamer that he could control them from doing harm the amazed spectators ventured to approach -a little nearer. Mr. Eb Heaton, president of the board, and Mr. McMullen, the attorney, finally concluded that as the snakes were so strangely still they would touch them to see if life existed. Each one took a snake from the hand of Gonway, but no sooner had their fingers pressed ’the rigid forme of the torpid reptiles than they recovered their former state and, with flashing eyes, open jaws and darting tongues, assumed the most ag gressive manner. Mr. Heaton, with a cry of “Lord help me I” hurled the an gered snake from his grasp and ran for a club. Mr. McMullen, with a pious ejacula tion, tossed the squirming, hissing thing he held toward its master, saying, “Take your blankety blank snake before it bites me.” No sooner did Conway touch the snakes than they again be came perfectly passive. After satisfying Ids spectators of his power over the snakes he released the reptiles, and they fled to their various retreats. Conway then disrobed and, diving be neath the chilly waters-of the swollen creek, brought to the surface a large fish in each hand and, throwing them to the men on the bank, disappeared a second time beneath the water and re turned with like results and continued until he secured enough to present each ■man with a good mess of fish caught in this manner. After donning his clothes he illustrated his power over birds by walking into a thicket near by and by whistling and uttering peculiar sounds attracted a number of birds to him, causing them to alight on his hands, head and shoulders with the familiarity of domesticated pets. Ever since childhood Conway has manifested the peculiar power he pos sesses, and the leisure hours of his life have b§en spent in companionship with these creatures that he fondly terms his friends. Those for which other people show the greatest aversion, such as snakes, he cherishes most fondly and could not be induced to kill one.—Cin cinnati Enquirer.
